sponges are variable in water-retention. you want high water
retention so it will conduct well. plastic sponges are less
retentive than natural or cellulose sponges. The cellulose "o-cello"
type sponge will be very conductive, almost too much so, it really
carries the current right along. You could even use 3 volts with
those and it would work fine.

the use of cloth pads like terry cloth or any other absorbent cloth
is fine, too. it needs to be flexible, thick and hold moisture so
that electricity will spread out through it. almost any absorbent
material will do the job.

O-Cello sponges in the U.S. The ones without the abrasive on one side. If you can't find that brand almost any kind of man made square sponges would work as...
