Hello all~

The New Parents' Group Meeting for tomorrow, Thursday, October 18th
has been CANCELLED. I apologize for the short notice. Please see
the information below about our next meeting, which will take place
at the Pittsburgh Zoo. If you haven't been able to attend for awhile
this would be a great time to reconnect with other Midwife Center
moms and dads. The zoo is very stroller friendly, so it's a nice
trip even for the very little ones (who get in free!:)

The New Parents' Group Meeting on Thursday, November 1st will be at
the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. We will be gathering between
10:00am and 10:30am (This is a time change for this day only!) at the
indoor building at Kids Kingdom and leaving from there at 10:30am to
explore the zoo together.

The costs are as follows, $10 adults, $8 kids 2-13, kids under 2 are
free. Parking is free. For additional information/directions see
http://www.pittsburghzoo.com/
Grace and I will plan to eat lunch at the zoo and head home between
12:30 and 1:00pm for naptime. Please feel free to stay for as long
as you like (or as long as your child lasts!) You can pack a lunch
if you'd like or buy one at the zoo.

If you have any more questions or think that you will be coming and
would like my cell phone# to be able to get in touch with us that day
please feel free to e-mail me. In case of very inclement weather we
will likely head to the Center for Creative Play, so if you'd like to
provide your number as well I could call you that morning if there is
a change in where we will be meeting.

Enjoy this beautiful day!

Annie (&Grace:)

Hey all. I was asked to write something up for the upcoming newsletter
about the post partum breastfeeding support program at the midwife
center. If any of you would like to write a sentence or two about the
program, and if it was helpful for you, that would be great. Send me
an email by the end of the week. Thanks!!

Hello~

This is just a reminder that the New Parents' Group will meet this
Thursday, September 6th from 11:30-12:30 at the Midwife Center.
Unfortunately our speaker Heather had to cancel because she is short-
staffed and therefore busy with clients. We will still have an open
play and discussion time, so please come and visit with other parents
and babes.

We will have a speaker from the Center for Creative Play on Thursday,
September 20th, so please mark your calendars to come and hear about
all of the ways that play can be beneficial for your child and to learn
some new ideas about how to play with babes of different ages.

Enjoy the beautiful day!

I'd rather be a mother
Than anyone on earth
Bringing up a child or two
Of unpretentious birth.
I'd rather nurse a rosy babe
With warm lips on my breast
Than wear a queen's medallion
Above a heart less blest.
I'd rather tuck a little child
All safe and sound in bed-
Than twine a chain of diamonds
About my foolish head.
I'd rather wash a smudgy face
With round, bright baby eyes-
Than paint the pageantry of fame,
Or walk among the wise.

I totally agree with you that it's crazy these laws even have to be put into order in the first place.  In most places in the world, it's a total nonissue.  Leave it to the US to be warped enough to need something like this.

If we have to have it, it's good that we do now, though.

Isn't a "freedom" and a right basically the same thing? And you know
sometimes small victories lead to bigger ones. WE should just
appreciate the fact that it has even been addressed and enjoy one
small victory at a time. That one piece of paper may make even just
one pregnant woman decide to breastfeed when she may not have before
and isn't that worth it! :)

Unfortunately this BILL is far from YAY! breastfeeding should be a
right not a "freedom". This "law" (and it isn't even that really)
isn't worth much more than the paper it's written on, if that. It
does nothing to protect a mom's right to nurse, it doesn't even
mention the word right, that was struck out in favor of "freedom".
It has no penalties in place whatsoever since the amendment was
cut. So while a business owner can't have a mom arrested for NIP
(and noone can ever do that, period, law or not) it doesn't prevent
him from revoking her right to be in the place of business and thus
can render her a trespasser which is an arrestable offense.

Hello all~

Below please find a message from Judy who will be leading our next
meeting:

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to send out a reminder about next weeks New Parent
Support Group Meeting. As Annie mentioned in her e-mail below, the
next meeting will be Wednesday, July 18th. Annie will be out of
town on vacation during that meeting, so I will be playing the dual
role of "substitute host" and "featured guest speaker" - I hope that
you will all be able to make it!

Here is a blurb about what the meeting will cover:

I recently started a new company designed to help mothers be
successful with breastfeeding by giving them access to products and
support. Most of the products that I carry in my store are clothing-
type products. I thought it would be fun to bring a "selection" of
items down and have a "fashion show." I am planning to bring a few
items in a range of sizes so that everyone can try something on.
And at the end of the meeting, we will raffle off one free nursing
top!

So please come prepared to try on clothes and have a great time
browsing the latest in nursing fashions!!

I have over 500 different items in my inventory, so I can't possibly
bring it all, but I will bring a varied selection so that you can
see examples of what is available. If there is anything in
particular that you want to see, please feel free to e-mail me
directly at judy@... and I will be happy to
accommodate your request.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you on July 18th!!

Sincerely,
Judy P. Masucci
President/Owner/Mother
A Mother's Boutique
http://www.mothersboutique.com

ALSO...In August the New Parents' Group will begin meeting on the
first and third THURSDAYS at the same time (11:30am-12:30pm) Please
mark your calendars for August 2nd. Our speaker will be Kim Young,
a certified massage therapist and doula to share with us the
benefits of and some techniques for infant massage.

Enjoy the day!

yeah, ditto to that.  I take both my girls to Bellvue and they are great.  They did put my kids on antibiotics for their ear infections this winter (they each had one), but they were pretty severe infections.

Hi,
My nine month old daughter keeps getting ear infections and her doctor prescribes her high dose antibiotics. As a result she doesnt eat a whole lot and is not gaining weight. She is fussy all the time. Does anyone have any preventive measures for ear infections? Today, she has also been vomitting anything she eats.
I also feel the inclination to change her doctor. Does anyone recommend a good pediatrician/ practice close to Downtown? She currently goes to GIL pediatrics at Magee.
Thanks,
neha.

Hello all ~

We will be meeting this Wednesday at 11:30 am in the basement classroom at the Midwife Center.  We have no speaker this week, so just bring yourselves, your babies and some good conversation.

Also, I will be turning the coordination of the group over to Annie Moon.  It's been wonderful serving you all as your coordinator for the past year (and then some!).  Owen and I will be stopping in from time to time.  We will be there this Wed.
