if you don't want to take in copper ions, the get stainless steel cotter
pins (home depot). or better yet for purists, use pure silver wire like 10
or 12 gauge, and silver plated strand wire to connect with silver solder,
&put heat shrink over the solder joints anyway.
it probably matters on a long term regular use basis, but for
intermittent/occasional use the bare copper wire with cotton wrap should be
fine...copper is a necessary trace nutrient, just don't overdo. the current
is likely to cause some ion migration into the body from whatever you use,
so all silver would be a good thing IMO.
