What I've read certainly supports the idea that a high fever is one of the body's defenses against viruses so I have no argument with this. Nor that aspirin or other methods of reducing fever are usually a bad idea in viral disease. As to the theory that returning G.I.s advocating for aspirin over the 'phone were responsible for the high mortality rate of the 1918 'flu this seems very unlikely. The author offers no evidence that rural communities without 'phones or aspirin enjoyed lower mortality rates than the cities with 'phone lines. Nor can this theory account for the high mortality throughout Asia, Africa, South America which were not subject to returning G.I.s, telephone messages or aspirin.

I published a great article on my web-site about the 1918 flu killer by
Marshall Smith
Editor, BroJon Gazette. He talks about aspirin and the first time it
was used to stop a fever. As most in the natural health communities
know do not put out the fever, it is your friend. Here is the link.

Not that it explains everything, but the article is quite interesting
read.
I'm amazed that nobody seems to have got the idea to keep the patient
cool except for the lungs area, which should be wrapped up to rais the
core temp to inhibit the virus in viral pneumonia!! Why not do that?
If the temp is up at the lung tissue, the virus is stymied, while the
patient can survive better if head, and other areas are at near-normal
temps. Why is this never done?
