ABC News: American Doctor Helps Treat Anorexic Australian
Twins ...makes me very sad to see this...Anonymous

I called him (Dr. Ira Sacker, M.D.) to see if he could and would
help me when he was helping Melissa DeHart and he wasn't willing to
help me because of the same old sad situation, i.e., I suffer from
chronic pain (cip - chronic intractable pain) from diseases beyond
my control, and have to take narcotics in order to function as best
as I can in life. Now if I can only find a neurosurgeon who's
specializes in the treatment of Syringomyelia with Chiari
Malformation and Spinal Stenosis I can receive the surgical
treatment that is surgically and medically necessary, i.e., spinal
cord decompression being one of the surgical treatments. Without
that I will become either paralyzed or worse die and this comes from
medical documentation from NIH, Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation,
etc The only "true" medical/surgical experts who treat these spinal
diseases/conditions on a daily basisis are all located on the east
coast.
As I have said many times before and will continue to say it until
things start to change, is that it shouldn't matter what disease(s),
and/or which medication(s) one is on in order to receive treatment
for eating disorder(s). I know that you and others have read my
many e-mails/messages in regards to this situation and last but not
least, there is the cost factor of these inpt. eating disorder
treatment centers, etc.
The following are some of our responses/e-mails to each other and
also what I have added to my Eating Disorders for All, as well as
what is happing in the "real world" when it comes to the eating
disorders, i.e., treatment centers, eating disorders community, the
community-at-large, real life, etc. There are all types of people
who suffer with chronic pain due to a medical condition/disease and
less than 1% become addicted to their narcotic pain medication(s).
Yes, they become dependant, but there is a major difference between
tolerance and addiction. Montel Williams, Karen Duffy, Paula Abdul
or just a few famous people who suffer from chronic pain aka: cip
and have to take narcotics to be able to function in their everyday
lives. Sadly, there have been famous and unfamous people who suffer
from cip and out of shear desperation they have taken their own
lives because inadequate or no pain relief this is NOT a War On
Drugs, but a War On Chronic Pain Patients (Pts.).
There is an awesome medical book that explains all about chronic
pain aka: cip, narcotics, non-narcotics, the different types of
pain, medications, the difference between chronic and acute pain,
pain rating scales in over 20 languages and quick guides with
illustrations of selected pain problems, explanation of pain
treatment for all ages, infants, children, teens, adults, and the
elderly, etc. The book is entitled, "PAIN CLINCAL MANUAL" 2nd
Edition written by: Margo McCaffery, RN, MS, FAAN; and Chris Pasero,
RN, MSNc. Both of these women are not only awesome, awe-inspiring,
caring, friendly, outgoing, and, helpful, but most importantly their
are nurse experts in the field of pain management who's book is a
Godsend when it comes to understanding chronic pain, the different
types of pain, . If only doctors and especially pain management
doctors would take the time to read this book there would be no more
suffering. Truth be told that chronic pain pts, seem to know a lot
more than their own doctor(s). How can these eating disorder
treatment centers (30+) tell you that they will not allow you to
come for treatment just because they do not feel comfortable? There
is no choice here and both situations need to be addressed. We also
need to work on getting health insurance to pay for treatment,
scholarships and grants be made available, etc. Even a tax-write-
off for some pts. will certainly not close down these treatment
centers. This is why one of my goal is to design my own treatment
center were everyone is welcome and no one is turned away.
I truly feel that if we work together we can and will make a
positive difference in this life-threatening situation. For the New
Year and years to come let's agree to start saving some lives and
NOT be so reactive, but rather proactive. If you have any
questions, comments, concerns, etc., please feel free to let us know
because that is what we are all here for.
I thank you for your time. I will be looking forward in your
response.
Happy holidays!

Not until they start fighting for people who have chronic pain and
have to take narcotics to be able to be an inpt. treatment program,
i.e., Sierra Tucson, Remuda Ranch, Sante, Montecatini, Renfrew,
Laureate, and Menninger, etc. Also, make sure that people can get
treatment even if they don't have $30,000 and up with no
scholarships and no health insurance. What about males who suffer
from eating disorders? I just received a e-mail from a mother of a
24 yr. old who's scared she's going have to bury her son. NEDA has
always been rude to me and. They start fighting for causes that make
a difference then maybe I'll support them. I can't tell you how many
times I've contacted them and they told me there was nothing they
can do. The spinal conditions are inoperable and I can end up
paralyzed. The reason why the doctors here (SFO Bay area) won't
operate is because there is only a handful of doctors that
specialize in this spinal condition..Syringomyelia aka: syrnix.
There is a 6 yr. old girl who has a syrnix with a Chiari
Malformation and she's having to sell beaded jewelry to get her
treatment. How sad!!! I want help for my ED and I have called over
30 treatment centers and the only 2 that will take me with the
narcotics are:

Monte Nido - costs $60,000 or $90,000 (No scholarships, no health
insurance, limited client to doctor/nurse ratio)

Marisol - cost - $30,000 up (No scholarships, no health insurance.)

With my spinal conditions...spinal stenosis and syrnix I am in pain
24/7/365, basically bedridden or apt. bound. We are looking into
Hospice for me and you don't need to be terminally ill to be a
hospice pt. Due to the severe pain I can't eat so that brings back
the ED, can't sleep, I pass out, etc. I looked into Sierra Tucson
and they checked my health insurance and they accepts it, but they
still want $64,000 out-of-pocket before I can attend their ED
program. I've been told that ED programs or much more expensive vs,
drug and alcohol detox, rehab, and treatment, and other programs. I
can't go to an outpt. program because of my spinal conditions and my
Mom has to work, we only have one car. I need to get to the root
problem of my ED not just be refed because that's not the answer for
anyone.
