A Bronx jury awarded $2.25 million on Jan. 31 to a woman who claimed that she suffers nerve damage as a result of a nurse practitioner's improper insertion of contraceptive implants. In her suit against Montefiore Medical Center and its Family Health Center, the injured woman, Ferris Kneile, alleged that at least one of the
implants was placed too deep in her left arm and that the resultant scar tissue damaged her ulnar nerve. Kneile contended that the nerve damage has resulted in atrophy, cramping and mild weakness of the hand. The nurse practitioner, who was not directly named in the suit, claimed that the implants were properly inserted and that the nerve damage occurred when Kneile's gynecologist attempted to remove them.
