If a client is unable to connect emotionally with an event that you think
may have been traumatic, I would do the following:
Elicit visual (and possibly also auditory) qualities of the picture
(sub-modalities as in NLP), e.g.:
Is the picture bright or dim? Is it clear or fuzzy? Is it 2D or 3D? Is it
still or moving? Is it life-size, smaller than life, or bigger than life?
Where is it located in space? (pictures of memories that are still traumatic
will TEND to be "in your face" right in front of the individual, often
bigger than life, possibly bright and vivid and fairly clear - though this
is a generalisation) Are you seeing the picture through your own eyes
(associated) or are you seeing yourself in it? (disassociated). Are there
any sounds associated with the picture? What is the volume, tone etc?
Then, tap on the different submodalities of the picture (or the sound, which
may be of more importance to individuals who have an auditory preference),
and check them out again after every round. The qualities should change -
e.g. the picture that was right "in your face" is likely to shift to one
side, possibly become dimmer and smaller, etc.
This should work well even if no emotion is present throughout (though it
may well arise as you go along, and then you just tap on it as normal!..)
Hope this helps
Best wishes
