Hi, Diane. I'm a mother to four children: a five year old, and 16 month old
triplets. One of my triplets was born with microcehaly. Regarding your
question about what to expect from your son's diagnosis, I will tell you this
much: I am still trying to get over the shock and sadness about having a son
that doesn't fall into the "norm" category. I go through bouts where I'm
completely pissed off at the world, but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.
Depending on your son's severity, he will need your patience and love now more
than anything. It's so darn hard, but you will be able to get through it.
Perhaps you're not mourning like I did. I hope not...it was the hardest time of
my life. Either way, he is what he is, and you just have to move forward and do
the best with what you have. These are all things I have to tell myself all the
time. And don't forget to apply for Medicaid. If you do not qualify
financially (make too much money,) you may apply under the deeming
waiver (Katy Beckett act,) which is a waiver for people/families with special
needs children. If you have been appointed a coordinator for therapy services,
perhaps this person can help you. Where I live, there is a state funded
program, and my coordinator helps me with all my paperwork. Best of luck, and
please write if you have questions/concerns, etc.
