Jason:
I have been anorexic/bulimic for about 10 years now, and I have gone through an
outpatient treatment program. I am proud to say that through extensive therapy
and dedication, I have been eating at least 1 meal a day for about 5 months now.
Regurgitating without actually forcing yourself to do so is normal, according to
my psychologist, doctor, and dietician. It is a combination of the
psychological fear of food (even though you may not be thinking about it) and
physical adaptability to your habits of purging.
My best advice to you is to start small with your eating. Work yourself up to
larger quantities with crackers and bread...and keep them down. Once you
conquer this step, you will be able to work your way up to larger rations of
food.
One thing I did notice with overindulging after not eating was the immense pain
in my intestines. My dietician provided me with a diagram to explain it.
Imagine a hose with no water in it. Once you turn the water on, the entire hose
expands to carry all the water being passed through it. This is exactly what
happens to your digestional tract when you have not eaten for a while or are
enlarging the size of your meals after restraining for such a long time. My
dietician said that pain is mostly associated with this type of disorder.
I just wanted to let you know that what you are feeling and experiencing is
typical in a recovering eating disorder patient. Admire in yourself that you
sought recovery and take pride in the fact that you recognized that you needed
help.
Sincerely,
Jared
