Here's what a friend had to say on this topic.
"Acupuncture is often effective for shingles, for reasons that are
only partially understood. In most states, practitioners are required
to be licensed and to have completed several years of training. In
California, four years are required. "Training" of course, is not the
same as thinking, so quality cannot be easily predicted. An
acupuncture college probably has some well qualified acupuncturists on
it's staff. They often supervise students in their clinical
experience. In general, being treated by a student under supervision
is OK. The needling is the easiest part to learn. The prescriptions,
which the clinic director gives, are what's most important."
