No, the LM358 is, in no way, the same as the 7555. The LM358 is an
operational amplifier. There is no timer in the alternate schematic.
There are a number of op-amps that can be used to replace the LM358.
If someone that has built one can post some test voltages/currents
then we can make many more alternate schematics. Also, we can verify
that just-built units are functioning properly before use.
I'm new here so if all this has been covered just disregard my
comments.
