James Photiadis, MD, of Edmond, Oklahoma wrote the following letter in the
Feb 13th Washington Post's Health Section in rebuttal to last week's feature
bemoaning how poor old doc's are getting demoralized with today's managed
care & worries about possible government oversight of their practices and
performances (yeh, sure; when hell freezes over). Dr. Photiadis writes:

"Why shouldn't doctors be discontented? 25 years ago your GYN was
working/practicing in a world where he could bill for anything he wanted to
and practice any way he wanted. He was essentially a living god and could do
no wrong. Well, gee whiz, that was not the reality, they are human like
everybody else. They suffer from the same foibles as anyone else, such as
greed, arrogance and, yes...being self-centered.

The field has become an antiquated dinosaur in terms of its training and
health care delivery, but refuses to even acknowledge its problems, let
alone fix them. Doctors complain that there are too many regulations and
people looking over their shoulders. The reality is that there are too few
regulations and enforcement thereof. Why do you think these regulations
came about in the first place? The managed care industry had and has its
problems, but so do the docs. You in the media have just treated them (the
docs) with kid gloves. It is far past due to take the gloves off and truly
show the medical industry for what it is, and it is definitely not "Marcus
Welby," nor "Gideon's Crossing"!

Second topic: This sounds like a doc you might want to try to contact and
see if he'd talk with you and/or the media. His name is James Photiadis, MD
and he lives in Edmond, Oklahoma. Here's what he wrote in a Feb 13th letter
rebuttal letter to the Post's Health Section piece last week bemoaning how
poor old doc's are getting demoralized with today's managed care & worries
about possible government oversight of their practices and performances
(yeh, sure; when hell freezes over). Dr. Photiadis writes:
