From Dawson Church:

The ACEP Research Committee will hold a meeting during this week's
Energy Psychology Conference. On the agenda:
1. RESEARCH FUNDS. ACEP is offering grants of up to $5,000 for Energy
Psychology research. Research letters of intent describing the proposed
projects are due Oct 30, 2007. ACEP Research Director Dawson Church, PhD
will describe the criteria for receiving a grant, and how to structure a
successful proposal.
2. WHY RESEARCH? Millions of people know about EP or have been helped by
EP. Why do we need research? We will discuss the reasons why research is
essential to getting EP into hospitals, clinics and institutions that
are ethically compelled to rely on evidence-based treatment.
3. SIMPLE RESEARCH TOOLS. It is much easier to conduct research than you
might think! ACEP endorses the use of data gathering by practitioners. A
preferred instrument is a psychological profile called the SA-45. Sample
forms and instruction sheets will be distributed, along with a
discussion of the criteria for meaningful research.
4. CURRENT STUDIES. There are over ten studies in Energy Psychology
currently underway. The first grant from the US National Institutes of
Health (NIH) for an EP intervention has just been awarded. Several
studies will be published in peer reviewed scientific journals in the
coming year. These studies will be reviewed. The ACEP Institutional
Review Board, and ClinicatTrials.gov, will be explained.
5. APA RELATIONSHIP. Several initiatives are currently underway to
establish Energy Psychology with the American Psychological Association
(APA). A petition is circulating to establish an interest section within
the APA, and signature forms will be available. Also, the criteria for
doing research that meets APA criteria for an "efficacious intervention"
will be reviewed.
6. CASE HISTORY DATABASE. Practitioners can easily submit cases that
meet NIH criteria for case histories by using the structured report
format at www.CaseHistoryDatabase.org

Building a credible database of formal case histories is a valuable tool
for the credibility of the field. Please log on to the database and
enter your noteworthy cases on a weekly basis!
7. WORKING WITH INSTITUTIONS. Much research beings as masters theses and
doctoral dissertations. It is important to encourage quality work on
relevant topics in Energy Psychology. We will talk about some of the
programs that focus on EP, and how to support graduate work in the field.
8. CATALYZING INDEPENDENT RESEARCH. Once we have done a few pilot
projects, other institutions become interested. Doing quality research
in clinics and private settings will lead to research at major
universities and institutions. Kaiser Permanente, for example, requires
one outside project to consider an inside pilot. If both are successful,
they will consider a major study like the ACE study. If outside research
begins with this end in mind, it is more likely to lead to eventual
research by large and well-funded institutions.
9. VETERANS AND PTSD. One study of Iraq war veterans with PTSD is
currently underway. A plan is in place to offer low cost EP to veterans
with PTSD (www.StressProject.org

This is a particularly newsworthy study target, as well as a social
good. We are seeking to get EP into the Veterans Administration,
National Guard Reserve units, and elsewhere.
10. OTHER FUNDING SOURCES. We are seeking funds to conduct several other
research projects. We need private donations to carry out this vital
work. Please encourage anyone you know who gives to charity to consider
funding EP work.
11. ABOUT ACEP. The work of ACEP and particularly the Research Committee
is outlined. Other ACEP activities such as the Certification process are
described.
The meeting will be held in the Provence Room, from 4:15 pm to 6:30 pm
on Thursday. Please consider attending to find out more about this
exciting aspect of the EP field. The meeting is convened by ACEP
Research Director Dawson Church, and several members of the ACEP board
and research committee will be present to answer questions.
