Our country is acting like we have SS Storm Troopers running the
Government. The Patriot Act has something called, "Sneak & Peak" which means
our
homes can be searched at any time, for any reason "they" feel" they have a
reason
to be doing that. People who have chronic pain have one of the highest
suicide rates and this arresting and imprisoning pain doctors is not helping
that
statistic decrease. Doctors are afraid to give patients the medicines and the
dosages they need to control pain and chronic pain patients take higher
doses due to many reasons which are physiological. This "War On Drugs" needs
to
end. Correction, it is not a "War On Drugs." It is a "War On Chronic Pain
Patients and people who stand up, speak their minds, etc.!" The USA has
become just like what the book titled, "1984" (Big Brother is Watching You) by
George Orwell had written.
I am writing this together with my daughter who is a chronic pain patient
who cannot get the medicine she needs nor the dosage she needs due to this
atmosphere in our country. I am a registered nurse and am appalled at what is
happening. I see patients left in pain in the hospital because the doctors say
"they couldn't be in that much pain." I will leave it at that due to patient
confidentiality but I am here to say even though pain is considered the fifth
vital sign by JACHO who accredits or takes away accreditation from
hospitals, this is not being followed. Doctors are scared and patients are
suffering
in and out of the hospital. My own daughter is left to lie in horrific pain
because the pain doctor does not feel "comfortable" giving her what she needs.
Any patient who has chronic pain is all too familiar with that phrase.
Her own PCP will not call me back for the simplest of things, like the
bladder infection she has. She has a history of those turning into kidney
infections and she cannot get help. His secretary runs the show; she does not
think
it is urgent even though my daughter was hospitalized in June 2005 because
it had gone on since March 2005. She unwittingly got between two doctors one
year ago who are having a political battle. Her pain doctor did have the
intestinal fortitude to tell us that. Consequently, she did not receive the
surgery she desperately needs. Her PCP says he "does not want to get into the
middle of this." I am sick of doctors having no courage. If they did stand up
for
their patients, their patients would stand behind them, but, as I have
already stated, they do not feel "comfortable" or they are afraid of the DEA
and/or FBI. These agencies are supposed to protect us as American citizens and
they are not. California has a pain law, but it does not help the chronic pain
patients because the architect of this pain law does not abide to it so why
should the rest of these pain doctors? There are no consequences for these
doctors not abiding to the CA Pain Law so there is nothing that pain patients
in Ca can do.
My daughter is not the only one going through this, i.e., medical records
having lies in them, verbal and written blackballing so that she cannot get any
medical or surgical care because of these lies. Even if she was what they
say and she is not, she deserves medical care and the surgery she needs.
Prisoners are getting better care than free Americans. Case in point, a prisoner
in
California, about two or three years ago, got an organ transplant while a
free father of three children back east was left dying needing a transplant. I
personally have witnessed a person who needed a kidney transplant who was in
this country one day who was getting the transplant he needed before any
American citizens already on the list. I am not saying prisoners and
foreigners
should not get medical care; of course they should, but not at the expense of
law abiding American citizens.
One other thing that is happening to chronic pain patients is that if they
have an eating disorder, they cannot get help. None of the care facilities
for them will take them except two in this country and they are only for
females, Monte Nido in Malibu, CA and Marisol in Arizona. Most facilities, but
not
the two before mentioned, say they cannot keep narcotics on the units. Why
not? Do they not lock up all medications? Of course they do; they just will
not accept anyone who has a chronic pain or any other medical condition for the
most part. The chronic pain triggers the eating disorder so that is why I am
including this in this message to all. It becomes a vicious cycle of pain
and not being able to eat. The pain causes nausea many times and this is one of
the triggering factors also. If a patient can find the help and acceptance
of them as a patient in one of the two places in this country that will accept
chronic pain patients, then they will not accept insurance. We have parody
in this state, but there are many other states who do not. Parody is when an
eating disorder is accepted as a medical condition instead of a psychological
condition so the insurance will cover it. Even though we have it here in
California, some of these institutions will not fight the insurance companies
for
it. Can most people pay $30,000 a month and up? I know I cannot do that and
do not think most people can do it. According to ANAD, these centers can cure
eating disorders because they get at the root of the problem which is
usually molestation as a child. The rest say they cannot cure eating disorders;
then they would not get return trips from patients and they would loose money.
The rest also lock them up like animals in a zoo and force feed them with a
feeding tube, and take away privileges. Please read Peggy Claude Pierre' s
book, "Secret Language of Eating Disorders."
As an RN, I have even seen a patient who had an eating disorder and was
molested as a child, which over 90% of people with eating disorders have been,
be
four pointed in leather restraints. All I could think is that she must think
she is being raped all over again and I am sure it caused flashbacks for her.
My heart went out to her.
Last but certainly not least, that new TV Show titled, "STARVED" on FX is
a sick show about eating disorders. Correction, it is really a comedy about
eating disorders. Let me quote the show, "A mockumentary about four
30-something friends with eating disorders." How can people joke and laugh
about
such a serious medical and psychological condition? Eating disorders are
fatal!
Here is a saying that people sincerely believe, "You can never be too rich
or thin." This show will be difficult to remove, but not impossible (if we
all ban together) from the air because Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner of
Carsey-Warner International are involved. In the 1980's and 1990's they made
TV hits
such as "The Cosby Show" and "Roseanne." What's next, a TV comedy show
about "9/11," chronic pain, or cancer?
We are working together to get a petition together and if you are
interested in removing this TV show off the air please contact us and let us
know.
We are also interested in getting another petition together to try and force
these treatment centers who will not accept people who need inpatient
treatment for eating disorders and have to take narcotics for pain management of
their diseases. What about males with eating disorders? Where can they go to
get proper treatment for their eating disorders? The majority of these
treatment centers are designed for females. We would like to see this stopped.
We
are also interested in revitalizing the CA Pain Law. If you are interested
in assisting us in these efforts please let us know. You may us a Jane Doe or
a John Doe. It is past time to band and stand together and let our voices
be heard loud and proud when it comes to our lives and our children's lives,
and the lives of other people who you know are suffering unnessararlly. As
the saying goes, "United we stand, divided we fall."
In conclusion, I am one very angry mother because I cannot get the
medical help for my daughter nor legal help to make these doctors do their
jobs.
How can a doctor do this to anyone and look at him or herself in the mirror
in the morning? First, they should do no harm; that is in their Hippocratic
Oath or should we change it to the Hippocritic Oath? That would fit most of
these doctors who treat chronic pain patients. There are a few doctors, such as
Russell Portenoy, who rally for their patients and other doctors who are
being prosecuted, or should I say persecuted, by the DEA, but ones like him a
few
and far between. Thank you Dr. Portenoy for your courage for all of us
suffering.

on the subject of pain and what is going on in this country. I have both
