Re: [Microcephaly Support Group] Re: New to group

Hi,

I am a mother of an 8 years old with microcephaly. I am in the Philippines
and I really envy you that you have schools that can support your children.
Here in the Philippines, They address other special children with Autism,
Hearing impared, but not like our children. My daughter just turned 8 today and
still in Kinder-Prep. But I was advised that she might be in a pull out program
by next year or if not, we really have to change schools. But the problem is,
where?

Hi,

I am also new to the group but I think I can help you with your
question. My little girl is 11 years old w/microcephaly, cp and
epilepsy. Before she could start pre-k she had to be evaluated to
know where to place her in the school system. I live in the Atlanta,
Geeorgia area and she was in the Babies Can't Wait program (which
helped me more than I can say). Our representative sent us to an
evaluation center to be tested. They checked her hearing, vision, and
they also did an I.Q. test. The I.Q test is what classified her as
severely delayed. It was then decided that she needed more one on one
attention than she could get in a special ed class at our local
school. She was placed in the public school that is only for children
with profound delays. It has been one of the best things. All of the
teachers and staff there are wonderful and it has helped Morgan
tremendously. I don't know where you live, but if your little girl
isn't in a program similar to Babies Can't Wait, I would look into
getting her in it. They can help with so many things and they have so
many resources for both daughter and family. You can check with her
doctor(s) to see if there is some kind of program in your area that
can help you or to see if they can help to find out how delayed she
is. I hope that helps you, she is a lucky little girl to have someone
care so much to learn all they can about her condition.

Good luck,
Mitchaleen
