VITAMINS PROTECT AGAINST CATARACTS
The risk of cataracts, may be reduced by long-term use of a daily
multivitamin, recent study findings suggest.
Researchers examined data from more than 3,000 people aged 43 to 86
years.
Individuals who took a multivitamin or a supplement that contained
vitamin C or E for more than 10 years had a 60% lower risk of
developing
a cataract regardless of other risk factors.
Taking the multivitamins or supplements for less than 10 years did not
appear to lower 0the risk.
People who took vitamin pills tended to be:
Female
Physically active
Lower body weights
Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables
This evidence of cataract protection is even more important because as
the ranks of elderly Americans continues to swell, the incidence of
cataracts is expected to triple in the next half century, the
researchers
report.
"There is evidence that certain dietary components, such as vitamins
and
minerals involved in protection against oxidative stress, may have a
role
in slowing cataract development," the study authors write.

I received this from a doctor friend and thought I would share it
with you.
SUCRALOSE [aka "Splenda"] is an artificial sweetener
and derivative of table sugar which also contains
CHLORINE. Prior to approval by the FDA, animal
research showed it shrinks the thymus gland, enlarges
the kidneys, enlarges the liver, and causes kidney
stones.
No long-term or controlled research has been performed
on humans, but toxicologists believe it would cause
damage to your immune and nervous systems.
The situation is eerily similar to that
of ASPARTAME which burst on the scene 15 years ago. I
would suggest checking food labels for and staying
away from foodstuffs that contain sucralose...as well
as another artificial sweetener known as ACESULFAME-K
("Sunette", "Sweet & Safe", "Sweet One").

If you do not want to use sugar. Go to the health food store
and buy Stevia. Its a concentrated liquid sweetener made from
a plant with no calories

SALAD DRESSINGS ARE GOOD FOR YOUR HEART
NEW YORK---The regular consumption of oil-based salad dressings
appears to
protect against fatal heart attacks, according to researchers at
Harvard
University.
In their study, Dr. Frank B. Hu and colleagues found oil and vinegar
dressings were a key dietary source of alpha-linolenic acid, a
polyunsaturated fat that provides a protective benefit to the heart.
The
study results are reported in the May issue of the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition.
The researchers tracked 76,283 women over 10 years as part of the
ongoing
Nurses' Health Study. Beginning in 1984, the women were asked how
frequently
they consumed 116 different foods. Women included in the study had
not been
diagnosed with cancer or cardiovascular disease.
In the course of the follow-up period, 232 women died and 597
developed
heart disease.
"A higher intake of oil and vinegar salad dressing, an important
source of
alpha-linolenic acid, was associated with reduced risk of fatal
ischemic
heart disease when women who consumed this food 5 to 6 or more times
a week
were compared with those who rarely consumed this food," Hu and
colleagues
explain.
Mayonnaise, creamy salad dressings and oil and vinegar dressings were
the
most common dietary source of alpha-linolenic acid in the study.
About 70%
of the alpha-linolenic acid consumed was from vegetable or plant
sources.
There was also a lower risk of fatal heart disease linked to higher
consumption of mayonnaise and creamy dressings, but it was not a
statistically significant reduction.
The popularity of fat-free dressings mean that people may not be
getting
enough good fat, as there are other beneficial fats in liquid
vegetable
oils. The researchers note that "these data raise concern about
widespread
use of fat-free salad dressings, which has eliminated an important
source of
alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acids in the US diet."
