Jennifer,
I did some hunting on the Internet, and I did find one report that
said 5% of people have abnormal EEGs, but these people are
called "normal" because they don't have any symptoms. My daughter
does have symptoms.
Our pediatrician just basically saw that the EEG was abnormal and
referred us to a neurologist. The pediatrician said that she was
sure the neurologist would want a scan of some kind. He didn't say
anything about one however. I'm expecting a call from him, as he
was going to go and look at our daughters' EEG himself (he only had
the one page report to look at when we went to see him). I think
I'll tell him that we want a scan.
Our daughter's "epileptiform activity" was not in the temporal lobe;
it was in the parietal lobe. From the reading I have done, that
doesn't seem to be very typical for epilepsy.
Her migraines are only coming once or twice a year, and Excedrin
seems to control them, so we haven't seen a need for prescription
migraine meds. She's actually having more trouble with the aura
than with the actual migraine.
If her problems don't get any worse, I think they'll be very
manageable, but we want to know what's really causing
these "spells". It has caused our daughter to worry about what is
going on. She had been trying to do some running, but after
experiencing a couple of these spells after running, she is now
afraid to run at all. I think if we could get to the bottom of it,
and she knew there was nothing to fear, it would help her to move on
and just deal with these things as they come up.
Thanks for sharing your insights!
