Birth Renaissance Press Release
Please join us
in Paris, France - October 18-22, 2001 to launch the
"Birth Renaissance."
The time has come to emancipate
women and babies from injurious birthing practices.
This important Midwifery Today conference will blend
the art and the science of birthing with the wisdom
of midwives and activists from around the
world.
The Renaissance was a time of flourishing art,
cultural rebirth and change, a revival in which the
individual human life became more important. Europe emerged
from its long Dark Ages. This sort of renaissance is
exactly what we need in midwifery, a renewal of interest
in knowing our art but also the science in our
practice. Renaissance, or rebirth, is also exactly what we
need in childbirth, a change to caring for the
individual woman, baby and family.
Our regimented
hospital birth practices do not consider the individual
and her needs. Our birth culture has in fact become
an abomination. Good care is possible in all
settings but it will take planning and understanding. Our
very rich conference program will help you achieve
your goal of helping families have the best pregnancy
and birth possible. The interchange of ideas from
people from around the world will enrich your own
practice.
We have all tried for so long to make birth more
humane and natural and yet it is getting more
technological. Let's reverse this. Let's renew. A long overdue
"Birth Renaissance" needs to be launched. Midwifery
Today has been working on these issues for 15 years. We
have gathered a conference teaching staff of brilliant
thinker-teachers we have met doing our last 30 conferences, to
launch the birth renaissance with you. The key to
launching this renaissance is you, each of you, as you work
in your own communities within your own sphere of
influence backed by information and the spirit of your
like-minded colleagues from all over the world. Besides
gleaning a tremendous amount of knowledge and insight from
our teachers and each other, you will participate in
important summit meetings designed to make plans for
change.
Please join Ina May Gaskin, Jan Tritten,
Marsden Wagner, Michel Odent, Beatrijs Smulders and many
others to launch this great movement in this greatest of
cities. "French and English are the official languages of
the conference with classes in Spanish throughout"
