Hi Karen,
My understanding of Dandy syndome, from what i have read, is vestibular loss
on both sides. Do you have vertigo or just chronic imbalance? Have you tried
vestibular rehabilitation? i have alot of the symptoms that you have. It has
been 26 months for me now. But I have noticed that with just the passage of
time the balance problems have improved to some degree and the visual problems
are slowly resolving. When this first started it was sheer hell. i too cannot
walk in the dark and trip over everything and anything. The surgeries they
suggest are to eliminate vertigo but the balance problem gets worse before it
gets better. My one doctor suggested gent injections for me but I too do not
have major hearing problems. i do not want to go deaf for something that may
have no real positive effect.

Hi everyone my name is Karen Thomas. I am 30 years old. I do not
have Menieres, but have been dealing with vertigo for over a year
now. After several tests I was diagnosed with Dandy's Syndrome. At
first the doctor though I had Superior Canal Dehisensce Syndrome.
My eyes jump at loud noises. My eyes will jump around for no reason
also. There are times it is difficult to read the TV guide listing
on the television since they are small and seem to be moving when I
look at them. I struggle to participate in conversations that
numerous people are a part of. I usually end up having to leave
these. I stumble when I walk and the stupid walls seem to jump out
at me as I turn bends. And please do not even ask me to walk in the
dark all by myself because I absolutely cannot do it. If I stand
mith my eyes closed I sway back and forth. Recently my doctor asked
me to march in place with me eyes closed. I viewed this as a form
of torture. My doc placed me on Promethazine and this seemed to
work for awhile. It no longer seems to be helping. My doctor has
suggested that I "kill" my balance nerve in the left ear hoping then
that the right ear will compensate and the vertigo will be gone. He
can do this with antibiotics (this has a high risk of hearing loss -
I have no hearing loss now.) or surgically by cutting the nerve
(very low chance of hearing loss). Has anyone ever undergone either
of these procedures or have any suggestions? Any help/advice would
be greatly appreciated.
