MEN WITH EATING DISORDERS: 10th September, 2007 Focus Group

A research project that includes a focus group for men with eating
disorders or who have struggled with eating disorders in the past
will be held:

10th September, 2007
5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at
St. Paul's Hospital, downtown Vancouver

This focus group is part of a larger research project of the
University of British Columbia and St. Paul's Hospital. The principal
investigator is Paul Gallant. Two recent focus groups were very
successful in providing a forum for men to share parts of their
struggles and ways of coping in the presence of other men.

I have  just installed PalTalk and as many of you know that I do my

In  1994, I became fully recovered from my e/d so that explains the
year. I know  that people with e/d (all types) and self-injury (SI),
i.e., cutting,  burning, etc., alcohol, drugs, Bipolar disorder, MPD
now known as DID, etc.,  like to isolate themselves and that it not at
all healthy. There are other  members who understand what you are
going through. We like the think of EDSA  as being a family where it's
always safe to talk about whatever. You never  have to share anything
you don't want to, especially in a group chat  session. We believe
that it's past time to get to know about each other,  what type of e/d
you are struggling with, what e/d your children (minor or  adult),
friends, wives, husbands, significant others, life partners, etc.,
are struggling with and how you are doing yourselves. As you know by
now  e/d and other diseases that I have listed above affect entire
families.  Right now, we have a list of SN's (Screen Names) as members
of EDSA, but we  really want to get to know you. You may add any
poems, artwork, songs,  photos, etc., to the EDSA Message Board. EDSA
is for you! Yes, I am the  founder and Lynda is the Cofounder and
Nurse Consultant (RN), but this  Online Support Group is for all.
Hence, the name if this Support Group.
For those of you who happen to live in the S., CA area (Orange Co.,
Los  Angeles, Co., etc.) we want to start e/d meetings where everyone
is welcome.  These meetings could meet once a month or on a weekly
basis and lasting a  one (1) hour. Of course, it will be called EDSA
(Eating Disorders Support  for All), but it will be sponsored by ANAD.
No one will be turned away!  Depending where people live we can decide
together where these meetings  should be held. Please contact us about
these meetings. We know it is scary,  but we have to get over our
fears and we can and will do it together! Don't  keep allowing your
e/d to control your lives! There's nothing we can't do  together and

Please don't be shy or  scared! If you want your parents or legal
guardian, etc., to speak with us  they are more than welcome too. In
fact, we also encourage this. If you are  a minor we require that we
speak with a parent(s) and/or legal guardian  prior to having any
communication with you. We want all involved to  understand.
Especially, in this day and age with so many sick people on the
Internet. This is for your safety and ours. We realize that when it
comes to e/d and other diseases that parents often don't understand,
just want you to "Pick up the fork and eat!" and "Stop acting
selfish!",  etc. If this is the situation, (please remember to always
be honest with us  and we have done and will continue to done the
same, you have to have one  (1) parent, guardian, family member above
the age of 21 and/or even your  therapist to contact us not only in
writing, but also speak with us via  telephone. Just so they know that
you in contact with us. Your privacy will  not be breached. If you
emancipated we will need to see that legal document  in writing.
Again, we want EDSA to be a safe, open, private, and an honest
support group for everyone who is involved.
If you have purged,  restricted, using laxatives, diet pills,
diuretics, etc., we both want you  to feel safe and comfortable enough
to let one if not both of us know. There  are different ways of
purging. I know that many of you drink lots of water  and that's so
you don't feel the hunger. I also know that there's a new Diet  Coke
on the market the alledgely has vitamins. Now, please don't be fooled
by Coke's new song and dance. As a good friend would tell me about
this  if I told her that Diet Coke has vitamins and it's healthy to
drink she  would tell me, "That dog don't hunt!" That means it's
nonsense.
If you  loose your feel for hunger completely then you are at a very
dangerous  place. The same goes for Self-injury (SI), etc.
I personally know and  understand the tricks and methods used as I did
them myself. OK? Honesty is  always the best policy. Those who lie
have to continue to lie and sooner or  later the truth will come out.
It's like a snowball effect. We will never  lie to you so please don't
lie to us. As you should know by now e/d (Eating  disorders -- all
types) is not solely about food. There's always underlying  problem(s)
and you must get to these problems before you can go forth with a
successful healing process. Unfortunately, you cannot prevail over
your  e/d or other disease(s) on an Outpt. therapy setting, i.e.,
Chapter 8 of  "The Eating Disorder Solution" by Barbara Cole, Ph.D.,
MFT.
We are also  here/hear for your parents, guardians, family members,
friends, etc., to  offer them support too as there are struggling too,
but only in a different  way. It is a cycle that you must be broken
just like abuse (any type) or  neglect. Look at your e/d this way, you
would go get the proper treatment if  you broke a bone, had to have an
operation, etc. Correct?
The treatment  centers we are talking about don't lock bathroom doors,
follow you to and  from the bathrooms, have level or phase systems,
punish you for whatever  error they believe you have done, etc. If you
want to be there you are  welcome to stay as they will try to provide
you with the necessary tools to  cope and become free of your e/d
(Eating disorder) and other problems, i.e.,  alcohol, drugs, Self-
injury, etc., If you want to leave you can leave, but  they want you
to stay because they know what it's like because the staff  members
have personally been there themselves.
I have mentioned before  that if you are going to a residential
treatment center in S., CA area  (Orange Co., Los Angeles Co.) and if
you would like us to visit you we would  be more than happy too. Also,
if you happen to live in this area we would  really like to meet you
face-to-face. I/We are also welcome to tour a  residential treatment
center with you. As the saying goes, "Actions speak  louder than words
ever will."
If anyone knows how to design websites we  could use your talents as
we want to make EDSA a website. We want input from  everyone as to how
you would like this website should look like, should have  on it, the

Breaking News on Mental Health Parity:
Senate Agrees to Remove Barriers to Mental Health Coverage

Republican senators this morning removed language from the Senate's
parity bill that would have made it more difficult for people with
eating disorders to get treatment under many health insurance plans.
The senators heard from business leaders and insurance companies, who
last night decided to strike the preemption section of the Mental
Health Parity Act of 2007 (S 558). Mental health advocates believed
that the preemption clause would weaken the parity bill, leaving it
up to state laws to determine whether eating disorders would be
covered.

"This is a huge step forward," said EDC President Kitty Westin. "It
shows that our work is paying off.

"It appears that the Senate will vote on parity this afternoon before
the summer recess begins. If that happens, then mental health parity
will probably be on top of the House agenda in early September, when
Congress returns."

Congressman Patrick Kennedy and his staff were excited by the news
during a meeting this morning with EDC staff and other mental health
advocates. Kennedy and Congressman Jim Ramstad are leading the effort
for parity in the House of Representatives. Today's action brings the
two bills closer to passage.

The EDC has actively supported the House and Senate bills.

WHY PARITY MATTERS
Many insurance companies are reluctant to pay for treatment when the
diagnosis is an eating disorder. State-by-state, people who have
insurance spend endless hours negotiating with company
representatives for treatment that is often limited to 30 days of
care, which may not be enough to treat the underlying causes of the
eating disorder. Also, many insurance policies require that a
separate deductible be paid for mental health treatment.

The goal of state and national parity laws is to create equality
between medical and mental health care and coverage. A strong
national parity law would supercede weaker state laws, creating
a "floor" for coverage. While most Americans support mental health
parity, traditional opponents include business groups such as
retailers, realtors, manufacturers, and some insurance companies.

What happens next?
The Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives
will probably vote in early September on the House parity bill, the
Paul Wellstone Mental Health Equitable Treatment Act of 2007 (HR
1424).

What can you do?
If you are represented by a member who serves on this committee,
call, write, or visit the member in August and explain why you think
mental health parity is needed. Most members are spending much of
August in their home districts, close to where you work or live.

S-CHIP Passes House and Senate, Covers Treatment for Low-income
Families
The State Children's Health Insurance Program passed both the House
and the Senate and will soon be headed for the president's desk. The
program is being reauthorized by Congress and expanded to cover more
low-income families.

Several hundred people with eating disorders qualify for S-CHIP
support each year. They arrive at treatment centers often unaware
that their care is being paid for by this federal assistance program.
In many cases, the treatment providers themselves are unaware that
the patient's policy is being paid for by federal tax dollars since
claims are processed through individual insurance companies such as
Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

President Bush said he would veto the bill because of its expansion
and increased expense. A wide majority of senators and
representatives support the legislation and may override the
president's veto.

from Remuda Ranch about a week ago even those she wasn't medically
stable. Due to her negative experience at this treatment center she
now has no will to live and flight the e/d. She was encouraged to
purge by a staff member. During meal time, the staff member said, "I
know you want to throw up so just do it and get it over with." Her
best friend is also struggling with her own e/d and root cause(s).
She is so worried about her best friend's life. We ask that you
please keep her in your thoughts and prayers and anyone else who is
struggling with their own e/d (all types, both sexes, and all ages)
in your thoughts and prayers too.
