Hello!
Thank you for your insightful post regarding the new
program, "Starved", which aired for the first time last night.
I did watch the show, with interest, because I wished to see how the
media could make light of such a serious topic and portray people
with eating disorders as jokes.
However, I was quite surprised to see that this show was not
necessarily a "comedy show" per se, but rather had a mixture of
seriousness about it as well. Also, the show's main focus (in my
opinion) was not focusing directly on their eating dirsorders, but
rather their lives (such as dating, their interactions, etc.), and
the eating disorders seemed to be taking a back seat to some of the
other issues in their lives.
On the other hand, I can truly see how this show can potentially
have the ability to become a negative influence on others, and can
ultimately shed the wrong light on eating disorders. For example,
there is no show where a group of "friends" who are all battling
cancer or aids, or even mental illness for that matter, discuss
their dating lives and interact socially, making light of their
illnesses. It's just bad taste.
So, while I was surprised at the general attitude of the show (it
really wasn't what I expected), I can still say that it should be
either taken off the air, or aired at a much later time slot. I
also have to at least give them credit for airing their disclaimer
at the very beginning about inappropriateness for younger audiences,
etc.
Anyway, again thank you for the insightful and intelligent post.
Have a great day!
