Napoleon's syndrome
Friday October 17 2003
The Guardian

The idea that Napoleon died of poisonous vapours generated from his
wallpaper was one I considered in a Guardian article in April 1995 -
prior, I think, to the work of the Swedish scientist who gave the
theory credence (Napoleonic wars, G2, October 16).

It is certainly not, to coin a phrase, an off-the-wall theory. At the
end of the 19th century, a number of deaths in Britain, especially
infant deaths, were attributed to arsenic poisoning from wallpaper.
It was then called Gosio's disease. In 1904 the royal commission on
arsenical poisoning reported that many deaths probably went
undetected. As late as 1932, the syndrome killed two children in the
Forest of Dean.

I raised the point in an article about cot deaths, arguing that those
too were caused by poisonous vapours - in this case, generated by
fire retardent chemicals in bedding. If this was true, it was the
greatest environmental disaster of our lifetimes, but it was
successfully covered up by the multinationals and the scientific
establishment, which would have suffered enduring obloquy and
astronomical compensation claims had the theory been officially
accepted (see The Cot Death Cover-Up by Jim Sprott). In the years
since, the chemicals concerned have been quietly withdrawn.

Hello everyone. I am a new member in the health care profession.
I've been a PCA (nursing assistant) for one year and I'm in nursing
school now, and I also have a Bachelor degree in Exercise
Physiology. I've got 5 quarters to go! I'm very excited I chose
this profession because I love to help people. However, it's so easy
for me to get burnt out. That's why I started a second job working on
my computer. I love it. I'm now able to pay for my tuition out of
pocket, so I don't have to carry the burden of paying off loans when
I'm finished. Check out http://www.retireforgood.com/?refid=Mw1 to
see what I do.
Anyway, I'm very interested in health and wellness. My goal is to
continue learning about health and related topics. I would love to
continue and get my masters to be a midwife! My friend is one and
she loves it. I'm also taking a pediatric course this quarter. I
love working with children. It's challenging but fun!

Mum slams advice from expert Jul 6 2003

By Sunday Sun

A North mum has revealed how her family was torn apart when her two
kids were taken away following advice by the protege of discredited
expert Professor Roy Meadow.

She has not seen them for three years and her only contact is through
the four letters a year she is allowed to send them.

Her tragic tale began in 1998 when she became concerned about the
treatment of her son - who suffers from cerebral palsy and autism -
by a North hospital.

She was referred to Professor David Southall, a paediatric specialist
in Staffordshire.

Professor Southall studied under Professor Meadow and both were seen
as experts in Munchausen syndrome by proxy, MSBP, a condition where
mothers harm their children to get attention for themselves.

So-called "Meadow's Law" in relation to cot death - one is a tragedy,
two is suspicious and three is murder - has come under fire following
the Trupti Patel and Sally Clark murder cases.

The North mum claimed: "I only met Southall for 15 minutes but I
later discovered he was accusing me of MSBP."

At another assessment she said he became very interested when told
her mum had lost three children to cystic fibrosis 33-years earlier.

Later that year two social workers appeared at the family's home in
Tyne and Wear. Her son was assessed then placed on the At Risk
register and taken into care.

"The day he was taken away was the day I died inside. Being autistic
he couldn't understand what was happening.

"He was constantly crying and asking to come home. It was terrible."

In early 1999, after they were told their daughter had to go before a
Family Proceedings Court, the family went on the run before being
tracked down by police to a house in Scotland.

The girl was taken into care, while her mum and gran were jailed for
nine months for abduction.

The mum claimed: "The final hearing in the Family Proceedings Court
was told that my mum was the major Munchausen person in the family.

"There was talk of the Crown Prosecution Service bringing murder
charges against her."

Genetic tests have revealed the family have a faulty gene associated
with cystic fibrosis.

The distraught mum added: "I haven't seen my children since. All I'm
allowed is four censored letters a year.

"I will never stop fighting until I get my kids back."

A spokesman for Professor Southall said: "The duty of patient
confidentiality prevents any doctor from commenting on the details of
individual cases.

"Decisions in child protection cases aren't taken by any one
individual.

"Cases are dealt with through Area Child Protection Committees who
have representation and opinion from doctors, social workers, the
police and other professionals."

Page 2: Mums treated 'like witches'

Mums treated 'like witches'

North MP and human rights expert Vera Baird has slammed court rulings
that have led to hundreds of children being taken off their parents
as "ducking-stool justice".

Professor Roy Meadow, of North Yorkshire, has often been called on to
back up cases against mums accused of harming their kids by claiming
they were seeking attention for themselves.

Their behaviour has been attributed to the controversial condition
Munchausen's syndrome by proxy, known as MSBP for short.

Ms Baird said: "One of Meadow's criteria for MSBP states if a mother
says she didn't do it then she is in denial. MSBP is ducking-stool
justice.

"Just as a woman accused of witchcraft centuries ago was only
pronounced innocent if she drowned and was guilty if she survived,
those mothers accused of abusing their children are assumed to be
guilty if they deny the charges."

Redcar MP and former lawyer Ms Baird added: "I cross-examined Meadow
as a young barrister and I was extremely worried then by the evidence
that he was giving about MSBP.

"In light of this I have written to the Prime Minister asking for a
judicial inquiry into all MSBP cases so they can be reviewed."

Prosecutors are now contacting all defence teams involved in cases in
which Meadow gave evidence as his testimony is no longer seen as
reliable. We were unable to contact Mr Meadow, now retired, for
comment.

Chance remark cost me my kids Aug 3 2003

By Sunday Sun

A devastated North dad has revealed how a chance remark by a relative
led to his wife being branded a baby killer and the eventual break-up
of his family.

The man, who can't be named for legal reasons, has been inspired to
speak out by the recent Sunday Sun exposé of people who have suffered
because of controversial child abuse expert Professor Roy Meadow and
his followers.

He instigated "Meadow's Law" about cot death which said, "one was a
tragedy, two were suspicious and three is murder".

Two of the North man's first three children died of cot death
syndrome in 1993 and 1997 aged eight months and four weeks
respectively.

No finger of suspicion was pointed at the family until 2000 when
social services in the region were investigating a separate case of
two cot deaths.

When the parents were quizzed about that double tragedy, they told
the authorities how the North man's family - who they were related
to - suffered the same fate.

The father alleged that, at a meeting about the other family,
Professor Meadow suggested the social services look at his family.

And he says that, as a result of this meeting their surviving child -
a daughter - was placed on the Child Protection List.

He also claimed that in 2000, after they had a son, social services
tried to stop them taking their new baby home.

Then when his wife missed a routine anti-natal appointment, they were
ordered back to the hospital and were told their son would be kept in
overnight.

However, the dad alleged: "Social services got an emergency
protection order and they kept him for 70 days at the hospital doing
tests.

"The doctors' report said there was nothing wrong with him. But the
report's final summary said `considering the family's past history
(we are) concerned about his safety'."

His wife's mum, who lived in Birmingham, offered to look after their
children while a Family Proceedings hearing was arranged at the High
Court in Newcastle in December 2000.

"The High Court judge made a finding against my wife stating that
under the laws of probability she had suffocated one of the girls,"
he said.

"Yet there hasn't been a criminal case brought against her."

He claimed: "The police told us there isn't any evidence of foul play.

"My crime in social services' eyes was to stand by my wife, who I
still believe to be innocent to this day."

At a final High Court hearing at Leeds in October 2001, the judge
ordered the children to be sent to live with the wife's mum at her
Midlands home.

Contact was reduced to one visit per child a month. Then in July last
year the couple's marriage broke up.

Because it was his wife who had been accused of murder, the North dad
hoped this opened the way for him to get his children back.

But he was to be bitterly disappointed.

"The only thing I could do, I was told, was take the case to court
myself. I tried to get Legal Aid but I earned too much.

"I was told it would cost me £100,000 to fight the case.

"When I spoke to social services last week they told me I should just
accept life as it is. I will never do that."

We were unable to contact Professor Meadow for a comment.

Hi everyone,

As most of you would know I am from Australia. During this past week
a 27 yo woman was experiencing pain and jumped in the shower to lo
and behold deliver a baby and she didn't know she is pregnant. I
know some people find this hard to believe that she was unaware of
her pregnancy but it certainly happens. This woman actually birthed
her unexpected baby in the shower.

I think that this scenario is a perfect example of how society and
the medical community has instilled the fear of birth and the fact
that it can only be done safely with doctors and interventions etc.
and reinforcing to the pregnant woman that 'maybe I can't give
birth "normally"'

The fact that this woman did not know she was pregnant allowed her to
have no current expectations of labour or fear etc. (How different
would her labour and birth would have been if it was a known
pregnancy).

She was totally able to react inately to what pain she was feeling
because she did not know they were contractions. Her instinct sent
her to a warm shower to reduce the pain. I am sure (although it was
not stated) that she tried to lay down, move as desired to help
reduce the pain she was experiencing.

She didn't describe the 'excruciating pain' until the babe's head was
crowning and the father was able to see that there was a baby
coming........ Only then did it become an 'emergency' with him
dialling 000 to get the ambulance there pronto as my 'wife' is having
a baby right now in the shower. The 000 operator talked him through
the final steps of 2nd stage.

It also shows that our body's ability to birth alone is certainly
there, as this woman's contractions were increasing in strength,
whilst she was able to tell they were getting worse her bodies normal
endorphins were not inhibited by any adrenaline released due to the
fear of the pain of labour and birth and any other fears that she
might have experienced due to an unplanned pregnancy etc.

What a wonderful and beautiful story that so totally reinforces that
our bodies are able to do this without any intervention and so
naturally. To the point that I am 'envious' of this woman who
escaped the telling of horror stories of birth and being told what to
do and not to do.

Mind you I am certainly aware that this could have had a totally
different ending if there were any serious complications, but even
then she and her partner would have known with the increase in pain
etc. and have called 000 more than likely in time to prevent any
serious problems or the extreme the loss of a life.

Anyone else hear feel the same when hearing the news.........

Yours in Childbirth and with the Love of Friendship

MEDIA RELEASE

SPROTT CONGRATULATES SIDS NEW ZEALAND FOR PROMOTING MATTRESS-
WRAPPING TO PARENTS

Dr Jim Sprott is congratulating cot death prevention organisation
SIDS New Zealand for adopting policies which actively promote
mattress-wrapping for cot death prevention.

The first cot death prevention organisation to break away from
promoting solely Ministry of Health advice, SIDS New Zealand is now -
like Dr Sprott - informing parents about mattress-wrapping for cot
death prevention.

Dr Sprott singled out for special praise the bassinet loan scheme
under which SIDS New Zealand provides bassinets and mattresses to
needy parents. Mattresses lent out by SIDS New Zealand are enclosed
in mattress covers which meet Dr Sprott's specifications for cot
death prevention, and in addition parents are provided with Dr
Sprott's full bedding instructions.

Research published by the Scottish Cot Death Trust in the British
Medical Journal in November last year proved that the risk of cot
death rises markedly as mattresses are re-used from one baby to the
next(1) - a situation which frequently occurs in poorer families.

"SIDS New Zealand are to be applauded for their progressive stance in
promoting mattress-wrapping for cot death prevention," said Dr
Sprott. "Bearing in mind that cot death is more prevalent among low
income families (especially Maori families), SIDS New Zealand's
policy of issuing wrapped mattresses to needy families is a great
step forward for cot death prevention in New Zealand.

"Along with the eight-year Cot Life 2000 mattress-wrapping campaign
(2), SIDS New Zealand is now in the forefront of cot death prevention
in this country."

Dr Sprott is encouraging members of the public who wish to make a
financial contribution to cot death prevention to extend their
support to SIDS New Zealand.(3)

Notes:

1. Tappin et al, Used infant mattresses and sudden infant death
syndrome in Scotland: case-control study, British Medical Journal
2002;325:1007.

2. Since late 1994 Dr Sprott has been publicising mattress-wrapping
for cot death prevention nationwide in New Zealand, and during that
time a very large number of babies have slept on wrapped mattresses.
There has been no reported cot death among those babies, and during
that period the New Zealand cot death rate has fallen by 48% and the
Pakeha rate by an estimated 75%.

3. To contact SIDS New Zealand phone 0800-164455. SIDS New Zealand
is independent of the New Zealand Cot Death Association (which ran
the now discontinued Red Nose Day appeal in New Zealand).

MEDIA RELEASE

Scientist warns parents about new research into bedding sheepskins:
Generation of highly toxic gas from sheepskins proved

New Zealand scientist Dr Jim Sprott OBE is warning parents and
babycare advisers in Britain about information contained in new
research which proves the generation of highly toxic gas from bedding
sheepskins.

The research(1) co-authored by Dr Bill Cullen and others at the
Chemistry Department of the University of British Columbia, is
scheduled for publication in a research journal later this year.

Dr Cullen's team has proved indisputably that the highly toxic gas
trimethylarsine
(derived from arsenic) can be generated from sheepskin used as baby
bedding.
However, using data regarding the effects of trimethylarsine when
inhaled by mice,
the researchers have stated that the amount of this gas generated
from sheepskins
would be unlikely to result in the death of babies.

"The researchers' comparison between babies and mice is totally
invalid," said Dr
Sprott. "It is well known that babies can ingest trimethylarsine not
only by
breathing the gas in, but also by absorbing it through their skin.
Gas generated
from a baby's bedding can readily be trapped around the baby's skin
by clothing and
bedding – and a baby's skin is immature and permeable to gases,
including
trimethylarsine. In addition, bedding often contains residues of
laundry
detergents, and traces of these chemicals on a baby's skin greatly
increases the
rate at which gas passes through the skin. So the researchers'
reference to mice is
totally invalid."

Trimethylarsine is a highly toxic "nerve" gas. It is an
anticholinesterase agent,
and a minute dose can result in cessation of heart and lung
functions, thereby
causing death.

"Dr Cullen's proof that bedding sheepskin can generate one of the
most toxic gases
known is crucial information for parents," said Dr Sprott. "It is
very important
for parents to be warned against using sheepskins as infant bedding."

Dr Sprott is issuing parallel media releases to Governments,
researchers, babycare
organisations and the media in the USA, Canada, Britain, Europe,
Australia and New
Zealand.

"I am not prepared to stand by and permit babies – particularly in
the `sheepskin
rich' countries of Britain, Australia and New Zealand – to be put at
risk because a
group of researchers in Canada publish a conclusion about sheepskins
which is based
on an invalid comparison between babies and mice," said Dr Sprott.

Since late 1994 Dr Sprott has publicised a mattress-wrapping protocol
for cot death prevention throughout New Zealand and in other
countries, including Britain. This protocol, which covers both
mattresses and bedding, specifically warns parents against using
sheepskins as baby bedding (based on Dr Sprott's research into
concentrations of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony in sheepskins).

There has been no reported cot death among the very large number of
babies who have slept on mattresses wrapped in accordance with Dr
Sprott's mattress-wrapping protocol. In New Zealand, since the
mattress-wrapping campaign commenced the cot death rate has fallen by
48%(2), and the use of sheepskins as baby bedding has declined
significantly in that country.(3)

Re bedsharing: The likelihood of crib death (cot death) is certainly
not
decreased where babies bedshare in the same bed with their parents.
Research clearly shows that bedsharing between adults and babies is a
serious crib death risk factor. Advice against bedsharing has been
publicised in New Zealand since 1992.

The reason why bedsharing poses a risk of crib death is that adults'
mattresses very frequently contain compounds of phosphorus, arsenic
and/or
antimony, and household fungal growth becomes established in the
mattress
which is capable converting those compounds into certain highly toxic
gases.
For physiological reasons, adults are not put at risk by this gas
generation, but exposure of babies to these gases can quickly result
in cot
death.

The claim that babies are at less risk of crib death in communities
where
babies routinely bedshare with their parents is highly misleading.
Research
carried out in New Zealand across clearly defined ethnic groups (one
of
which groups frequently bedshares and the other usually does not)
shows a
far higher crib death rate among the bedsharing group.

The reason why certain ethnic groups who routinely bedshare may not
have a
high crib death rate is not because of the bedsharing - it is because
of the
chemical composition of the bedding environment.

In those countries where western-style bedding is used, compounds of
phosphorus, arsenic and antimony are very frequently present in
bedding; and
in those countries bedsharing between adults and babies poses a
serious crib
death risk to the baby.

Babies should always sleep in their own separate bassinettes/cribs.

The crib death risk posed by a baby's mattress can be eliminated by
wrapping
the mattress in accordance with a strict protocol and using certain
specified bedding on top of the wrapped mattress.

This protocol has been publicised in New Zealand for eight years
(since late
1994), and during that time an estimated 120,000 New Zealand babies
have
slept on wrapped mattresses. There has been no reported crib death
among
those babies; the New Zealand nationwide crib death rate has fallen
by 48%;
and the European ethnic rate has fallen by around 75%.

Unlike orthodox crib death prevention advice, mattress-wrapping has a
100%
success record in crib death prevention.

Perhaps if baby sleeps in the same bed with Mommy possibility
of "sids" is decreased dramatically? What is all the nonsense, and
lack of common sense that correlates to babies dying in their
cribs/cots? they have absolutely no business sleeping away from
their mothers watchful eyes and hearts. Look at communities where it
is customary for babies to sleep in parents beds and compare rates of
mortality. in Love & Peace and common sense MK

Hi all,

Just had to relay this, I received it on a mailing list I am on:

This information was passed to me today from a an NCT colleague:

"The Telegraph reports today that Claudia Schiffer had a baby boy
yesterday at the Portland by cs . ' She had been hoping for a natural
birth but was advised against it because she had injured her
foot'. "

Got to make you wonder now if podiatrists insurance premiums will
skyrocket.........

                                     MEDIA RELEASE

NEW RESEARCH IN BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL CONFIRMS AGAIN:
                    INFANT MATTRESSES CAUSE COT DEATH

Cot death expert Dr Jim Sprott has welcomed new research which
confirms that
infant mattresses cause cot death. A four-and-a-half year study by
the
Scottish Cot Death Trust(1) published in the British Medical Journal
(2nd
November 2002) has shown that the re-use of infant mattresses TRIPLES
the
risk of cot death.

"This research finding cannot be ignored," said Dr Sprott. "It is
crucial
to cot death prevention."

>From late 1994 Dr Sprott has publicised mattress-wrapping for cot
death
prevention nationwide in New Zealand, and since that time a very large
number of babies have slept on wrapped mattresses. There has been no
reported cot death among those babies; the New Zealand cot death rate
has
fallen by 48%(2), and the European/Pakeha rate by about 75%.

Earlier this year a German doctor published the results of the New
Zealand
mattress-wrapping campaign(3) in an overseas journal, including
statistical
analysis carried out in conjunction with the University of Munich.
The
statistics showed that the proof of the validity of mattress-wrapping
for
cot death prevention was one billion billion times(4) the level of
proof
generally accepted by the medical community as proving a scientific
proposition.

"The 100% success of mattress-wrapping has been proved in New Zealand
over a
period of nearly eight years," said Dr Sprott. "Now Scottish
researchers
have confirmed that mattresses cause cot death, and a German doctor
has
demonstrated that the proof of mattress-wrapping is vastly greater
than the
accepted medical standard of proof."

"The Ministry of Health, Cot Death Association and Plunket have been
dithering around over mattress-wrapping for nearly eight years," said
Dr
Sprott. "During that time around 550 New Zealand babies have died
needlessly of cot death. The Ministry, Cot Death Association and
Plunket
have been informed time and again about the efficacy of mattress-
wrapping in
preventing cot death - yet they have refused to act on this life-
saving
information. I hold them responsible for those 550 deaths."

Hi All,

My name is Rita and reside in rural Victoria in Australia. I have 4
children, the three eldest 13, 11 and 10, and a recent addition of
baby Tyler whom is now 7 months old.

You might say I am a little more than obsessed with pregnancy/child-
birth/breastfeeding/infertility. I have had 6 cycles to donate eggs
to IVF but to no avail.

I am a Registered Nurse, (only did that to get into midwifery - and
now they bring in Direct Entry - ironic, as you will see). I worked
for two years as a Nurse before commencing my Midwifery at Monash
Gippsland on a part-time basis in February 2000.

Disaster struck on June 30, 2000 whilst working a paid shift in an
orthopaedic ward, I suffered a severe back injury. I was receiving
HD's at an average of 95% in my mid subjects, but I am unable to
return to work at all. I am starting some new treatment for my
injuries and hope to get back into mid but need to look at
alternatives in case I am unable to do this. I am currently doing
the ACE Diploma of Childbirth Education that will take me 2 years.
I will be investigating the option of doing the Doula course at Life
Options or anywhere else that includes prenatal, birth and post natal
Doulas. I also hope to sit for the IBLCE.

I would love to be in contact with any other members in Victoria and
especially any practicing Doula's in Victoria.

Anyone else with suggestions as to how I can still remain in the area
of pregnancy/childbirth/breastfeeding/infertility such as courses
etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to reading all messages and hope that this group can
grow and prosper especially to educate the public that Doulas' are
around and available

Yours in Childbirth and with the Love of Friendship
Rita
