Take a paper towel off of the roll. Cut it in half. Fold it lengthwise in thirds, so you have a long piece about 11 inches long by a couple inches wide. Drape this over the two jars.  The water will travel up and wet the entire paper. The ions will travel from one to the other.

Raj, I think what they mean is that you insert one end of the paper towel in one jar and the other end in the other jar. The paper towel needs to be wet so...
