threr was a recent time mag, with in about the past two months, that
focused on anorexia, had the issue as it's cover , and related two or
three stories about young men/boys who have been diagnosed with it.
It was a rather good, comprehensive story.

Hi Michael and everyone,

I CO-own some groups here on Yahoo and as a CO-owner I am also a
moderator the reason why I am telling you this is because that is a
good idea in theory, but sadly in reality many of these people just
ignore the rules. I agree that it is "crapola" when people post
messages about dating. I am certainly not against dating, but I am
just trying to say that there is a place for such information and
personally I don't think this group is that place. Before I became a
member I remember having to tell a little about myself. I wish that
there was a good way that works to block spammers who join just so
they can spread their Spam. If anyone knows of a way I am sure that
we would all appreciate it. I have to say that the groups that I.
CO-own here on Yahoo and the AOL that I don't see that much Spam. I
think the reason why these spanners seem to target this support
group is because the members are men. I don't think that there are
many women who are members, but I could be mistaken. I joined this
support group because of my sincere interest in helping people who
are struggling with eating disorders and that the majority of the
support groups for eating disorders are primarily for females and
not males. I think that is a real shame. Now, my support group at
AOL Groups is for both sexes, people who are struggling with eating
disorders, people who are in recovery or even cured, family members,
friends, medical professionals, etc. If you or others are interested
in my support group, please feel free to let me know. Anyway, I
wish you and everyone well and if you ever need to chat I am here.
I even have a toll free telephone number that members can call if
they are having a bad day/night. The groups that I CO-own and have
founded are for the following: eating disorders, Endometriosis,
Chronic Pain, Travel Nurses/Nuring, Children's Rights, Child
Abuse/Negect, Domestic Abuse (both sexes), Learning Disabilities,
Spinal Conditions, i.e., Syringomyelia with or without Chiari,
etc. I am very proactive and everything I do is on a volunteer
basis. Of course, it would be nice if I could get paid for the work
that I do, but I have found the majority of the people who ask for
my advice, advise, etc., can't afford to pay. I really care about
the people who I have helped and continue to help. There is also a
nurse consultant with all of the groups. Well, I think that I have
said enough about me. I thank you and I wish you and everyone well.
Take care.

Best wishes,

Erika

name of the person who sent me the e-mails and used
"anonymous" instead.
I am asking you/your group to please post the message as I have

at least know that they are NOT alone.
Thank you.

ABC News: American Doctor Helps Treat Anorexic Australian
Twins ...makes me very sad to see this...Anonymous

I called him (Dr. Ira Sacker, M.D.) to see if he could and would
help me when he was helping Melissa DeHart and he wasn't willing to
help me because of the same old sad situation, i.e., I suffer from
chronic pain (cip - chronic intractable pain) from diseases beyond
my control, and have to take narcotics in order to function as best
as I can in life. Now if I can only find a neurosurgeon who's
specializes in the treatment of Syringomyelia with Chiari
Malformation and Spinal Stenosis I can receive the surgical
treatment that is surgically and medically necessary, i.e., spinal
cord decompression being one of the surgical treatments. Without
that I will become either paralyzed or worse die and this comes from
medical documentation from NIH, Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation,
etc The only "true" medical/surgical experts who treat these spinal
diseases/conditions on a daily basisis are all located on the east
coast.
As I have said many times before and will continue to say it until
things start to change, is that it shouldn't matter what disease(s),
and/or which medication(s) one is on in order to receive treatment
for eating disorder(s). I know that you and others have read my
many e-mails/messages in regards to this situation and last but not
least, there is the cost factor of these inpt. eating disorder
treatment centers, etc.
The following are some of our responses/e-mails to each other and
also what I have added to my Eating Disorders for All, as well as
what is happing in the "real world" when it comes to the eating
disorders, i.e., treatment centers, eating disorders community, the
community-at-large, real life, etc. There are all types of people
who suffer with chronic pain due to a medical condition/disease and
less than 1% become addicted to their narcotic pain medication(s).
Yes, they become dependant, but there is a major difference between
tolerance and addiction. Montel Williams, Karen Duffy, Paula Abdul
or just a few famous people who suffer from chronic pain aka: cip
and have to take narcotics to be able to function in their everyday
lives. Sadly, there have been famous and unfamous people who suffer
from cip and out of shear desperation they have taken their own
lives because inadequate or no pain relief this is NOT a War On
Drugs, but a War On Chronic Pain Patients (Pts.).
There is an awesome medical book that explains all about chronic
pain aka: cip, narcotics, non-narcotics, the different types of
pain, medications, the difference between chronic and acute pain,
pain rating scales in over 20 languages and quick guides with
illustrations of selected pain problems, explanation of pain
treatment for all ages, infants, children, teens, adults, and the
elderly, etc. The book is entitled, "PAIN CLINCAL MANUAL" 2nd
Edition written by: Margo McCaffery, RN, MS, FAAN; and Chris Pasero,
RN, MSNc. Both of these women are not only awesome, awe-inspiring,
caring, friendly, outgoing, and, helpful, but most importantly their
are nurse experts in the field of pain management who's book is a
Godsend when it comes to understanding chronic pain, the different
types of pain, . If only doctors and especially pain management
doctors would take the time to read this book there would be no more
suffering. Truth be told that chronic pain pts, seem to know a lot
more than their own doctor(s). How can these eating disorder
treatment centers (30+) tell you that they will not allow you to
come for treatment just because they do not feel comfortable? There
is no choice here and both situations need to be addressed. We also
need to work on getting health insurance to pay for treatment,
scholarships and grants be made available, etc. Even a tax-write-
off for some pts. will certainly not close down these treatment
centers. This is why one of my goal is to design my own treatment
center were everyone is welcome and no one is turned away.
I truly feel that if we work together we can and will make a
positive difference in this life-threatening situation. For the New
Year and years to come let's agree to start saving some lives and
NOT be so reactive, but rather proactive. If you have any
questions, comments, concerns, etc., please feel free to let us know
because that is what we are all here for.
I thank you for your time. I will be looking forward in your
response.
Happy holidays!

Not until they start fighting for people who have chronic pain and
have to take narcotics to be able to be an inpt. treatment program,
i.e., Sierra Tucson, Remuda Ranch, Sante, Montecatini, Renfrew,
Laureate, and Menninger, etc. Also, make sure that people can get
treatment even if they don't have $30,000 and up with no
scholarships and no health insurance. What about males who suffer
from eating disorders? I just received a e-mail from a mother of a
24 yr. old who's scared she's going have to bury her son. NEDA has
always been rude to me and. They start fighting for causes that make
a difference then maybe I'll support them. I can't tell you how many
times I've contacted them and they told me there was nothing they
can do. The spinal conditions are inoperable and I can end up
paralyzed. The reason why the doctors here (SFO Bay area) won't
operate is because there is only a handful of doctors that
specialize in this spinal condition..Syringomyelia aka: syrnix.
There is a 6 yr. old girl who has a syrnix with a Chiari
Malformation and she's having to sell beaded jewelry to get her
treatment. How sad!!! I want help for my ED and I have called over
30 treatment centers and the only 2 that will take me with the
narcotics are:

Monte Nido - costs $60,000 or $90,000 (No scholarships, no health
insurance, limited client to doctor/nurse ratio)

Marisol - cost - $30,000 up (No scholarships, no health insurance.)

With my spinal conditions...spinal stenosis and syrnix I am in pain
24/7/365, basically bedridden or apt. bound. We are looking into
Hospice for me and you don't need to be terminally ill to be a
hospice pt. Due to the severe pain I can't eat so that brings back
the ED, can't sleep, I pass out, etc. I looked into Sierra Tucson
and they checked my health insurance and they accepts it, but they
still want $64,000 out-of-pocket before I can attend their ED
program. I've been told that ED programs or much more expensive vs,
drug and alcohol detox, rehab, and treatment, and other programs. I
can't go to an outpt. program because of my spinal conditions and my
Mom has to work, we only have one car. I need to get to the root
problem of my ED not just be refed because that's not the answer for
anyone.

Hi there,

I am SAM, an Iraqi refugee living in Lebanon at the moment; I have spent the
last 10 years of my life as a refugee registered with the UNHCR in Beirut. The
last 4 years, I have spent as an activist for peace and human rights (especially
refugees and asylum seekers) on the Internet; I'm also books author and ebooks
publisher. I have launched many campaigns to improve our situation as refugees
in Lebanon and hopefully bring more understanding to our problems worldwide. I
helped make many changes and improvements at the UNHCR office in Beirut; I used
the Internet as the field for my activities (you can read more about that in my
free ebook 'MY CAMPAIGNS'). All my ebooks are free and could be download from my
sites.

This is my newest campaign, it's about the illegal and humiliating actions of
the UNHCR, who using photos of refugees as banners and human-buttons to collect
money. This is an abuse of the dignity and humanity of the refugees and must
stop immediately and a clear public apology present by The United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees. My friends, I am talking about the pictures you can
see here:
http://un77.sphosting.com

Where you can read the rest of this message as web page.

For more info about UNHCR and life of refugees you can read my free ebooks. I
invite you as fellow humans and members of the world community to support my
campaign by reading my article on my site and see the human-buttons. The
campaign is to support and improve the UNHCR http://www.unhcr.ch especially
after the last scandals in the UN and UNHCR, just for example:

The refugees allege that UNHCR staff is selling most of the food items they are
supposed to be supplied.
"They aren't supplying sufficient food to us because they sell most of the food
items," they allege: http://allafrica.com/stories/200503140214.html

My Friends, Max, and Max's Mother, Sara,

I am responding to a private e-mail message that I received on my
private e-mail address about the 2 pictures of the 2 different women
who are severely underweight, malnourished, and look to be on their
death bed due to eating disorders...anorexia nervosa. These 2
pictures were not meant to "trigger" anyone. If it has then I feel
that we need to come together and have monthly chats as I have
suggested and also if you or someone has been "triggered" by these 2
pictures then you need to consult with a therapist. Above all, this
is NOT a Pro eating disorders site! These 2 pictures are to show
this world what is really going on with people who are struggling
with eating disorders. When you mention the words "eating disorders"
to the public-at-large and some in the medical community there are
many people who still believe that if you just feed them, i.e.,
force-feeding, then it will go away. This is not the case at all.
As I have said many times before, eating disorders are NOT solely
about food. There is always a reason why someone has an eating
disorder(s) and some of the cause(s) can be due to abuse, rape,
school, career, live in general, etc. Eating disorders is a sign of
lack of control in someone's life so the only thing that they
believe they can do to try and regain control of their life is to
control their eating, i.e., to eat, not to eat, binge-purge, binge,
etc. However, this is not an answer and nor does it work. If
anything it compounds the situation. People with eating disorders
are doing and have done damage to their bodies, i.e., teeth, hair,
skin, nails, heart, esophagus, etc. Many times the damage is
irreversible.
There are different types of eating disorders not just anorexia and
bulimia. I am not saying that in every case there was or is abuse
involved. Nor am I blaming anyone because no one is to blame unless
there was or is abuse involved. To call these 2 women in those
pictures "tiny ladies" is "sugar coating" the seriousness of this
disease.
Ladies and Gentlemen, these 2 pictures are reality, plain and
simple. Too many people (females, males, and at all ages) are dying
even as I am typing this response because the public-at-large and
some in medical community do not really understand that struggling
with eating disorders is a death sentence without proper treatment.
These 2 pictures are a wake-up call the world and show to truth as
to what is really happening. As the saying goes, "The truth will set
you free." We have a huge problem when it comes to eating disorders
at the community-at-large and that problem is that "people still do
not get it" and that is sad. They simply want to sweep it underneath
the carpet and in their minds it will make it disappear. In reality,
all that will happen is that all these people will die and thus
disappear. This is why I started this support group, what I am
trying to prevent with your help and the hopefully the help of
others. The shear mention of the words eating disorder(s) makes
people silent, so silent in fact, that you can hear a pin drop. They
cringe at these words. This disease makes people feel very
uncomfortable. Death makes me feel very uncomfortable. No, there is
no quick fix for people struggling with eating disorders. So if I
have to add pictures of 2 women who are about to die from their
eating disorder(s) to let people know what is really going on then
that is what needs to be done.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have not even touched the surface of males
who are struggling with eating disorders. This support group was and
is designed to help everyone understand the seriousness of eating
disorders. Hence the name of the group, "Eating Disorders for All."
This support group is for mother's, father's, guardians, family
members, friends, lovers, husbands, wives, and for people who are
struggling and who have struggled with eating disorders. Eating
disorders is not a pretty picture nor should it be. Those 2 pictures
were to shock and enrage you. I want people to become enraged and
start acting and not reacting. Be proactive and ban together with
this support group and make a difference and start saving people's
lives. To your question, "Should we be broadcasting them?" My answer
is, "Yes, and more if need be to make the world really understand
what it like to have an eating disorder. Doing this and other acts
until people "get it and start taking this disease seriously."
Sadly, people are going to die and are dying if they do not receive
proper treatment. Treatment is NOT wildly available to all as it is
advertised. It is a major misconception and I for one am tired of
it. Aren't you? If you have read my messages about the costs of
treatment, accepting no health insurance or providing no
scholarships, discriminating against people who have
diseases/medical conditions, who have to take narcotic pain
medication(s) to be able to function, etc. You would be just as
tired of the major misconceptions of how easy it is to obtain
treatment as I and others alike myself are.
Removing these 2 pictures would be living in denial. I refuse to
remove the 2 pictures because they depict the brutal honestly of
what it is like to be at the edge of death due to eating disorders.
Let us start working together as a group and make a difference if
not for our own lives, but for the lives of others who are
struggling with eating disorders.
I am serious about monthly chats online, I would like to see people
add pictures of themselves (beauty comes from within and this is a
safe place), add artwork, poetry, music, anything that describes who
you are and I mean everyone, i.e., those who are struggling with
eating disorders and those who have to watch their loved one's
suffer. Keeping things all bottled up inside is not good for
yourself or anyone. This support group is a "safe place" for
everyone to share your thoughts, views, ideas, etc. No one is going
to be judged. I hope that I have answered your concerns about those
2 pictures and anything else.
If you have any more questions, concerns, thoughts, ideas, etc.,
please feel free to contact me. I am also available via telephone (I
have a toll free number). If you would like this toll free telephone
number, please feel free to contact me. I would like to get a
support telephone tree going. I do not want anyone to feel alone and
I want to help those who feel like they need to not eat, binge and
purge, overeat, etc., to have people whom they can turn to and
trust. I really do know and understand what it is like to live with
eating disorders. I struggle with anorexia and bulimia (I am more
anorexic than bulimic). I began at age 6 years old. Yes, you read
correctly 6 years old. I was a victim of childhood abuse (all types)
and now I consider myself a survivor.
I would like to see membership of this support group grow, so I am
asking for your help.
We are in this plight together.
Happy holidays to all.

Best wishes,

Erika, Founder, Eating Disorders for All

Mary, How is this suppose to help men (people) who are struggling with eating
disorders? I've looked it over and I don't see how it can help. Treatment
centers for eating disorders costs $30,000 and up. The treatment centers don't
offer scholarships or accept health insurance. All they care about is that you
gain weight that is the goal to becoming discharged. They concentrate more on
food vs. the reason behind someone is struggling with eating disorders. There
are only a couple of treatment centers that do not do it like this, but they
only allow women (females). If you have medical problem(s) which comes along
with having eating disorders and let's say that you have to take narcotics for
chronic pain or you are a diabetic they will not accept you. I am tired of the
lies in the Gurze Catalog, TV, etc., that say that if you have an eating
disorder that all you have to do is pick up the telephone call the treatment
center of your choice and you will be admitted and get well.
Lies! People are dying because these treatment centers only care about is
money. I called a treatment center (name I will leave out that treats both
sexes, isn't like a prison) and the Intake Coordinator told me that it would be
$64,000 out-of-pocket and that's after checking with my health insurance
company. I am one of the lucky ones' that I have an excellent health insurance
company. After the Intake Coordinator told me this shocking cost of treatment
or as I like to put it...cost of your life, I asked her how many people have
this much money, they offer no scholarships, and I even asked her if she herself
could afford the program and her response was , "No." This treatment center is
a pretty large, private, beautiful, famous/well-known treatment center for
eating disorders, sexual abuse recovery, gambling treatment, drug and alcohol
detox and treatment, etc., and there have been many famous people who have gone
there for treatment. I just can't believe that they don't
offer scholarships. This is a subject that really makes me mad. I told the
Intake Coordinator at this treatment center that it would be a lot cheaper to
pay for a funeral vs. treatment/help. Needless to say, she didn't like my
comparison, but I'm only speaking the truth. There are not many treatment
centers for men which I find sad. I have founded a support group on AOL titled,
Eating Disorders for All. The titled is just what it means. I live in the San
Francisco Bay area and I want to get a in person support group going for people
who are struggling with eating disorders, their families, friends, love ones,
etc. These meetings would be held on a monthly basis and they are free and open
to the public. I am here is anyone wants or needs to chat with someone about
what it's like. I know that the holiday times are worse. To those who have
written/e-mailed me I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I haven't
forgot about any of you. I believe in the Montreux
Treatment Centre method by Peggy Claude Pierre, she wrote the book titled, "The
Secrete Languages of Eating Disorders" and that book is a Godsend for both males
and females. I really want to make a difference and help everyone who has
eating disorders, chronic pain, etc. I know of a 6 yr old who thinks she's
"fat." I'm here/hear for anyone who want/needs support and who wants to see the
system change. I want to thank you for listening. If anyone of you is in the
media or knows someone who is in the media, i.e., journalist -- newspaper,
magazine, and/or TV, I would very much like to speak with him/her about this
very serious and deadly issue. If you are interested in joining Eating Disorder
Support for All and/or if you live or know of someone who lives in the San
Francisco Bay area and needs and a wants a support and advocacy group, please
feel free to contact me. As I have mentioned I do a lot of advocacy work in the
community.
   Take care.

   Erika

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so please check your breasts,
i.e., breast self exam (this should be done on a monthly basis). If you
do not know how ask your PCP or your OB/GYN doctor to show you how.
Remember, men can also get breast cancer. Thank you and take care.

Hello Friends!
I wanted to let you know that I have just started my own Eating
Disorders Support Group on AOL called, Eating Disorders Support For
All. The title pretty much describes it. This group offers a nurse
consultant for any medical questions you or your loved ones might
have. I do not believe in passing judgments. I also do not believe
in "forcing" someone into treatment or force feeding, i.e., NG Tub,
etc. You will know when you are ready to seek help. If/when that
time comes I can and will assist you in finding the best place for
you. However, this is a support group and a place where I hope that
you will feel safe to share yourselves. The only way that a person
is going to get better from any type of eating disorder is for you to
admit that you have a problem and that you want and need help. If
you read the decription and the welcome message to this support group
you will find that I am here to try and help you. If anything at all
support you. If you are interested or know of anyone who would be
please feel free to join and let others know it is around. The only
way that this group will grow and become a huge success is by word-of
mouth. I know that the eating disorder community focuses primarily
on females with eating disorders and I would like to bridge that
gap. Someday, my ultimate goal is to have my own treatment center
that accepts everyone. I am also a chronic pain patient so I have
discovered that there are only two eating disorder treatment centers
here in the US that will accept people who have chronic pain and have
to take narcotics. People who are suffer with chronic pain, i.e.,
cip = chronic intractable pain syndrome, and have to take narcotics
are not drug addicts. In fact, nothing could be further from the
truth. Again, these two treatment centers are only for females.
Eating disorders causes many health problems. The other huge problem
that the eating disorders community likes to ignore is the fact that
these treatment centers costs too damn much money and they do not
accept heath insurance. The costs can start from $30,000 and up.
Who has this type of money? How can you put a price of a person's
life? Believe it or not, they can and they do. Here is the
hyperlink to this group: http://groups.aol.com/etspprt I hope that
this support group will help you. I hope that everyone is doing
well. I just wanted to share this information with this group. If
you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free
to contact me. I can also be reached via telephone at a toll free
number which I have setup. I know you are all too aware that eating
disorders is no joke and that you can die. I am sure that you all
also know that food is not the real issue. Please remember, you are
NOT alone in your struggles!
Thank you and take care of yourselves.

Eating Out? Eat Right!

No matter what type of restaurant you choose, you can
find healthy choices that you'll enjoy eating.

Here's how:

Go fish. As long as it isn't fried or soaked in
butter, fish is often the healthiest option on the
menu. Ask for yours grilled, baked, broiled, steamed,
or blackened. Poultry can be another good choice, if
you stick to the breast meat and remove the skin.

Double your veggies. Replace potatoes, white rice, or
pasta with a second helping of vegetables. Make sure
they're steamed or lightly sautéed in olive oil. Ask
for beans (black, red, kidney, or pinto), which are
high in fiber and disease-fighting antioxidants.
Another option: If you're on Phase 2 or 3, ask for
brown rice, couscous, or whole-wheat pasta, or request
a small helping of semolina pasta on the side.

Opt for olive oil. Request your food be cooked with
the "right" fats — olive oil or canola oil — instead
of butter or other saturated fats.

When in doubt, say salad. If nothing on the menu suits
your lifestyle, have a salad. Just remember to ask for
oil and vinegar instead of a pre-made dressing.

Thankyou for replying! This group has been very in active lately.

Well my story. hmmm where do i start?
Im 16, in grade 11. Im discusted with the way i look. I want to loose weight
more than anything in the world. its the only goal i have in life pretty much. I
hate the fact that when i look at other guys my age they are all skinner. Ive
had these feelings since i was 14. Ive tried for years to loose weight but
nothing works. I dont eat all day. Jus dinner cuz my mom forces it down my
throat. I excersie sometimes for abit. Hmm wut else. I take cold showers. Drink
about 3L of water a day cuz i think it might burn calories. I lost 5lbs over the
summer and i was really happy. But it was clearly water weight because now im
back at 120! i hate that number. Ive been 120lbs since about grade 8 at least.
If i gained a pound i dont know wut i would do. Id probably start purging. I
think about that alot. I really want to but something holds me back from doing
it. Have u ever?

My goal weight is 70lbs. Anything under 100 would make me very happy! Do u know
anyways to loose weight? I need some tips lol. Well if i think of anything else
i will email you again.

Take care and thanks for taking an interest in my story. Now whats yours?
Dane.
