Yes, a variable resistor could be used to enable
selecting different frequencies. Your biggest problem
would be in calibrating the settings, which would
require frequency measuring device(s) One thing to
note, however, the oscillator circuits you refer to
are rather crude forms without a high level of
frequency stability, so the feasability would depend
on the accuracy you want. Also, you would probably
have to switch capacitors as well in
order to get a large variation in frequency. To get a
large variation in frequency without changing
capacitors as well as resistance could be very
difficult to set.

This is not a great idea. 5 years of testing finds no real frequency differences in how it kills germs. dc current works as well as pulsating or frequency...
