Dear Reader:

High Achievers have great strengths. They also have
correspondingly great weaknesses. The very leadership style that
worked so wonderfully in one situation may be self-defeating in
another. This occurs most often when a gifted entrepreneur starts
a business that grows quickly--perhaps too quickly. Let me give
you an example.

Jim's once high profit margins were declining in spite of revenue
well over three million. He owns an information technology
consulting and networking integration firm. Three years ago he
started small, with three employees.

A high achiever, Jim was highly motivated and during their daily
contacts his enthusiasm and motivation rubbed off on his workers.
Having good intuition about the needs of his business, Jim made
all the decisions in the small company. His business grew fast as
he built a reputation for producing electronic solutions for his
clients. He grew to 25 workers and then his troubles began.

Jim became hard to get hold of. He spent most of his time
responding to the urgent needs of his clients or putting out
fires. He intended to make business plans but never got around to
it.

Workers complained they no longer got enough direction to handle
the increased amount of work. Employees needed a structure and a
system to help them make decisions. Without any systems for
processing the higher volume, they simply had to work harder and
longer. They no longer felt valued by Jim. In the early years,
the company attracted and kept excellent workers, then they
stared having high turnover.

Jim lost some key clients due to mistakes having been made on
some projects. They no longer trusted they will receive the
reliable service they had enjoyed in the early days.

In spite of higher sales, as a result of the lost business,
mistakes, and employee turnover, profit margins headed down fast.

What happened to this once successful company? The owner was
using methods that worked successfully for him in the past, when
the company was small, but became outmoded by the rapid growth of
his company.

The company grew beyond Jim's wingspan--the area where he could
make the right decision based on his instincts. When the company
grew beyond this wingspan, Jim was in unfamiliar territory and
his instincts lead him into making decisions that worked in the
former situation but in the new circumstances were wrong
decisions.

His impressive strengths that made him a high achiever and
launched a successful electronics company no longer worked in his
bigger company. To avoid disaster, Jim decided to change his
leadership style. Jim hated the idea of down sizing his company,
or hiring managers to manage for him. He chose to change his
leadership style with the help of a coach.

Here are the specific shifts Jim made in his leadership style.

Jim became a good communicator. He had been a poor communicator.
He tended to forget that people can't read his mind. He also
tended to think faster than the average person.

So Jim learned to communicate with his workers like he does with
customers--listen carefully, ask for constant feedback, and to
slow down for 'detail thinkers.'Jim used special assessments to
tell him how to best communicate with his workers.

Jim knows his purpose and role and hence does not need anybody's
help in setting his goals; but most employees do need help in
clarifying goals and objectives.

So Jim devoted time to help his people clarify their goals and
objectives He created an atmosphere of trust where it is safe for
everybody to admit their needs.

Being highly motivated, Jim does not need supervision but most
employees do. So Jim started providing supervision and support
for his people to meet their goals and objectives. He also
provided a structure and a system to help his workers make
decisions.

This took time, so Jim decided to give up his role of hand
holding his clients. Realizing that this customer service
contributed to his success, he hired specialists to take over
this role.

This allowed Jim to cut down his excessive hours. He was
encouraged to take care of himself first. After all, he was the
foundation of his business. If he burned out, the business is
sure to suffer.

In essence, Jim shifted from working in his business to working
on his business--from personally providing customer service, to
leading and managing his people. Now he has personal time for
family and friends. These changes eliminated the chaos in his
business and his profit margins are heading up.

If you are reading this article today, you are likely among
those who are working an online business. Unfortunately, you
have already learned that finding customers is not as easy as
you once thought it would be. Many people have broken the bank
and their dreams searching for that first customer or second
customer.

Having discovered the challenge of finding customers has left
you with a feeling of not knowing quite what to do. That is
why you read ezines or visit websites like this one. You are
searching for the knowledge that you feel you are lacking. You
open each new issue of each ezine you subscribe to looking for
the help you need to find your first customer or even to
increase upon the customers you have already found.

THE GREATEST CHALLENGE WE FACE

See, the greatest challenge we all face is not finding people
who need our products or services. Instead, our greatest
challenge is actually building trust in the hearts and minds
of the people who need our products or services. This is why
most people have such difficulty in finding the customers we
all need.

Online marketers cannot establish trust with one single
advertisement! They cannot establish trust with one impression
of their banner! One might get lucky and get the click-through
on the advertisement or banner, but that click-through will
only generate a sale for one in two hundred visitors. Scary,
isn't it?

To stop and realize that the average on the Internet is five
sales per thousand visitors can make it frightening to most
beginners to online marketing. The term "beginner" in this
area could apply to anyone who has been marketing online for
less than 3 years. Yes, it is a steep learning curve on the
web! Most people quit before they ever get to the three year
mark --- quitting long before they have given themselves the
chance to succeed.

Most marketing polls suggest that it will take you seven
exposures before you will have earned enough trust to get a
sale online or offline. What that means is that your potential
customer must see your name and your ads a minimum of seven
times before you can expect their interest to peak enough to
give you a second look.

ASTRONOMICAL ODDS

That is what makes advertising online so very difficult. With
more than 934 million people online as of September 2004,
  ( http://thephantomwriters.com/redir/peopleonline.html )
the chance of hitting the same person twice with your
advertising is slim to none if you are advertising your
wares the same as most people are.

Most people try to advertise with the scatter shot approach.
They throw an ad out there hoping to hit as many people as
possible and then move on to the next ad or next advertising
medium. With this scatter shot approach, their chance of
hitting one person twice is astronomical! The chance of
hitting that person the required seven times is nearly
impossible.

The "Rule of Seven" is why most marketers begin their own
ezine. As a publisher, it is easy to meet your seven exposure
requirement in the trust building process. The difficulty of
this method is growing the mailing list size. As a publisher,
it is fairly easy to keep subscribers --- getting the
subscribers is the real difficulty.

While I do recommend for the marketer to start the ezine, the
process of building a client base from an ezine is the slow
boat to China approach. It could realistically take years to
break the plateau of your first 1000 subscribers!

WHICH OF THESE NAMES DO YOU RECOGNIZE?

Let me suggest a few names to you:

Willie Crawford, Pamela Cole Harris, Daniel Lamaute,
Valerie Giles, Dan Lok, Isaiah Hull, Brent Filson,
Charles and Holly Egner, Mary Jeanne Vincent, Chris Marlow,
Claire Bowes, Colin Hartness, Adriana Copaceanu, Geela,
Neil Millar, Bill Lampton Ph.D., Mal Keenan, Jim Stone,
Steve Preston, Trevor Johnson, Liz Beresford, Keith Bryan,
Diana Barnum, Carole Martin, Dr. Joseph J. Berke,
Theresa Gabriel, Greg Reid, Alan Cheng, Jim Kelly,
Dr. Mani Sivasubramanian, Jeanette Fisher, Ivana Katz,
Rosalyn Bronstein, Dianne Wandruff, Gordon Bellows,
Steve Robichaud and Andrew Wroblewski, Silvana Clark,
Darrell Knox, Craig Romero, Ulli G. Niemann, John Colanzi,
Kamau Austin, Karl Augustine, Kate Smalley, Ken Leonard Jr.,
Patsi Krakoff, Steve Nash, Paul Kyriazi, Laura Turner,
    W. Troy Swezey, Richard D. Bailey, Scott F. Geld,
Donald Harris, Julie Plenty, Darlene Arechederra,
Ernest Quansah, Dan Brown, Lee Traupel, John Gergye,
Debra Cohen, Larry Tracy, Mark Brandenburg, Jean Hanson,
    Stone Evans, and Bill Platt.

Of these 65 people, how many of these names do your recognize?
Of the names that you do recognize, how many of them can you
tell me what kind of business they are in? Or what their
website is? Or what they sell?

Further, of the people whose names you do recognize, what is
your gut feeling about them? How many of them do you feel that
you can trust?

Chances are really good that you have heard of at least one
third of these people. I can almost guarantee that you have
heard of at least one person on this list. How do I know this?

It is simple.

TWO COMMON AND SHARED TRAITS

These 65 people all share two common traits:

1. They are all people who publish free-reprint articles to be
distributed to publishers the world over. Each of them provide
top-notch content that appeals to a much larger audience.

2. All of these writer's and netpreneurs used the Phantom Writers
Article Distribution Service to get their articles into the
mailboxes of more than 12,000 publishers and webmasters
looking for top-quality reprint content they can place into
    their ezines and their websites.

    http://thePhantomWriters.com/x.pl/tpw/index.html

Ezine publishers and webmasters the world over are looking for
free content that they can supply to their readers. They all
understand what a past Yahoo! study emphasized. Content is
King! Most site visitors are looking for information of some
kind when they go to a site or subscribe to an ezine.

Publishers and webmasters understand that the best way to
attract and keep traffic and readers is to provide folks on
the web what they want. By using free-reprint articles, they
are able to provide their readers and their site visitors with
the high-quality content subscribers and surfers demand.

A POWERFUL TESTIMONY

If there is a single name on my list that you recognize and
feel as if you can trust, then you have the strongest testimony
available to the power of using free-reprint articles to build
your business.

If you are not confident to strike out writing your own
articles, there are several people who are willing to hire
their own article writing skills out to folks just like you.
Just visit your favorite search engine and type in the search
terms "ghost written articles" or another similar terms.

What it boils down to is this, if you are in business on the
web and are looking to find your first or your ten thousandth
customer, you should seriously consider striking out into
the free-reprint market. If you are not comfortable as a
writer, then you should absolutely explore the possibility
of hiring a ghost writer to write promotional articles for
you and your business.

Double Whammy: Prevent Cancer and Lose Weight in One Fell Swoop!
Copyright © 2004 Laura Turner
New Body News and Wellness Letter
http://www.New-Body-News.com

Today, I've learned some great news and I’m shouting it from
the rooftops! Hear Ye! Hear Ye! According to new research,
you can prevent cancer and lose weight: both at the same time!
What’s more? It’s easy! Easy, that is, if you are willing to
make just a few lifestyle adjustments (You are willing, aren't
you?).

Here’s the skinny: In her new book titled: “The Body Restoration
Plan,” Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton tells us, ingesting chemicals
- the bad ones that cause cancer and illness – will also prevent
weight loss. Yes, you've heard me correctly. And here’s just
one reason the accusation makes perfect sense: If farmers are
using hormones to plump up cattle for farming, this plumping up
can wind up you-know-where!

What I’ll attempt to do in this article, then, is weave together
both this newfound weight-loss information with the ongoing
cancer prevention study of Dr. Samuel Epstein, Chairman of the
Cancer Prevention Coalition (Check out his cancer report through
the link in Step One, below).

What follows are the preventative measures I've created with
this insight. See if you can use this simple action plan in
effort to adjust your lifestyle, keep you body free of toxins
and induce or maintain weight loss.

Step One: Get Informed

The first step in your action plan: Inform yourself. Get the
big picture. To stay on top of the latest research and prevention
recommendations, visit the Cancer Prevention Coalition’s website.
Check them out at: http://www.preventcancer.com

Here, you will also find the Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. “The
How To Stop Cancer Before It Starts Campaign,” 66-page report.
Dr. Epstein is the chairman for the Cancer Prevention Coalition
and is dedicated to keeping the public informed on the latest
issues.

Step Two: Police Your Job

It may take a little effort to keep your workplace honest and
hazard free. Here are a couple ideas:

If you are working in manufacturing, check with the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Be sure
your company complies with all anti-hazard requirements.
Here’s their site: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/homepage.html

Also, check out the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA): http://www.osha.gov publications to be sure your company
is in compliance.

All offices and workplaces (especially ones dealing with
hazardous substances and volatile chemicals) should aim to
create a safety group assembled of employees. If your company
doesn’t have one, talk to your supervisor about forming a safety
group. Demand excellence and safety in your workplace. Again,
review the OSHA standards and aim to comply.

Also, if you are looking for a job, check out the company
track record. Be sure to check up on any health issues or
cancer incidences before you accept the position.

Step Three: Police Your Lifestyle

There are several, obvious ways to clean up your own atmosphere
and make it safe from cancer causing agents. Here are just a
couple lifestyle changes to pay closer attention to:

If you smoke: Quit, period! If you are finding it difficult
to quit, however, employ some extra help. In many states
non-smoking laws are helping but, if you’re still having a
difficult kicking the habit, check out your local Smoke Enders.
Log on to the Smoke Enders website to find a group nearest you:
http://www.smokenders.com

If you are a drinker, use alcohol in moderation. Although there
is no substantial proof that alcohol causes cancer, heavy
drinking can increase your risk.

Step Four: Police Your Diet:

In the same way that moderate drinking is safer than indulging,
be aware of your overuse of high fat and high calorie food sources.

Most sources suggest a diet low in fat and high in fiber to
protect your body against disease. Make small changes: aim
to replace high sugar foods with increased portions of beans,
grains, fruits and vegetables (Remember: rinse all fruits and
vegetables before consumption).

Also, decrease large portions of dairy, red meat and animal fat.
Replace them with protein sources from fish and poultry. For
and excellent, preventative diet program check out “Eat To
Beat Cancer,” by J. Robert Hatherill, Ph.D.

Finally, be aware of the water you are drinking. There are some
great carbon filtration systems that can be attached to your
water source or externally to filter your water. According to
Elson M. Haas, M.D. in his book “Staying Healthy With Nutrition,”
solid carbon block systems are superior.

Step Five: Police What You are Buying

When purchasing products for personal use, here are a few
guidelines to consider:

Drugs —- Read package inserts and check for any references to
cancer. If you find something questionable, weigh your
options; search for alternative methods.

Cosmetics —- Make every effort not to buy products with “Warning”
messages. If the label says the safety of the product has not
been determined, look for products which use natural ingredients
and are free from synthetics.

Consumer Products -- Aim to avoid purchasing aerosol sprays; they
will often cause you to inhale a higher than normal concentration
of chemicals.

Pesticides -- If you use them, be aware that many pesticides are
carcinogenic. Ask the retail store or company about biological
friendly alternatives.

Cleaning agents -- Always check product labels. If there are
“Warnings” listed, opt for something safer. Always check your
shopping list against the current edition of the “Safe Shopper’s
Bible,” written by David Steinman and Samuel S. Epstein, M.D.,
before making your purchases.

Step Six: Police Your Family History & Other Sources of Exposure

Does you family have a history of cancer? Early detection methods
will often prevent you from big trouble. For women: a yearly pap
smear and pelvic exam will often detect early signs of uterine or
cervical cancers. Also, aim for a monthly breast self-exam.

Men and women: Ask your doctor for recommendations on colon
exams, and Men: ask your doctor for recommendations on PSA
testing. Also, keep your eyes peeled for new preventative
strategies and get as much information as you can about them.

Always check your skin for any odd looking lesions; make it a
habit to take a quick overall scan of your body, frequently.
Also, aim to avoid UV lamps and over exposure to the sun. As
often as possible wear a sunscreen, Dr. Epstein suggests one
containing para-aminobenzoic acid. And, if you work outside,
be sure to wear zinc oxide on your lips and nose.

With just a few hours of time, and these few simple steps, you
could be extending your life and maintaining your waistline, to
boot. It’s well worth the effort! After all, in the words of
Hippocrates himself, “Prayer indeed is good, but while calling
on the gods a man should himself lend a hand.”

The Real Story Of The Little Engine That Could
Copyright © 2004 Geela
Author of "The American Dream"
http://www.geela.com/

Gone are the days when self-publishing was synonymous with
self-defeat. Authors such as Deepak Chopra, Mark Victor Hansen
and Neale Donald Walsch, originally self-published successfully
before selling their books to major publishers (in order to gain
even wider distribution) so we now know that self-published
books can match and even surpass the quality and the success of
books released by the major publishers. As such they deserve
serious consideration. And while the small press may not enjoy
the same level of resources as the large press, still in terms
of quality and the ability to reach the ultimate decision makers
– the buyers, the small press has proven that they can compete
with the “big guys,” with enviable success.

Even before Geela’s self-published book, THE AMERICAN DREAM -
An Immigrant’s True Life Story of Winning Against All Odds was
released, it had already generated rave reviews and feature
stories in addition to offers for representation by top literary
agents, offers from various major publishing houses and even an
offer for a movie deal based on Geela’s life’s journey. However,
Geela passed on these lucrative offers mainly because it would
have taken at least two years for the book to be published,
if not first abandoned because of internal politics of the
publisher. In addition, it was clear that Geela would lose the
creative control, the direction of the book and the original
vision of the book in the process of publishing it. Since
timing, and maintaining the integrity and the original vision
of the book, were critical to the success of the project, she
made a conscious decision to take the road less traveled – by
self-publishing.

Establishing a new company is never easy, however, Geela is no
stranger to this process. Years ago she successfully established
her own record company called GLOBAL VISION RECORDS and released
many albums including Geela’s acclaimed album THE VEIL OF LIFE,
which has touched many lives both domestically and
internationally. Here is a sample of what other well-respected
people are saying about it:

“Geela’s ‘The Veil of Life’ is like a magic carpet ride
around the world, celebrating the human spirit in the
    realm of infinite possibilities.”

    --- Deepak Chopra, best-selling author

“Geela is a rare combination of brilliant, polished
professional excellence coupled with heartfelt, spiritually
inspired music and lyrics. She creates and writes from the
heart and sings from the soul! She’s just what we need to
take us higher at the dawning of the new Millennium!”

--- Jill Lawrence, Wisdom Radio Network
                       (a nationally syndicated show)

Geela’s growing success in the entertainment industry along
with her passion to help children’s causes, resulted in the
establishment of an innovative nonprofit organization dedicated
to promoting children’s causes and world peace, called ONE
SPIRIT, ONE WORLD (http://www.onespiritoneworld.org). In fact,
the book was written primarily for the purpose of drawing
attention to the timely mission of her nonprofit organization
with the belief that through personal empowerment and innovative
solutions others too can have the courage to believe that
the possible can exceed the impossible (including global
unity) no matter what the odds.

GLOBAL VISION MEDIA (a consolidation of Global Vision Records
and Global Vision Books) is in many ways like The Little Engine
That Could, experiencing a momentum that keeps on growing every
day by drawing on successful past experiences, extensive
resources combined with a lot of creativity. However, success
is not a one-man show. It takes a dedicated staff, working in
a joint effort with key people in the industry, a comprehensive
marketing and promotional plan including on-line marketing and
promotion, a national media campaign (print/radio/TV), and
personal appearances by the author to make the book a best-seller
and that’s the track that Geela is on. The title recently hit
the best-seller list on Amazon.com. When you put THE AMERICAN
DREAM next to a book released by a major publishing company –
one can’t tell which book is self-published. That’s because
Geela’s book is a high quality book with outstanding packaging
backed by a solid infrastructure and a comprehensive marketing
and promotional plan using similar marketing and promotional
strategies as the “big guys,” in terms of securing national
distribution (wholesalers and distributors) and national media
coverage (in a joint effort with top PR and marketing firms)
to support the success of the book on all levels.

Mastering the art of the possible is at the heart of Geela’s
book THE AMERICAN DREAM, which is about overcoming obstacles
and winning against all odds. It is intended to help others to
go from poverty to prosperity and achieving excellence. This
universal theme, along with a timely message of hope, which
is in great demand particularly during uncertain times, gives
Geela’s book a mass appeal both domestically and internationally.
Geela is a living proof that the possible always exceeds the
impossible. Her story not only captures the true spirit of
The American Dream but it also makes you a believer in dreams,
particularly when it’s written by a female immigrant who came
from humble beginnings with no money or support system
whatsoever. After years of great sacrifice, she finally
achieved tremendous success as defined by The American Dream,
with many awards and a blossoming career only to discover that
there is more to life than achieving material success. She
finds that The American Dream is based on a materialistic values
system that is a dead-end to anyone who is after riches of the
heart. Geela’s ultimate goal is to help others to achieve their
own seeming “Impossible Dream,” while achieving global peace
and prosperity for all. Her unusual and extensive experiences
(including a near-death experience, serving in the Israeli Air
Force, gaining unusual abilities from healing to composing
without the benefit of being able to play any musical
instruments) and the profound insights she gained in the process
of “making it” can enormously help others on their own journey.

The Miracle of Holiday Networking

Santa*s Secret to Holiday Cheer
http://www.SantasSecretSuccess.com

Do thoughts of going to all those parties during the Holidays
leave you feeling a bit short on the joy that this season is
supposed to evoke? If so, Santa has the perfect solution to
get you in the mood.

He knows that the Holidays are in fact a "most wonderful time of
the year" to network and meet new people. That's why he trains
Santas all over the world to adopt his jolly demeanor and make
sure he doesn't forget anyone on his list. By the time his
Santas-in-training graduate, networking becomes as natural as
breathing... just like it is for the real Santa!

Yet for many of us, taking on such a demeanor to succeed seems
like too much "hard work". So what if, you stepped outside your
preconceived notions for a moment and looked through Santa's
eyes? Would you not then see a wonderful atmosphere of
merriment that makes it even easier to meet new people and
reconnect with others you've not seen in a while? With everyone
infected with the feeling of the Season, what could be a more
perfect time to begin "trying on" your new way of growing
your business.

Every smart Santa knows that networking, when done like a
"seasoned pro", can exponentially grow your business and
widen your circle of influence. After all, who can resist a warm
Santa-like smile and a twinkle of the eye? And what about those
other endearing qualities of his like always having a gift on
hand, promptly responding to all fan email, delegating with
finesse and faith, and paying full attention to everything you
say. No wonder everyone falls under his magic spell.

For those of you who've already graduated from Santa's finishing
school, you know first-hand the many benefits of networking.
Have you ever stopped to add up the lifetime value of an ideal
referral? That's what happens when you know how to convey the
merits of your services to others. And how about the resulting
referrals from serving that perfect referral well? Likewise, the
same holds true when you do onto others the same professional
favor.

So why not begin now... while the Season provides you the perfect
playing field to fine-tune your style to become a year-round
Santa. Then you'll grow to understand that networking is more
than just being in the right place, at the right time, with the
right people. Rather, it's the art of having your heart in the
right place and your mind set on being a resource to others.

Alas, what if for all these wonderful miracles of networking,
you still feel that talking to strangers is more difficult than
going to the dentist? Know that Santa has been listening to make
it feel less like pulling teeth.

He's even jotting down a few "insider" tips" he's gathered over
the centuries to help you feel more at ease with mingling:

* Greet people as if they're old friends and you've not
   seen them in a while.
* Be both interesting and interested in people. Use the
person's name, ask open-ended questions and be
genuinely interested in what they say.
* Be conscious of your body language so you appear
receptive and always respect the personal space of others.
* Practice (until you sound natural) an effective 30-second
response to the question, "What do you do?" Leave your
listener intrigued and wanting to know more.
* Continue that memory of warmth with random acts
   of kindness.

Above all, seek to understand others. For it is not your
credentials that sell you, it's becoming a trusted resource
and friend. Then your Rolodex will runneth over... all year
through!

Outsourcing and Your Business

Outsourcing is an established way of doing business today,
allowing companies to maximize their budgets and resources
— and generate better products.

Also referred to as subcontracting, outsourcing simply means
acquiring a product or service rather than producing it
in-house. Outsourcing is suitable for just about any industry.
In the administrative field, for instance, a variety of
activities can easily be farmed out to a subcontractor,
including word processing, data entry, transcribing, research,
contact management and event planning.

Outsourcing is extremely common practice within human resource
(HR) departments. In fact, two-thirds of HR departments
outsource at least one activity, according to research by the
Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. and the Society for Human
Resource Management. The top five outsourced HR activities
are employee assistance/counseling, flexible spending account
administration, pre-retirement counseling, outplacement services
and pension/retirement plan administration.

Weighing the Outsourcing Option

When deciding whether outsourcing is a viable option, a company
should consider all of the issues involved. Should the projects
be kept in-house because they’re critical and employees need to
know how to do them themselves? Also, does the company have a
sourcing plan, staff members to oversee contracts or a philosophy
that supports the outsourcing initiative? If it does, outsourcing
may be ideal for your business. The bottom line is every business
is different and companies should carefully weigh the benefits
of outsourcing.

Benefits of Outsourcing

Many companies that choose to outsource do so because they don’t
have or can’t attract the people skills they need. Subcontracting
gives them access to a much greater pool of resources. It also
enables companies to cut cost by 10 to 30 percent, depending on
the industry. They can purchase services on an as-needed basis,
instead of maintaining a full-time employee. This allows them
to avoid paying employee-related expenses such as salaries,
unemployment taxes, paid vacation and sick leave, insurance —
which results in a lower overhead.

In another aspect, outsourcing can help a company focus on its
core business, creating a competitive advantage within its
industry. Subcontracting also affords the business the chance
to get the best job possible from the people it hires. By using
a third party supplier, a company has more room to be critical
of the kind of services provided. If the work is done in-house,
company ties may interfere with the final product.

Outsourcing also offers a wide variety of other benefits,
including:

  · Faster setup of the function or service
  · Acquire innovative ideas
  · Increase commitment and energy in non-core areas
  · Improve credibility and image by associating with superior
    providers
  · Greater flexibility and ability to define the requisite
    service more readily
  · Less dependency upon internal resources
  · Greater control of budget
  · Greater ability to control delivery dates
  · Increase flexibility to meet changing business conditions
  · Purchase of industry best practice
  · Generate cash by transferring assets to the provider
  · Gain market access and business opportunities through the
    supplier’s network
  · Turn fixed costs into variable costs

The “Greatest” Leaders Are Often The Worst Leaders
Copyright © 2004 Brent Filson
The Filson Leadership Group, Inc.
http://www.actionleadership.com/

It's a common occurrence, a CEO leads a company to record
earnings, retires and in months, those once high-flying earnings
are dropping like shot ducks.

Observers blame the new leadership team. But most likely
the observers are wrong. It's not just the new leaders who are
screwing up. Instead, it was most likely the former CEO. Yes,
the former, supposedly great CEO. Look to him for what went
wrong — and what went wrong provides lessons for leaders at all
levels.

The reasons are clear but seldom recognized. They get
back to the raison d' etre of leadership — which is not the
performance of the individual leader but the improved results of
those being led. The problems lie in the definition of results.
For when results are defined narrowly, i.e. in strict terms of
share, margin, shareholder value, profits, organizations lose
their elasticity.

And the quality of organizational elasticity is linked to
its culture of leadership, leadership with a broader vision of
results, encompassing the necessity to hire and develop people
who lead others to get results.

So when decline follows the departure of great leaders,
the safe bet is that those "great" leaders haven't hired and
developed leaders — and so really weren't great at all, no
matter what results they got. In fact, they were quite poor.

To paraphrase Vince Lombardi on winning, getting good
leaders for your team isn't everything, it's the only thing.
The moment that you decide to hire, that very moment, is the
living, breathing future of your organization.

A curious chemistry takes place in the hiring process.
We don't just reach outward, we also reach inward. In hiring
leaders, we invariably hire ourselves — our strengths and
weaknesses. So the hand we reach out to shake is not just the
other person's hand, it's our hand. Hire to our strengths, we
hire strong leaders. Hire to our weaknesses, we hire weak
leaders.

I know a brilliant, young executive in a multimillion
dollar manufacturing company whose ambition to become CEO of
that company may founder on his maddening propensity to hire
leaders who may be good but who are none-the-less not the
very best.

That's because the leaders he hires must have what is an
unstated but at the same time real skill: the ability to curry
his favor. Those leaders are ostensibly qualified. But they
are often not the very best of the pool because they come
equipped with that extraneous skill.

Since results on his teams are also defined as the care and
feeding of his ego, that executive is hiring to his weaknesses,
so he continually makes what may ultimately turn out to be
garbage-in-garbage-out hiring decisions that can ultimately
wreck his ambitions.

On the other hand, I know another young executive, not
nearly as brilliant, but whose hiring dictum may very well get
him farther along in life.

The dictum is: Hire leaders who can not only do well in
this position but in the next position and maybe even the
position beyond that.

In other words, he hires to his strengths, his inner sense
of self-confidence, which allows him to surround himself with
people who are smarter and in some ways more capable than he —
and so is creating a rising tide of action and results that
will further his career in powerful ways.

As Steven Jobs said, "I don't hire people to tell them
what to do but to tell me what to do."

Yet hiring people who are capable of supplanting you isn't
enough. Do more. Actively develop the knowledge, skills and
careers of those leaders to give them the best possible chance
of supplanting you.

An epitaph on a 1680 New England gravestone speaks to this:

         What I gave, I have.
         What I spent, I had.
         What I left, I lost.
         By not giving it.

That can be an epitaph for failed leaders. By not giving
to your leaders, not developing their skills and careers, you
lose them, lose the opportunity to have their riches enrich
you.

Nobody is a success unless others want them to be. And
when you have a passionate desire for their success, for helping
them improve and achieve their goals, when they know that
working on your team will be a defining experience of their
career — then you will have people who want like hell for you
to be a success.

The decline following the departure of "great" leaders
indicates that those leaders were most likely control-monsters,
commanders not convincers, great at getting jobs done
themselves but not challenging others to do them.

And when those others are ignored, they become inept.

So let's take an additional yardstick to our leaders and
measure their total value, both when they're there and after
they have left. Link that value to deferred compensation,
bonuses, stock options for executives and to partially-delayed
evaluations for middle managers and supervisors — or whatever.

When leaders define their performance beyond their tenure,
they will most likely pay more attention to those two factors
that are absolutely necessary for any organization's continued
well-being: getting and developing exceptional leaders.

Having Trouble Making Money? You Might Have A Nasty Case of MCN.
Copyright © 2004 Isaiah Hull
Work at Home Right Now
http://www.workathomerightnow.net/

Do you spend the majority of your time trying to
convince your prospects that they absolutely must
buy your product? Are you experiencing low conversion
rates and high negative-response rates? Are you starting
to feel like internet marketing success really is
just a myth? Do you think everyone is lying to you?

These are all symptoms of MCN, marketing in a crowded
niche. If you're dealing with them on a regular basis,
chances are there are just plain too many people
selling a similiar product to your same targeted
customer base.

But don't worry--this isn't necessarily a bad thing.
In fact, realizing this information may be the best
thing that ever happens to your business.

But now that you do know you are marketing in
an overcrowded niche, you must choose a specific path
for your business if you want to acheive profit.

You must decide if you want to a) prepare for
a long fight to the top (of your niche); b) market your
same product to a different group of buyers; or c) abandon
your product, find a profitable niche, and then build a
new business around it.

Of course, there are pros and cons to each decision, but
as long as you recognize the need to make a decision--and
then create a clear, honest business plan to make money
with that choice--you wont run into trouble.

Let's start with option A:

PREPARE FOR A LONG FIGHT TO THE TOP

If your niche is so crowded that you haven't broken into
profit after several of months of marketing, this does not
mean that your niche is unprofitable--it means the exact
opposite: your niche is so unbelievably in-demand and
profitable that everyone is trying to build around it.

You may not be making money with this route now, but if you
stick with it and continually make progress, then
you are almost guaranteed to make an enormous amount
of money when your business reaches critical mass--when
your website has a lot of backlinks from high-traffic
sites; when your webpage is ranked highly in search engines
for your specific niche keywords; when other marketers
in your niche begin to seek you out for interviews and for
joint ventures; and when you begin making your own products
to fill the gaps in your niche. . .

'Preparing for a long fight to the top' also means not
relying on your main business as a cashcow--as your source
of income--for the time being. This is always a huge
mistake.

Maybe you can write google adwords for affiliate
programs to make extra cash while you wait for your business
to take off; OR maybe you can budget your main business to
save money; OR maybe you can pick up a part-time or
full-time job to ensure you have enough money in the bank
to live off of while you build your business.

There are a number of viable options, but whatever you
choose, you must remember that your business absolutely
will not earn you a full-time income until you become
a big-player in your niche. You must recognize this
and structure your business plan around it; otherwise,
you are setting yourself up for failure.

If this is not a good option for you, then you must
consider option B:

MARKET YOUR PRODUCT TO A DIFFERENT GROUP OF BUYERS

When you think of your website, you may only be able
to think of a couple words to describe it--the keywords
you have been telling yourself you must use to make money,
to get rankings, to make sales.

If these keywords are not working for you--if you either
have a low conversion rate or poor rankings on search
engines--then you must consider marketing to a different
group of buyers. You can sell the same product to
an entirely different group and radically change your
conversion rate and profit margin.

You can begin by finding new keywords to better target
potential customers. Pay-per-click search engine
advertising is one of the best ways to do this. You can
use overture's and google's tools to create a bigger,
more specific set of keywords and then find out
which keywords reach a respectable market and
which ones draw a high conversion rate. Mix and match
until you have the best possible set.

Use ad tracking as much as possible to scientifically
determine which ads are doing the best. Once you have
the best set, optimize your website for those keywords.
Figure out what people are thinking when they type in
those exact words--what solution they are looking for
and for what problem--and then find those people elsewhere
and market to them in different ways.

And if this option wont work for you, then you must resort
to something entirely different--option c:

ABANDON YOUR PRODUCT AND FIND A PROFITABLE NICHE

Sometimes you just run out of options and have to switch
products. I personally would never suggest taking this
route unless it comes down to either a) quitting marketing
altogether or b) giving up on your current situation.

If it comes down to this, just switch your products and
find another one that you wont have to fight so hard to
sell.

This time, when you select your product, make sure you
lazer-target a niche that will undoubtably be more
profitable and easier to break into. Again, you can use
PPCs and adwords to find which niches are overcrowded
and which niches desparately need sellers.

You want to pick a specific product to market to a specific
crowd with specific keywords that will provide a specific
solution for a specific problem.

Be specific.

When you find this specific niche, build your business
around it. Profit will flow in naturally.

Does Your Business Suffer From Paralysis By Analysis?
Copyright © 2004 Willie Crawford
Profit Magician
http://ProfitMagician.com

Let me ask you a simple question. "Now that you've spent months,
perhaps years, studying how to build an on-line business, are you
close to reaching your goals?" Have you started building that
business? You've read hundreds of ebooks, hundreds of ezine
articles, and gone through several courses. HONESTLY, you
already know all that you need to know to make that dream a
reality.

Now it's just a matter of putting some of what you already know
into action. Yes, some of what you know can become dated.
That's why it's critical that you put it into action now. You
need to apply what you've already learned to get your business
going. As things change, you need to read the industry
publications and news to keep current, but information is
growing exponentially... you'll never know it all.

You'll never be completely current, but you can't let that
paralyze you into inaction.

"Money likes people who act fast!" That's what my buddy, Dr.
Joe Vitale teaches. When he gets an idea, he acts upon it,
IMMEDIATELY. That's totally unlike the majority of (less
successful) people. They get an idea, and then they spend weeks,
perhaps even months, thinking of all of the reasons why it might
not work. Think it through, but don't over analyze! Don't
become a victim of paralysis by analysis.

While you're thinking about it, someone else is acting upon
"your" idea. Even if you introduce a similar product later, the
market usually remembers who did it first. Think about Coke,
Xerox, and Kleenex. They all have competitors, but they
dominate segments of their markets because they burned
themselves into their customers' consciousness, and were also
the first to introduce certain products! Yes, innovative
competitors, who responded to market conditions more deftly,
did out position them in some segments of their market, but
not before they made huge profits for a very long time.

As we look at those starting on-line businesses, and why they
don't move forward more often, the most common reason is
glaringly obvious. Usually they have too many choices.

Sometimes, when we have too many choices, we refuse to make
any choice. By default, we choose to do nothing. Out of fear of
making the wrong choice, and losing out on what's offered by the
other choices, we DON'T choose, and miss ALL of the
opportunities.

If the above describes your primary problem, here's the
solution....

Simply choose an option. If necessary, write them all on
pieces of paper, put the pieces in a bag, and then reach in and
pick out one! Narrow your options down to the top 3 to 5, put
them in the bag, and get started on the one that you draw first.
It's better just to prioritize based upon what needs to be done
first. However, the "bag system" works if you need a tool for
choosing ;-)

Another problem we sometimes encounter is - we don't act upon
knowledge because if it's something we think we already knew, we
assume everyone knows it, and therefore acting upon it will give
us no competitive advantage. Even if it is something you already
intuitively knew, look at whether or not others are using that
knowledge. If not, you will gain a competitive advantage by using
it.

An example of this is that I recently read a report on "how to
get a better than #1 position on Google and Yahoo overnight."
The report cost over $100 and was only 22 pages. When I buy
information, the value is based upon content rather than the thud
factor. Actually it's more valuable to me when I don't have to
wade through a lot of "fluff" to get to the few actionable
morsels in most documents that I read. Time is my most
precious commodity; it's probably yours too.

The report mentioned above showed exactly how that author
had achieve this incredible feat, explained why it worked, and
explained how I could do it too. The stumbling block was that the
information contained in the report made too much sense to me
intuitively. I had one of those "I already knew that!" moments.
However, when I asked myself if I'd actually effectively used
that knowledge that I though I already had, my answer was
"no." When I applied the knowledge, I achieved the desired
results :-)

The above example reminds us of something I often preach... the
money is not in the knowing, it's in the doing. Anytime I get
involved in explaining to a person with a "regular job" what I do
on-line they understand. When I explain that I take pieces of
information, compile them into ebooks or software, and then
charge people for the privilege of downloading it, their eye
light up. When I explain to them that they can do something
similar, they nod their heads... then they go back to doing a job
that they hate and never even try to break free of the rat race.

Knowing is not the same as doing. Knowing does not achieve
the same results as doing.

Fortunately, you're already different from the people mentioned
above. You've already decided to take responsibility for making
your life better. Now that you recognize what's probably holding
you back, you have only one thing to do. As the title of an
article by Tameka Sowder instructed, you simply need to " Put
Your Blinders On and Focus!" Do that now and 2005 will be
the most incredibly year of your life!

By the way....
If you're interested in the 22 page report that I considered
worth over $100, after reading about it, you can get a copy at:

How Taking an HGH Supplement Changed My Life
Copyright © 2004, Brad Bahr - All Rights reserved
http://www.hgh-facts.com

I finally bought the stuff. I couldn't resist anymore. After
hearing all of the great things HGH supplements could do, I
wanted to see if it was really true. I'd like to tell you
about my experience with HGH. Hopefully this will make it a
little easier for you to decide if it might be something
you'd want to try for yourself. What I'm talking about here
is non-prescription HGH releaser pills, not the injections
you need a doctor to give you. That's only for people who
have around $10,000 a year to blow.

Be careful though. I wasted a lot of money when I first got
started by buying the wrong kinds of HGH supplements. I went
through quite a few of them before I finally found one that
worked.

I had two reasons for wanting to take an HGH supplement. I'd
heard so much hype about it on the Internet and in the media
that I wanted once and for all to see if this stuff really
worked. Most importantly though, I was searching for
something that would cure my continual tiredness. I was
constantly tired. Maybe it was even what they call chronic
fatigue syndrome. I'm not a doctor, so I can't be sure.

Before I started taking HGH I was so exhausted all of the
time that I used to take a two hour nap every day after
work. I'd go to bed tired and wake up tired. I never quite
felt like a got a good night's sleep. My blood pressure was
so high I had to take prescription drugs just to try to keep
it out of the danger zone. I was putting on extra weight and
was slowing down more and more each day. That just made me
feel even more depressed.

I was a wreck. I felt old. I just didn't have any energy. I
suppose the junk food I ate didn't help and I really didn't
get much exercise either.

Every time my kids would ask me to take them to the park or
on a bike ride, my answer was always the same. "Sorry kids,
I'm just too tired".

Darn it, I was getting fed up with it. Why was I always so
tired all the time. I went to the doctor but that
didn't get me anywhere. I didn't want to keep letting my
family down all the time either. I just wanted to feel good
again and have the energy to spend quality time with my wife
and kids. It just wasn't fair to them. Every time they
wanted to do something or go somewhere I was always sleeping
on the couch.

Well I got so sick of it, I got on the Internet and started
searching for something that would make me feel good again.
I ran up my credit card buying stuff like coral calcium,
ginsing, vitamins, blue-green algae from Japan, you name it,
I bought it.

To make a long story shorter, I still didn't feel any
better. I was still tired and had no energy. Then I tried an
HGH supplement. The first few I tried didn't really do too
much except make my wallet lighter but the last one sure
did. Wow, did that make a difference! The website said it
might take a month or two to really start getting the
benefits of the product. But after the first week I already
started to feel better. I kept taking it and I kept feeling
better. I've been on it for a while now and I feel great. I
used to get the flu at least once or twice a year and
suffered from severe head and chest colds. I haven't had
either since I started taking HGH.

I just plain feel good again. Better mood, more positive
outlook, I feel fitter, it even improved my concentration.
In fact, I feel just like a kid again. My energy levels have
gone through the roof since I started taking this HGH
supplement. When I wake up I feel like I really got a great
night's sleep. I jump out of bed in the morning, get the
kids ready for school, put in a full day at work and then
come home and take the kids on a bike ride or a walk to the
park.

That, for me, is the biggest benefit of all. When my kids
come up to me and say, "can we go for a bike ride Dad?", and
I can say "Sure, let's go!". No more, "sorry kids, I'm just
to tired".

Now, I haven't had to take my blood pressure pills for
months. The last time I went to see my doctor my blood
pressure was 118 over 74. It hasn't been that low in ages.

My wife and friends all thought it was a big joke when I
bought my first bottle of HGH pills. They all reminded me of
several pieces of exercise equipment I had purchased in the
last few years that were gathering dust in the basement.
Well, no ones laughing now. They all notice how much extra
energy I have now. My weight has gone down and I'm feeling
really fit. My kids are happy too. Now they have a dad who's
not always sleeping on the couch.

My wife, who won't even take vitamins, even wanted to try it
when she found out how young it made skin look. I'm a guy,
so I wasn't really going for the young looking skin stuff,
but oh well, If it makes the wife happy, it makes me happy
too. A little side note: My buddy bought a bottle for his
wife and she said how nice it made her face and skin look.
Well, that's all it took. My wife just had to have it too. I
hope she doesn't read this part :)

Final note: While I must admit, at first I was very
skeptical about HGH supplements, I now take my HGH
supplement every single day without fail. I'm going to stick
with it. I've tried a lot of supplements that didn't do much
for me until I found the one HGH supplement that really
delivers what it promises. So now I recommend it to everyone
I know. In fact, I had so many people asking about it that I
created a website devoted to HGH facts and information.
It worked for me and for everyone I've recommended it to.

I never get tired of seeing the expression on their face
when they come back and say "Wow, that stuff you told me
about really works!".

P.S. Just in case you'd like some more information about HGH
in general and the name of the HGH supplement I personally
use, you can read more detailed information about the
product and see the scientific data I have collected on HGH
at my website: http://www.hgh-facts.com

To your good health,

Leadership Development And Jumping Out of Airships
Copyright © 2004 Brent Filson
The Filson Leadership Group, Inc
http://www.actionleadership.com/

A German silent film melodrama depicts an airship bombing
London during World War I. Lit up by searchlights and strafed
by fighters, the crippled airship loses altitude as the captain
frantically jettisons dispensable gear to lighten weight.
Eventually, the only weight left is human. So the captain
orders members of the crew overboard. A grisly scene unfolds
as the airmen, one by one, without parachutes, step up to the
hatch, salute the captain and the first mate, then jump to
their deaths. Lightened, the airship returns safely to Germany.

That scene is not a relic. It's happening in corporations
frequently these days, clearly not as fact but metaphor.
Companies, shot up in the cross fires of increasingly
competitive markets, must lighten their loads to get earnings'
growth buoyancy. The captains are jettisoning all but the
indispensable employees. Commonly, one of the first functions
to be ordered out is the training function in particular,
leadership training or leadership development.

Many company heads view such training as dispensable as the
airship crew in the melodrama.

Yet leadership isn't dispensable to business success. It's
absolutely indispensable. Good leaders are far more important
to the long term success of companies than good products. All
organizations that fail to get, keep, and develop good leaders
eventually founder. This isn't a secret. Most leaders know
this.

Here's the secret: The fact that leadership development is
viewed as dispensable is not the captain's making. It's the
crew's making. The blame lies with the people in charge of the
leadership development. They simply have not defined leadership
development in indispensable ways for results. Sure, they have
defined such development for training results but not for the
results that really count, business results.

And when training people focus on training results not
business results, they are always put at the front when the
superfluous are told to line up to leap.

What is leadership but results not training results,
business results. If leaders are not getting their business
results, they are not leading. Results can be defined in many
ways, productivity, operating efficiencies, sales growth, cost
reductions, etc., but leadership development has no real value
unless it is helping the leaders get those results.

Here are two simple ways to position your role to notably
increase your value to your company.

1. Define results.

Forget about training results. Forget about training
objectives. They're dispensable gear. Throw them
overboard. What are the business results of the leaders
you are developing? If you are dealing with people in
manufacturing, then focus on having your development
programs help improve operating efficiencies. If you
have sales people in those programs, focus on their
getting increased sales results within a certain time
after they complete your program. Whoever has signed
up for your programs, challenge them to use the tools
you give them to get results short and long term.

For instance, at the beginning of your programs, ask
participants, "What results do you have to get? And
what are the most important challenges you have in
     getting them?"

Then bring them the tools to help them get those results.
What they learn is worthless unless it is tied to what is
most valuable in their jobs and careers. It's worse than
worthless, it's a downright stumbling block since that
learning demands that they spend their time away from
     pursuing their real job objectives.

2. Measure those results.

There is no value in business without measurements.
Trainers who ignore this truth are put in the line before
the open hatch when the company starts going down. Those
trainers typically show their value by demonstrating the
     cost effectiveness of their programs.

Cost effective, baloney! I don't know of any organization
where "cost effective" ultimately doesn't mean "cheap."
Cost effectiveness is the worst way to position leadership
development programs. Cost effective programs are the least
valuable programs of all. Once we start defining our
programs by how cheap they are, we show that we don't
understand leadership or development and so cheapen our
     value to the company.

Don't make leadership programs inexpensive. Make them
expensive! ...expensive to the company if those programs
are not instituted. We can only show their true importance
by demonstrating the hard, measured, business-focused
results participants achieve after taking the programs.

At the end of your sessions, have participants write a
"value received" letter in which they detail the hard measured
results that they intend to get when they use your leadership
tools.

Follow up 35 days later to insure they have gotten those
results or are about to get them.

If participants in a leadership course don't receive an
R.O. I. that is at least five to ten times greater than the
investment they made in that course, give them their money
back. And why not? If they can't get big increases in their
hard, measured results, it's the course's fault. It hasn't
helped them develop as leaders. Without results, leadership
has no meaning.

Leadership development is too important to be demeaned by
having it fulfill training objectives. Enhance its importance
by having it fulfill business objectives. In doing so, we will
change the scenario on our metaphorical airship. Instead of
ordering the crew out, the captain will say, "We can't afford
to lose this crew member. Stay here! First mate, jump!"

Turn your Business’ New Year Resolutions in PR Revolutions

Cherry Communications

As eyes look forward to a new business year, many small business
owners and entrepreneurs are hoping that this upcoming year will
be the one that catapults them into success. But according to
Shannon Cherry, APR, businesses often overlook a key element
when making their business plans and resolutions.

“Most new businesses fail within three years – and it’s often
due to the fact that many business owners think that simply
hanging up an OPEN sign and placing an ad in the yellow pages
will attract customers,” says Cherry, president of Cherry
Communications (http://www.cherrycommunications.com), a public
relations and marketing firm which helps small businesses,
consultants and entrepreneurs to be heard. “What it takes is a
marketing strategy that’s effective – and in the case of many
small business owners – on a limited budget. They need public
relations to turn the resolutions into revolutions.”

She says public relations is one of the most cost-effective
methods of marketing available today. “Besides the fact that
it’s low cost or no cost, public relations can help establish
your credibility. It can position you as the revolutionary
leader and expert in your field.”

Cherry suggests including your public relations efforts as part
of a year-long, strategic business plan. “As you’re looking
toward what you’re going to accomplish in the future, make sure
you incorporate different public relations efforts as part of
your complete plan,” she says. “That way you’ll be sure to
schedule it in, just like any other business task.”

Cherry offers some low-cost public relations strategies to help
revolutionize small businesses:

1) Write articles. “Articles don’t have to be long; they just
need to be informative,” says Cherry. “Submitting online,
as well as offline, provides a good chance to get your name
    in print at no cost.”

2) Write press releases. “Reporters everywhere are looking for
stories, and a press release gives them the information to
write that story,” she says. “Just make sure it’s newsworthy,
    not just an advertisement.”

3) Write a newsletter. Cherry stress a newsletter should contain
content valuable to your target market, as well as promote
    your products and services.

4) Use your business cards. “Think of your business card as a
mini billboard and start handing them out everywhere,”
explains Cherry. “Include them in all your correspondence
and put them in places that they'll be seen.”

5) Start Speaking. “Speaking in front of an audience usually
makes you an expert. People like to buy from experts,” she
says. “Speaking is free, and it’s just like making a sales
call to many people at one time.”

Cherry says successful companies make public relations a
priority. “Whether selling direct, through distribution channels
or via e-commerce, a successful company must achieve and maintain
a strong market presence through a continuous and effective
public relations program.”

Why Litigation Is Nothing More Than A Business Tool - 26 Unbreakable Rules of
Litigation!
Copyright © 2004 Daniel S. Peña, Sr
Dan Pena.com
http://www.danpena.com/docs/products.php

From Bill Gates at the end of the last century to John
D. Rockefeller at the end of the previous century;
from Rick Scott, founder of Columbia Health Care, to
AT&T: from Richard Branson and British Airlines to Dan
Peña and The Financial Times; from government,
banking, insurance and every other facet of world
commerce - to grow geometrically and stay around,
litigation must be (prudently) used and mastered.

I will, as briefly as I can, memorialize the salient
points of using litigation as a business tool.

Now before I start, I want it on the record, some 50%
of my 30-year track record of litigation has had
nothing to do with winning money, i.e., many lawsuits
have been over principle, some were to right a heinous
wrong such as slanderous remarks made about me; and
some were because an entity just needed a good
comeuppance and nobody else would carry the flag into
battle.

I, like Don Quixote, have fought many a windmill.

As you've heard me speak and write about, when
building your "Dream Team," you want Big Five
accountants and a large national or international firm
of lawyers - the best representation you can't afford!

Unlike the success-oriented fees I coach you to use
when facilitating transactions, no law firm will
litigate initially on this basis.

Perhaps if your case is especially strong, they will
do it on a contingency basis. Unfortunately, you will
be using, from time-to-time, litigation as a
positioning tool and your case may not be something
you can seriously leverage.

A year or two ago, being left with a pig-in-a-poke, I
had to litigate a case having specious facts at best
to support my desired outcome. Fortunately, our (my)
apparent lust for litigation was stronger than their
desire to fight a hard fight, so a reasonably good
settlement was finally arrived at.

Of course, during this process my good lawyers
counseled us, advising our case needed to be much
stronger, etc. Even with great lawyers, it is their
job to tell you the downside risks. Again, what
happens is you are often scared from pursuing your
case.

Good lawyers win so-so lawsuits. Great lawyers can win
lawsuits in which you have little or no chance to win.

Three of my favorite litigators over the years are
Steve Susman and Cyrus Marter IV of Susman Godfrey in
Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles and Seattle and Tim
Harris of Charleston Revich & Williams in Los Angeles.
All three have dug me out of some pretty big black
holes.

I've dealt with them 10 and 20 years respectively.
They are worth every penny they charge!

Our judicial system works, but we grow up being afraid
of it. It's way out of our comfort zone so we preclude
ourselves from benefitting from it. Normally the cost
associated with it keeps us from using it.

In fact, I'm currently embroiled in litigation where
the ancillary players to the litigation have rights
which are being severely violated. A large group of
people could bring great pressure to bear, but they're
afraid because of previous bad experiences. They could
get what they deserve but aren't pursuing their best
interests.

There are lawyers who take on cases for humanitarian
reasons, if the case warrants, in business as well,
i.e., big major corporations taking advantage of the
system because of their size alone.

Why do you want to initiate the lawsuit so you are the
plaintiff? As the plaintiff, you pick where and when
the lawsuit is fought and probably ultimately
adjudicated.

This can be a huge advantage. And secondly, the
plaintiff is allowed two closing arguments, meaning
you (your lawyer) gets to address the judge and/or
jury once and then again after the defendants' closing
argument. This can also be very important.

It's a closed world of top litigators. Virtually all
big law firms have good to super-good lawyers. All big
law firms don't have great litigators. You don't
always need a great lawyer, but sometime if you grow
geometrically, you will.

Like any other project management, litigation must be
managed. Unfortunately, like speech-giving, you become
a great litigant by going through a learning curve.

I don't mean you have to get involved in losing
efforts (like making bad speeches so after some time
you make good speeches) to get in a position to win in
court. Large law firms will allow you to get ahead of
the learning curve.

The Quantum Leap methodology talks ad nauseam about
following your dreams. Life without dreams is like a
bird with a broken wing - it can't fly. I wrote this
newsletter because sometimes you'll need litigation to
follow your dream.

Go out and kick some butt, and don't let conventional
wisdom keep you from achieving your dream.

Conventional wisdom says Don't Litigate.

All high-performance people and the great
organizations of the last one hundred years did and do
litigate as I write this letter.

Don't litigate frivolously - but don't be afraid to
either.

To Your Quantum Leap,
Daniel S. Peña, Sr.

How to watch someone else's laptop screen
   - with your eyes closed!

So there you are on a long flight tapping away on your
laptop computer keyboard. You glance at the guy in the
seat next to you and see that he has cranked his seat
back and has his eyes closed so you ignore him.

But what you don't know is - your seat mate is
carefully watching your laptop screen even though his
  eyes are closed!

How can you pull off this seemingly magical trick?
First, practice closing your left eye while leaving
  your right eye half open.

Then recline your seat back a bit. If you carefully
rotate your head slightly to the left you'll be
able to see your target's laptop screen with your
  right eye.

Should your target look your way, he will see your
closed left eye and your reclined seat and will assume
that you're either sleeping or resting with your
eyes closed. From his position he won't be able to
see your open right eye. This will leave him feeling
relaxed and free to use their laptop in any way he
  chooses.

If you want to go all the way with this tactic,
you can go to an optometrist and have them make up
a pair of special glasses for you with the focal
length tuned to the exact distance of the laptop
  screen. (approximately five feet)

If you fear such slick tactics might be used against
you, you might consider installing a "filter" on your
laptop. Several are available that make it almost
impossible for anyone else to view your screen.

One popular manufacturer makes a filter that's
made up of hundreds of little black straws about a
half inch long. When you view your screen you're
actually looking down these little straws.

In this way the viewing angle of your screen is
severly restricted. Should anyone attempt to view
your laptop screen from either side of you, they
will see only a pitch black screen.

Starting Your Own Blog.
Copyright © 2004 John Taylor
How To Get Paid To Blog
http://www.Blog4Cash.com

I was sitting in my local Internet Cafe yesterday, I like to get
away from my "home office" from time to time and it's a great
place to go for a cup of Espresso and to meet interesting people.
The rather attractive lady sitting next to me was typing away
furiously and, when she had finished, I asked her what she was
writing - I'm interested in learning how other people use the
Internet... some people call that being nosey!

It turns out she was a "Blogger" and she was updating her web
site through a web browser. She was really interested in
vegetarian cookery and she was adding a new restaurant review
to her blog.

If you spend any time at all online these days you simply can't
avoid reading something about blogs, they are becoming
increasingly more popular; and they are a great way of building
an online presence without the need for any technical knowledge.
A blog is an abbreviation of the term 'web log' which is a
relatively simple content management system.

Quite a few years ago, web surfers began collecting information
and interesting links that they encountered during their online
travels. As time passed they started to create logs of the
information that they collected and they soon started to develop
their own web logs. These web logs enabled them to update the
information and links as often as they wished.

Blogs are more permanent than posts to an online forum or to a
discussion list, they are much more dynamic than the traditional
style home pages. They are also more personal than standard
journaling, and definitely more public than diaries. A blog is
often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what
is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary site. So, there
are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.

There are a few common characteristics of a blog, but there may
be slight variations within the classification. Some blogs
provide succinct descriptions of links within the chosen theme of
the blog. Some others contain commentary and links to the news of
the day. A few are endless stream of blurts about the writer’s
day. Others are - political blogs, intellectual blogs, some are
hilarious and some topic driven. They are all - Weblogs.

As mentioned earlier, blogs are posts that are short, informal
and sometimes deeply personal no matter what the topic of
discussion is. They can be characterized by their conversational
tone.

If a person has a web presence but is disappointed with static
homepage - if an elegant treatment of posts on a global platform
is what they want, then ‘blogging’ provides an ideal platform.
They may also consider blogging if they are seeking feedback from
their chosen audience.

Weblogs are definitely the mavericks of the online world. Two
of their greatest strengths are their ability to filter and
disseminate information to a widely dispersed audience, and their
position outside the mainstream of mass media.

There are many different options available to the new and
seasoned blogger alike. Some blog scripts are available for you
to install on your own domain and these require at least a basic
understanding of FTP and HTML. There are many hosted blog
services available some free and some paid. If you are serious
about blogging then I would strongly recommend that you use the
best system that you can afford and that meets your needs.

I personally have used the "Moveable Type" stand-alone script and
although quite complex to install, I found it very easy to use.
My recommended choice of hosted blogging service would have to be
the Blog4Cash.com system that includes a wide variety of high
quality features and has a built in two tier affiliate scheme
that enables you to generate a recurring income from all your
referrals!

Ask Dan a Question
http://www.askdanaquestion.com

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Question: If you were starting out and had no
references or a substantial resume, how would you go
about finding paying customers for your services?

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

To answer your question, I'll assume you're a junior
copywriter or marketing consultant.

When I first started out and didn't know a soul, I'd
open the yellow pages and cold-call the business
owners. I'd go to networking events and try to get
business. (Sucks!)

Sometimes I'd do a little "switchcraft" and call the
companies who sent me direct mail letters.

Before I had a track record, I wrote a lot on a
results-oriented basis. This is also know as a "sink
or swim" or "thrive or starve" approach.

I'd write an ad or sales letter for a client, with the
guarantee that if the ad didn't work, I didn't get
paid. If the ad did work, I'd receive a flat fee.

Once I'd proven myself as a credible,
conversion-oriented copywriter, I switched to
requesting compensation based on a percentage of the
sales. Ultimately, I changed to a flat fee, plus a
percentage.

It wasn't easy. It's a good thing that "thin is in"
because I've been through a lot of lean and hungry
months. I got ripped off so many times I can't even
count them. Understand... I'm not saying this is what
you should do, but that's what I DID.

In the beginning, you have to be pretty much shameless
and willing to check your ego at the door. Be prepared
to take on any kind of job for any kind of price. You
want to make yourself damn busy. You want the law of
supply and demand to work in your favor.

Your goal is to build up a portfolio of satisfied
clients as quickly as humanly possible.

If it soothes your wounded ego, think of the process
as "earning as you're learning." By taking a wide
variety of jobs, you'll not only hone your skills a
hell a lot faster, you'll also build up a reputation
as someone who's "earned his chops."

And don't forget to collect testimonials.

Success breeds success.

Ultimately, just like me, when you're in demand,
you'll be able to name your own price and do business
on your own terms. If a prospect has a problem with
how much you charge, you don't need to have a problem
with them.

All you have to say is, NEXT!"

Don't worry, if you're good at what you do, you don't
have to "settle for less." (If you're not good at
what you do, and aren't striving to make yourself
better, you have no business being in business.)

Here's another plus about providing good value: your
clients will tell other people about you. You won't
have to go looking for clients; clients will come
looking for you. That's the position you want to be
in…at the head of the "receiving line," picking and
choosing your clients.

Your skills are in demand. The business world needs
good copywriters. And good copywriters are rare. So
the pro's in this profession are always in high demand.

As a marketing consultant or copywriter, you're better
off if you don't have to engage in actively persuading
prospects to hire you. You're in a much more powerful
position, of course, if they come to you.

An excellent way to make yourself the "go-to" writer
that everyone wants is to establish yourself as an
expert. Writing a book, creating a website and
speaking at events are all excellent ways to gain a
reputation as "Miss Information" or "Mr. Know-It-All."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Question: What's an easy way to deal with lingering
doubts and questions about an offer with the best ways
to create urgency and compel people to act now?

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As any good copywriter or marketer will tell you,
overcoming resistance is essential to closing a sale.
And as any successful copywriter or marketer may keep
secret, there are essentially 5 foolproof ways to
create a sense of urgency.

1) Limited Time

Time waits for no man, and neither should your offer.
Set a time limit to send a clear message that says,
"You must act NOW." Be sure to state a very specific
deadline. Dont say "This offer will expire soon."

Do say, "This offer will expire on July 20, 2004" or
"This offer will expire at midnight on June 12th" or
"This offer will expire in 10 days." I think you know
what I mean.

2) Limited Quantity

What do diamonds, vintage wine, and a triple-play in
baseball have in common? They're valuable because
they exist in limited quantity. Give your "Widget" the
same value by advertising that only a limited number
of these Widgets were produced. Or say that only a
limited number of these Widgets will be sold.

Again, be very specific. The above example should
really read: "Only 341 of these Widgets will be sold
at this special 38%-off discount price."

For a double-whammy, add a little financial incentive
to your limited quantity offer: "Only a limited
number of these Widgets will be sold at THIS special
price" or "Only a limited number of these FREE BONUES
will be given out."

3) Exclusivity

People want to feel special and like they're getting
something that other people aren't. Thats why the
"golf club members only" deal work so well...

4) Superiority

I've got an ego, you've got an ego, and you can bet
your sales message that your prospect has an ego.
Appeal to it with offers that say, "This deal is ONLY
for action takers." and "This deal is ONLY for
successful people."

5) Popularity

People like things that are popular and they trust
what other people like... even if they don't know
those people. It's the reason that restaurateurs
always put customers in the front windows...you don't
want a prospective diner looking in on a bunch of
empty seats...

People like to be part of the "popular crowd" and they
also don't want to experience the pain of being on the
outside looking in. So stir up the pain and remind
your visitors what they will miss out or lose if they
dont act now.

These two tactics are a one-two punch that will knock
consumers right out of their lethargy and right into
your offer.

Would you like to be sure that your personal goals are
consistent with your business goals? (Yes) (No)

You might have certain personal goals that are, or become,
divergent to your business goals.

For instance, let's say that you set clear personal goals to
compete in the Iron Man Triathlon in Hawaii. Obviously, to
compete in an arduous event like this you not only have to train
rigorously, but you also have to qualify by competing in a
number of prior triathlons, placing high enough in these events
to earn a bid fro the Iron Man in Hawaii.

At the same time, let's say you are married with two kids, and
you have set some very aggressive professional goals, which
include starting your own business and making it profitable
within a 2-3 year time horizon.

Given the fact that the average new entrepreneur puts in 60-70
hours per week and you have family responsibilities to consider,
chances are you will experience major goal conflicts in your
life when it comes to competing in triathlons. Something has to
give.

Do you give up your sports goals, your business goals, or your
family?

These are tough decisions.

They all boil down to making sure that your personal and
professional goals are compatible.

The process of setting synchronous personal and business goals
speaks to the importance of setting a clear and workable life
strategy. The process of creating a life strategy includes the
homogenization over time of personal and business goals. Unless
you unify your goals there will be goal conflict, which fosters
turmoil in your life.

For the best results, you need to start by creating a life
strategy that makes sense to you in terms of satisfying all of
your personal and professional aspirations, leaving quality time
for your family, and fitting everything into a reasonable time
schedule.

In general, people today work too hard, play too hard, and
neglect their health and rest time. It is truly a challenge to
fit everything in and lead a balanced life.

At the end of the day, at the end of a career, if all you have
to show for all of your hard work and hectic schedule is a large
net worth while your family never saw you, and your health
suffered terribly because you drove yourself too hard, you have
to ask yourself, "Was it really worth it?" Take it from expert
workaholics, balance your life, plan your life, and enjoy your
life -you can take happiness and love with you, money you
cannot.

Keep in mind, there are always trade-offs in this process of
goal setting and life strategy building. It is important that
you weigh all your options in order to make choices that support
a healthy and happy life for you and your family.

Yes, it may take a change in mind-set, career, lifestyle, or
even location to balance your life, still be productive, and
achieve the goals that you want to achieve.

Keeping Your Own Money – NOT Handing It Over To The Taxman.
Copyright © 2004 Leo Rogers
Advent Tax Freedom
http://www.advent-taxfreedom.com

Most people trying to make a crust online (or offline for that
matter) are so focused on doing just that, they ignore taking
simple steps to ensure that they hang on to just as much of
it as they can. Instead, they hand over large lumps of their
hard-earned money in tax, usually in one of two mistaken
beliefs. Either:

   1. It’s a good thing, a sure sign of a civilised society. Or,
   2. If they don’t, the Feds will “get them”, fining them,
expropriating their assets, maybe even jailing them.

I’d respectfully suggest that those two “reasons” are mutually
exclusive. Visiting penal sanctions on citizens because they
decline to hand over their money to you could hardly be regarded
as the mark of a civilised society. In fact it might more
properly be regarded as the mark of a criminal one!

So how does this situation arise, and how can the thinking man
or woman avoid it?

Most e-mails I receive regarding business opportunities trumpet
the benefits of being an entrepreneur. Now the Shorter Oxford
English Dictionary defines “entrepreneur” as follows:

“A person who undertakes or controls a business and bears
the risk of profit or loss”.

Yes, that’s “risk”, “profit” and “loss”. All things that people
with their own businesses regard as being as inevitable as night
following day.

Interestingly, the SOED contains no definition of “rentseeker”.
Still, key the term in to Google and you’ll discover that it
refers to people who want to be paid to take your money for a
“service” that you would not yourself choose to pay for.

Now let’s just talk this one through:

1. They want to be paid. In practice, they don’t just wish to
be paid, but to enjoy substantial pension rights. All of
this is funded by the taxpayer.

2. In return for these payments, they undertake to extract
further sums of taxpayers’ money to provide what they
    describe as “services”.

3. Critically, taxpayers would not, either as individuals or
collectively, freely choose to pay for these services. If
they did, they would do so, in the marketplace.

4. The money is therefore taken by coercion.

5. They lack any concept whatever of risk (at least to
themselves) or of profit (to taxpayers). Loss, on the
other hand, is guaranteed to each and every taxpayer.

Now, in any other context, this process is known as “robbery”,
or, more subtly, “fraud”.

After all, it IS your money, right? Well not according to Uncle
Sam, or, depending where you’re based, your nearest friendly
local equivalent.

Governments seem to think that they’ve generally got a whole
lot better set of ideas about what to do with your money than
you might have yourself (despite all the evidence to the
contrary in front of everyone’s eyes). What they’ve particularly
got, however, is a set of excellent ideas for using your income
to pay their own salaries and pensions (final salary,
index-linked, performance-irrelevant). And these people are
known as rentseekers.

The legendary investor, Jim Rogers, writing in the Foreword to
“Financial Reckoning Day”, by Bill Bonner and Addison Wiggin,
had this to say:

“In America, if you have a job, you pay taxes. If you save
some money, you pay taxes on the interest. If you buy a
stock and get paid a dividend, you pay taxes. If you have
a capital gain, you pay taxes again. And when you die,
your estate pays taxes. If you live long enough to get
social security, they tax your social security income.
Remember: you paid taxes on all this money when you earned
it originally and yet they tax it again and again”.

Now wouldn’t it just be nice to avoid all of that?

Because it’s the simplest thing on earth, particularly if your
earnings are being generated in that weird nether land called
cyberspace, to use a set of perfectly legal arrangements to
process your money FREE OF TAX.

In other words, you set yourself up a company, a bank account,
and a business address somewhere no predatory taxman stalks!
That is, OFFSHORE. There are quite a large number of these
jurisdictions, and there is not a single Fortune 500 company
that doesn’t use them. I kinda think that tells you a lot.

Once it’s all in place it works just like any other company
arrangement – you just don’t pay any tax!

Now no-one’s suggesting that it costs nothing to set up these
arrangements, and it’s true it’s not going to figure high in
your priorities if you’ve got a marketing budget of $10 and are
wondering how to pay the rent. But, assuming that you’re already
generating even reasonable income, it just has to make sense to
look into this.

After all, even if you’re not interested in saving yourself a
whole lot of money, there’s another reason you might wish to
avoid all of this. I’ll leave you with another quote, this time
from Charles Adams, in “For Good And Evil: The Impact Of Taxes
On Modern Civilisation”:

“Tax haven ‘refugees’ report that they are tired of fighting
the taxman. They have had enough of audits, year in and year
out, of having their banking and accounting records picked
over and questioned. They are tired of having their privacy
totally destroyed by inquisitional tax agents. They are
tired of appeals, big fees for tax professionals, and
endless tax litigation. Many complain that the soak-the-rich
philosophy of their homelands was not as intolerable as the
harassment and scorn they receive from revenue bureaucrats”.

Personally, I can relate to that...

Are You Sabotaging Your Career?
Copyright © 2004 Brent Filson
The Filson Leadership Group, Inc.
http://www.actionleadership.com/

My experience working with thousands of leaders world wide for
the past two decades teaches me that most leaders are screwing
up their careers.

On a daily basis, these leaders are getting the wrong results
or the right results in the wrong ways.

Interestingly, they themselves are choosing to fail. They’re
actively sabotaging their own careers.

Leaders commit this sabotage for a simple reason: They make the
fatal mistake of choosing to communicate with presentations and
speeches -- not leadership talks.

In terms of boosting one’s career, the difference between the
two methods of leadership communication is the difference
between lightning and the lightning bug.

Speeches/presentations primarily communicate information.
Leadership talks, on the other hand, not only communicate
information, they do more: They establish a deep, human
emotional connection with the audience.

Why is the later connection necessary in leadership?

Look at it this way: Leaders do nothing more important than get
results. There are generally two ways that leaders get results:
They can order people to go from point A to point B; or they can
have people WANT TO go from A to B.

Clearly, leaders who can instill “want to” in people, who
motivate those people, are much more effective than leaders
who can’t or won’t.

And the best way to instill “want to” is not simply to relate
to people as if they are information receptacles but to relate
to them on a deep, human, emotional way.

And you do it with leadership talks.

Here are a few examples of leadership talks.

  * When Churchill said, “We will fight on the beaches ... “
    That was a leadership talk.

  * When Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for
you ... “ that was a leadership talk.

  * When Reagan said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
    That was a leadership talk.

  * You can come up with a lot of examples too. Go back to
those moments when the words of a leader inspired people
to take ardent action, and you’ve probably put your finger
    on an authentic leadership talk.

  * Mind you, I’m not just talking about great leaders of
history. I’m also talking about the leaders in your
organizations. After all, leaders speak 15 to 20 times
a day: everything from formal speeches to informal chats.
When those interactions are leadership talks, not just
speeches or presentations, the effectiveness of those
    leaders is dramatically increased.

  * How do we put together leadership talks? It’s not easy.
Mastering leadership talks takes a rigorous application of
many specific processes. As Clement Atlee said of that
great master of leadership talks, Winston Churchill, “Winston
spent the best years of his life preparing his impromptu
    talks.”

  * Churchill, Kennedy, Reagan and others who were masters at
giving leadership talks didn’t actually call their
communications “leadership talks”, but they must have been
conscious to some degree of the processes one must employ
in putting a leadership talk together.

Here’s how to start. If you plan to give a leadership talk,
there are three questions you should ask. If you answer “no” to
any one of those questions, you can’t give one. You may be able
to give a speech or presentation, but certainly not a leadership
talk.

(1) DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE AUDIENCE NEEDS?

Winston Churchill said, “We must face the facts or they’ll stab
us in the back.”

When you are trying to motivate people, the real facts are THEIR
facts, their reality.

Their reality is composed of their needs. In many cases, their
needs have nothing to do with your needs.

Most leaders don’t get this. They think that their own needs,
their organization’s needs, are reality. That’s okay if you’re
into ordering. As an order leader, you only need work with your
reality. You simply have to tell people to get the job done.
You don’t have to know where they’re coming from. But if you
want to motivate them, you must work within their reality, not
yours.

I call it “playing the game in the people’s home park”. There
is no other way to motivate them consistently. If you insist
on playing the game in your park, you’ll be disappointed in
the motivational outcome.

(2) CAN YOU BRING DEEP BELIEF TO WHAT YOU’RE SAYING?

Nobody wants to follow a leader who doesn’t believe the job can
get done. If you can’t feel it, they won’t do it.

But though you yourself must “want to” when it comes to the
challenge you face, your motivation isn’t the point. It’s
simply a given. If you’re not motivated, you shouldn’t be
leading.

Here’s the point: Can you TRANSFER your motivation to the people
so they become as motivated as you are?

I call it THE MOTIVATIONAL TRANSFER, and it is one of the least
understood and most important leadership determinants of all.

There are three ways you can make the transfer happen.

  * CONVEY INFORMATION. Often, this is enough to get people
motivated. For instance, many people have quit smoking
because of information on the harmful effects of the habit.

  * MAKE SENSE. To be motivated, people must understand the
rationality behind your challenge. Re: smoking: People have
been motivated to quit because the information makes sense.

  * TRANSMIT EXPERIENCE. This entails having the leader’s
experience become the people’s experience. This can be the
most effective method of all, for when the speaker’s
experience becomes the audience’s experience, a deep sharing
of emotions and ideas, a communing, can take place.

There are plenty of presentation and speech courses devoted to
the first two methods, so I won’t talk about those.

Here’s a few thoughts on the third method. Generally speaking,
humans learn in two ways: by acquiring intellectual understanding
and through experience. In our schooling, the former
predominates, but it is the latter which is most powerful in
terms of inducing a deep sharing of emotions and ideas; for our
experiences, which can be life’s teachings, often lead us to
profound awareness and purposeful action.

Look back at your schooling. Was it your book learning or your
experiences, your interactions with teachers and students, that
you remember most? In most cases, your experiences made the
most telling impressions upon you.

To transfer your motivation to others, use what I call my
“defining moment” technique, which I describe fully in my
book, DEFINING MOMENT: MOTIVATING PEOPLE TO TAKE ACTION.

In brief, the technique is this: Put into sharp focus a
particular experience of yours then communicate that focused
experience to the people by describing the physical facts that
gave you the emotion.

Now, here’s the secret to the defining moment. That experience
of yours must provide a lesson and that lesson is a solution to
the needs of the people. Otherwise, they’ll think you’re just
talking about yourself.

For the defining moment to work (i.e., for it to transfer your
motivation to them), the experience must be about them. The
experience happened to you, of course. But that experience
becomes their experience when the lesson it communicates is a
solution to their needs.

(3) CAN YOU HAVE THE AUDIENCE TAKE RIGHT ACTION?

Results don’t happen unless people take action. After all,
it’s not what you say that’s important in your leadership
communications, it’s what the people do after you have had
your say.

Yet the vast majority of leaders don’t have a clue as to what
action truly is.

They get people taking the wrong action at the wrong time in
the wrong way for the wrong results.

A key reason for this failure is they don’t know how to deliver
the all-important “leadership talk Call-to-action”.

“Call” comes from an Old English word meaning "to shout." A
Call-to-Action is a "shout for action." Implicit in the concept
is urgency and forcefulness. But most leaders don’t deliver the
most effective Calls-to-action because they make three errors
regarding it.

First, they err by mistaking the Call-to-Action as an order.
Within the context of The Leadership Talk, a Call-to-action is
not an order. Leave the order for the order leader.

Second, leaders err by mistaking the Call as theirs to give.
The best Call-to-action is not the leader's to give. It's the
people’s to give. It's the people’s to give to themselves. A
true Call-to-action prompts people to motivate themselves to
take action.

The most effective Call-to-action then is not from the leader
to the people but from the people to the people themselves!

Third, they error by not priming their Call. There are two
parts to the Call-to-Action, the primer and the Call itself.
Most leaders omit the all-important primer.

The primer sets up the Call, which is to prompt people to
motivate themselves to take action. You yourself control the
primer. The people control the Call.

The primer/Call is critical because every leadership
communication situation is in essence a problem situation.
There is the problem the leader has. And there is the problem
the people have. In many cases, they are two different
problems. But leaders get into trouble regarding the
Call-to-action when they think it’s only one problem, mainly
theirs.

For instance, a leader might be talking about the organization
needing to be more productive. So, the leader talks
PRODUCTIVITY.

On the other hand, the people, hearing PRODUCTIVITY, think,
YOU’RE GOING TO GIVE ME MORE WORK!

If the leader thinks that productivity is the people’s problem
and ignores the “more work” aspect, h/she’s Call-to-action will
probably be a bust, resulting in the people avoiding committed
action.

Let’s apply the primer/Call dynamic to the productivity case.
The leader talks PRODUCTIVITY: but this time uses a PRIMER.
The primer’s purpose is to establish a “critical confluence”
– the union of your problem with the problem of the people.

In this case, the leader creates a critical confluence by
couching productivity within the framework of MORE MEANINGFUL
WORK.

The primer may be: LET’S GET TOGETHER AND SEE IF YOU CAN COME
UP WITH AN ACTION PLAN THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE PRODUCTIVITY
GAINS YOU IDENTIFY AND EXECUTE WILL ENABLE YOU TO WORK AT
WHAT’S REALLY MEANINGFUL TO YOU.

Note what we’ve done: The primer is LET’S GET TOGETHER AND SEE
IF YOU CAN COME UP WITH AN ACTION PLAN.

The actual Call is from the people to themselves: LET’S INCREASE
PRODUCTIVITY BY WORKING AT WHAT’S MEANINGFUL.

With that Call, the leader moves from just getting average
results (YOU MUST BE MORE PRODUCTIVE: i.e., you’re going to
solve MY problem) to getting great results (YOU COME UP WITH
WAYS TO TIE PRODUCTIVITY INTO MEANINGFUL WORK: i.e., you’re
also going to solve your problem.)

So, here’s what the leadership talk Call-to-action is truly
about: It’s not an order; it’s best manifested when the people
give themselves the Call; and it is always primed by your
creating the “critical confluence” -- they’ll be solving their
problem as well as yours.

The vast majority of leaders I’ve worked with are hampering their
careers for one simple reason: They’re giving presentations and
speeches -- not leadership talks.

You have a great opportunity to turbo charge your career by
recognizing the power of leadership talks. Before you give a
leadership talk, ask three basic questions. Do you know what
the people need? Can you bring deep belief to what you’re
saying? Can you have the people take the right take action?

If you say “no” to any one of those questions you cannot give a
leadership talk. But the questions aren’t meant to be stumbling
blocks to your leadership but stepping stones. If you answer
“no”, work on the questions until you can say, “yes”. In that
way, you’ll start getting the right results in the right way on
a consistent basis.

Cure Arthritis? Right!

Dealon Bracelets

Arthritis sufferers are daily bombarded with new, better, more
exciting treatments. Try Enbrel! Try Humira! Miracle drugs! Get
your NSAIDS! Get your DMARDS! Pump more chemicals into your
system. Side effects? What side effects? You have a choice;
accept the side effects or get sicker and sicker.

In order to allay our fears, the drug companies publish the
results of their clinical tests. This double blind study proved
that that lethal chemical reduced your swelling more than
another, equally lethal chemical.

Do they think they're playing with babies? Yes. That's exactly
what they think. Arthritis is such a horrible, debilitating
disease that we'll try anything to reduce the symptoms. And
that's exactly what these awful drugs do. They reduce the
symptoms, temporarily. As the symptoms creep back, your
rheumatologist increases the drug or experiments with other
lethal concoctions to reduce your swelling or pain. We're told
there's NO cure for arthritis. We're told that no one knows the
cause. Really! More that thirty years ago we sent men to play
golf on the moon. But we can't pin point even one cause for
this crippling disease?

It's time for a reality check. The drug companies will continue
to pump out really expensive chemicals, ostensibly helpful. Our
doctors will continue to serve up the concoctions fed to them
by the drug compaines. Unless we refuse to go along with this
travesty. We don't need a revolution. We don't even need to take
on our doctors or the drug companies. We only need to pool our
resources and conduct our own quiet experiments.

We need to experiment with our habits. Just take one aspect of
our life and alter it for one month. For example, are you a
heavy coffee drinker? I'm pretty well wired to the ceiling by
mid-day. Cut coffee from your diet for one month. Document any
changes to your system resulting from this. You may, of course,
suffer withdrawal symptoms but you may also experience a very
welcome reduction in arthritic pain and swelling.

That's just one suggestion. We have lots more. Feed-back from
our brave experimenters will eventually allow us to make real
recommendations. The revolution has started!

The Skinny on Muscle Imbalances - Restoring Order As A Means Of Eliminating Back
Pain
Copyright © 2004 Steve Preston
Back Pain Workout
http://www.backpainworkout.com

There are many causes of back pain. Injury, illness, herniated
disks and poor posture are just a few.

Muscle imbalances are one of the lesser side effects of improper
use, posture, strain and injury, and are commonly the cause of
the aches and pains associated with back pain. Unfortunately,
most doctors don't diagnose muscle imbalances until it is too
late.

Muscle Imbalances Defined

So what exactly is a muscle imbalance? A muscle imbalance is
exactly as it sounds, an 'imbalance' or inequality that exists
within the muscles. It occurs when two or more muscles in the
body that oppose each other are disproportionate.

An example of a common muscle imbalance occurs in the muscles
of the quadriceps and hamstrings. Most people work hard to
strengthen the front part of their leg but often skimp when it
comes to exercising the hamstring. A muscle imbalance in this
area of the leg can result in a 'popping' sound in the knee.
It can also result in back pain.

The single most common muscle imbalance leading to back pain
is disproportionate abdomen to back ratio. Think of it this
way... it's like a teeter totter that isn't balanced because
one end is shorter than the other. It will still work but not
optimally.

Not exercising the abdomen can lead to severe back pain because
the abdomen supports the back.

Biology of Muscles

It will help your understanding a bit if you have an idea of
how muscles work. Muscles are fibrous tissues that connect
to bones in the body, supporting the function of movement.
To facilitate movement muscles contract and then relax. So
a muscle gets shorter and then longer in response to movement.
A muscle imbalance may result in too much or too little
contracting or relaxing. Or, some muscles may get too strong
while others aren't strong enough and can reduce a persons'
stability.

Factors Contributing to Muscle Imbalances

One of the primary causes of muscle imbalances is poor posture.
If you sit for too long in a bad position or continually stand
with bad posture, your muscles adapt to your posture but in a
bad way resulting in imbalances.

Muscle imbalances can also result when you overuse a muscle.
If you are right handed for example and use a pull lever on the
job, and only pull with the right hand, the right hand/arm will
be stronger than the left which presents an imbalance.

The Benefits of Exercise

The good news is that exercise can help reduce and even
eliminate muscle imbalances. (If not careful however,
improper training can also lead to muscle imbalances).

You can exercise weaker muscles to catch them up to stronger
ones and work to correct imbalances and maintain overall
stability. You can assess whether or not opposing muscles are
out of balance by testing your lifting strength. Try lifting
your maximum on one side and then the other.

For example, if you can lift a 10 pound weight during a bicep
curl on the left side, but a 30 pound weight on the right, you
have a muscle imbalance. You should enlist the assistance of
a trainer when testing muscle imbalances. By working with a
trainer, you can develop a fitness program that not only
addresses muscle imbalances but improves overall tone and
strength. Usually a combination of strength training and
physical therapy or chiropractic therapy can be used to
correct muscle imbalances.

Prevention

Prevention is critical when it comes to muscle imbalances and
back pain. One of the best things you can to correct and
prevent future injury is seek out the help of a professional
trainer. A trainer can perform a physical evaluation and test
the relative muscle strength you have on each side of the body.
You can then work together to develop a strength training
program that provides overall strength and eliminates potential
problem areas.

The Five Most Important Powers Mid-life Women Must Use to Stay Young
Copyright © 2004 Barbara Morris R.Ph
Put Old on Hold
http://www.PutOldonHold.com

Gerontologists say that 70 percent of the aging process is
controllable with the right lifestyle choices. Anti-aging
expert Barbara Morris agrees, and has written a hot new book,
Put Old on Hold that explains how and why at 75, she feels and
functions as a 50-year old. She says, “It’s easy when you start
early to make anti-aging lifestyle and attitude adjustments. If
I can do it, others can do it too. The traditional aging process
that our society has adopted unnecessarily relegates middle age
people to early decline. There is a better way.”

In Put Old on Hold, Barbara Morris, who works full time as a
pharmacist, offers plenty of “what works for me” advice. Here
are five of her “power tools” for smart women (and men, when
they are not too stubborn to listen!) to help control the aging
process:

1. Take control.

Aging is inevitable but getting old is strictly an option.
Smart women don’t buy into society’s outdated model for
aging; instead, they constantly grow and improve, defying
convention and horse-and-buggy traditions and customs. If
you don’t take charge of your life, and you just let life
happen – life will just happen, and the result will be
typical, fossilized old age we accept as normal.

Bottom line: Smart women decide how old they are going to
be no matter how old they actually are.

2. Inventory and monitor youthful characteristics.

Observe old people. What is it about their “oldness” you
would like to avoid? How strong and flexible are you,
mentally and physically? Can you bend and touch your toes?
Can you walk up stairs without becoming out of breath? Keep
and improve what you can, while you can! Youth makes us
arrogant. Every day we see a seemingly unchanging image in
the mirror that slips away even as we admire what we see.

Bottom line: Smart women stay aware of what they have and
    work to keep it.

3. Plan your future.

By age 50, smart women have a plan for a healthy, productive
second life at retirement age because they know they will
probably live to 100 or more. In 1950, there were a mere
2,300 centenarians. Today, there are over 40,000. By 2050
close to a million people will be 100 or more.

Bottom line: Smart women maximize their future by protecting
and building their health, and visualizing their future.

4. Avoid the ultimate social disease.

No, it’s not sexually transmitted, it’s worse than that –
it’s self-inflicted, and it’s called retirement. Once you
internalize that you are no longer productive, that you no
longer have goals, decline sets in rapidly. Everything slows
    – movement, reaction time, thinking, walking, talking. The
mind and body go into a shutdown mode in preparation for the
    final event -- death.

Bottom line: Smart women rewire instead of retire.

5. Manage and fix correctable symptoms of aging.

For example, a slow shuffling gait, poor posture,
unattractive teeth, and uncorrected hearing loss. Invest
time, effort, and money where it matters: Buy a treadmill
and use it daily to maintain a youthful gait, cardiovascular
fitness and weight control. Get on an anti-aging diet, and
do weight-bearing exercise daily to stay strong and upright.

Bottom line: Smart women manage how they change with age.

Your Kidney Function Really Matters: A Lighter Look at What You Need to Know to
Prevent Adverse Drug Events
Copyright © 2004 Timothy McNamara, MD, MPH
Medication Advisor
http://www.medicationadvisor.com/

When you (or loved ones) are taking prescription or over the
counter medications...there is a lot you should be worried
about, and a lot that your pharmacist may not be telling you.

Most people are aware, for example, that several medications
taken together can sometimes cause harmful interactions. Most
also know that drug allergies can pose significant hazards.
(These are topics of other articles in this series). And, many
people know that young children, elderly adults, pregnant women,
nursing women, and severely debilitated people may all be at
higher risk for adverse drug events.

But what most people don't know is that a simple blood test can
be one of the most important pieces of information in determining
the correct dose of many medications...and the results of that
test are almost never available to your pharmacist, especially if
your pharmacist fills your prescription in a retail drugstore.
(And, that's a bummer.)

The test I'm talking about, of course, is the "serum creatinine
test" ("SEAR-'em cree-AT-tuh-neen tehst". It's a difficult
name to pronounce and a difficult test to understand...but one
that you NEED to know about if you or loved ones are taking
over-the-counter or prescription medications.)

A serum creatinine test gives a physician or pharmacist an
estimate of kidney function.

Serum creatinine is the "bean counter" of modern medicine...
letting folks know if the beans (the kidneys) are working as
well as they should.

Why is that important?

Well, kidney function is extremely important in determining the
correct doses of many medications since the kidneys (along with
the liver) assist in the removal of medications from the body.

Almost all medications (and/or their chemical by-products) are
either removed by the liver, by the kidneys, or, in many cases,
by both the kidneys and liver working together.

So, simply put, when the beans are not working well, many
medications will accumulate in the body and increase the risk
of drug side effects. And that's an even bigger bummer. (The
same is true for liver problems, and we will talk about that
in another article in this series.)

As a result, patients with reduced kidney function often need
LOWER doses of many medications.

So how does this all work?

Well, creatinine is a chemical that occurs and circulates
naturally in the human body. It is the result of normal protein
break-down. And, like many medications, creatinine is normally
removed from the blood by the beans. So, when the kidneys are
not working well, the level of creatinine circulating in the
bloodstream will start to go up...just like the blood level of
many medications.

Physicians and pharmacists are routinely and easily able to
determine how much creatinine is in the blood with the results
of a serum creatinine test. (This test is part of a very common
panel of blood tests. And, if the serum creatinine is high,
many drugs need to have a lower dose.) The normal value for
serum creatinine is about 0.4 to 1.5 mg/dl...but that can vary
a bit from lab to lab.

So remember: "kidneys no work...serum creatinine go UP".

Now, serum creatinine is not the best measure of kidney function
(there are other tests that are much more accurate), but results
of the serum creatinine test are usually the most readily
available...and cheapest...and are generally accurate enough for
most purposes...so serum creatinine is the de facto standard for
estimating kidney function...most of the time.

The gold standard test that doctors use for measuring kidney
function is called "creatinine clearance" (cree-AT-tuh-neeeen
CLEAR-uhhh-nce) However, not many patients get this particular
test because it is pretty darn inconvenient...and smelly. You
have to collect all of your urine for 24 hours and keep it in
the fridge. Not a lot of volunteers for this test...

Creatinine clearance is the volume of blood that the kidneys
clear of creatinine in a given amount of time (and it is
usually reported as milliliters per minute).

So, when kidney function decreases, creatinine clearance (the
amount of blood that the kidneys are successfully "cleaning")
also decreases.

So remember: "kidneys no work...creatinine clearance go DOWN".
(Note: this is easy to remember because it is the exact opposite
of what you were initially thinking, and the opposite of what
happens with serum creatinine. Most of medicine is like this.)

Now for the super tricky part just for those gunning for an A.
There is a way to "guestimate" creatinine clearance using serum
creatinine...isn't that neat. And, that's probably the best way
to determine renal function if a measured creatinine clearance
is not available.

What you do is run the serum creatinine value through a fancy
equation that will give you an estimated creatinine clearance,
which is itself an estimate of kidney function. (Estimates of
estimates of estimates...that's the kind of exacting science I
live for.)

For adults, that equation is the famous "Cockcroft-Gault
equation corrected for ideal body weight and gender"...the
equation everyone loves to hate. The Cockcroft-Gault equation
(presumably named after Drs. Cockcroft and Gault...or maybe
just Dr. Cockroft-Gault, or maybe Lara Croft), is generally
considered very reliable since it has never been well
validated in young patients, old patients, thin patients,
fat patients...basically all the patients it gets used on.
So go figure. Double bonus points if you can remember this:

For men, creatinine clearance =

    ((140- Age) * IBW) / (72 * SCr)

For women, creatinine clearance =

    ((140- Age) * IBW * 0.85) / (72 * SCr)

Where Age is in years, IBW is ideal body weight in kilograms,
and SCr is serum creatinine in mg/dl.

(For the algebraically-challenged and for anyone wanting help in
calculating the results of these complicated equations, please
visit this creatinine clearance calculator:
http://www.medicationadvisor.com/creatinine/creatinine.asp)

Now once you run this a few times, you'll find that creatinine
clearance for young healthy people is about 100 ml/min (we'll
just leave off the "ml/min" part from now on).

And, dead people have a creatinine clearance of about 0,
depending on how healthy they are.

Everyone else falls somewhere in between.

(Now someone in the back of the room is saying, "I just ran
this on myself and I have a creatinine clearance of 150". Well
aren't you special? In fact, young good-looking people can have
creatinine clearances of 130, 140, or more...but it doesn't do
a whole lot of good since 100 is perfectly acceptable. In fact,
it's just another case of overachiever overkill.)

Now, if someone has a creatinine clearance of 80, that means
that they have about...80% kidney function.

And, if someone has a creatinine clearance of 50, that means
that they have about...50% kidney function. (Are you following
all of this?)

Many drugs that are eliminated by the kidney will require
moderate dosage reductions once a patient's renal function
is in the 40-60 range.

Patients in the 20-40 range will typically require very large
reductions in dose.

And, patients who are in the "less than 20" range will often
need HUGE dosage reductions for medications eliminated by the
kidney (or better yet, they'll need to take medications that are
removed by some other organ altogether...if such an alternative
is available).

One last tidbit to consider. Renal function declines as people
age. No getting around that. But, the rate of decline is
different for different people. By the time you're 50 years
old, there is a reasonable chance you'll have moderate renal
function (or worse)...by the time you're 80, you'll almost
certainly have some important degree of renal impairment...
and you probably won't even know it or feel it.

Now that you know more renal physiology than you ever, EVER
wanted to know...let's get back to the main thread of this
article...medication safety.

If you (or a loved one) are at risk for having decreased kidney
function (and I'll tell you who such folks are in just a second),
you need to step up to the plate and get a handle on this issue
(because there is a very good chance that your physician and
pharmacist either didn't have renal function data or didn't
consider it when coming up with a dosage for you).

Here are the steps I recommend for everyone taking prescription
or over-the-counter medications:

1) For everyone: If you have access to the results of a recent
serum creatinine test (it is probably part of your annual
physical and you may have gotten a copy), memorize it or write
it down and then say to your physician or pharmacist when you
get a medication, "Say, I think my serum creatinine is about
    X. So, does this medication need any dosage adjustment in
order to be safe for me?

2) If you are in one of the following categories, you should
expect your physician and pharmacist to have considered
your renal function before dosing a medication:

    * known kidney disease;
    * age greater than 50;
    * history or heart attack, angina, stroke, or other artery
      blockages;
    * history of diabetes (any type);
    * history of high blood pressure;
    * prior exposure to chemotherapy drugs;
    * prior prolonged exposure to IV antibiotics;
    * frequent use of pain medications (especially non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs, but others as well).

So you might say to your physician or pharmacist, "Is this
drug removed by the kidney, because I have condition X that
could decrease kidney function and I just want to be safe."
If the drug is removed by the kidney, you might also ask the
physician or pharmacist to tell you what your serum creatinine
is...and if he or she does not have this information, a big
red flag should be going up in your head.

3) If you are not in one of the categories in question 2 and you
    don't have a serum creatinine available, don't worry. You're
probably safe. But you may want to ask your physician if
there is a serum creatinine in your chart and if so, what
    it is.

4) If you are on dialysis of any sort, serum creatinine is not
all that useful for dosing medications. Just make sure your
physician and pharmacist are aware that you are on dialysis
and perhaps ask, "Now is this the usual dose for someone on
    dialysis?"

These are some of the steps I hope you will consider the next
time you get a prescription or over-the-counter medication so
you can be sure that that you (or your loved one) are getting
the right dose.

Got stacks of audio tapes that need to be converted to a more
user-friendly format? Professional transcription services may
be the answer.

Professional transcriptionists can take standard or micro
cassette tapes and produce a typed version of the text in a
format that's clear, consistent and correct. They can create
transcripts of taped meetings, training sessions, seminars
and conventions, as well as dictated letters, reports and
manuscripts. Once the information is transcribed, you can
easily email, fax or post it to a Website.

Accuracy Is Essential

Transcribing actually covers a variety of services. It can
include whatever editing is necessary to make a report or
letter "flow". It can also include the tweaking sentence
syntax, adjusting paragraphs, removing redundancies, and
repairing general grammatical errors.

For some professions, a high degree of accuracy in transcripts
is crucial. For example, medical transcriptionists must
carefully listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and
other healthcare professionals and accurately transcribe them
into reports, correspondence and other administrative materials
that eventually become part of patients' permanent files. Their
ability to understand and correctly transcribe patient
assessments and treatments reduces the chance of patients
receiving ineffective or even harmful treatments and ultimately
ensures high quality patient care.

Accuracy in transcripts is equally as important in other fields.
In legal matters, it's essential because all testimony must be
rendered exactly as it's spoken. Likewise, police detectives
require precise transcripts of statements by suspects and
witnesses. In the corporate arena, letters, meetings and
training sessions must be properly transcribed for the sake
of effective education and communication.

Requirements For A Good Transcriptionist

Whether you need medical, legal or general transcribing for your
business, accurate transcribing requires a unique set of skills.
But if your staff lacks the expertise or time to transcribe
materials in house, an outside company can easily fill the void.

Working with an outside vendor offers a variety of cost-saving
benefits, including:

  · No cost of special equipment.
  · No hourly employee downtime. You pay only for production.
  · No Social Security, payroll or unemployment taxes.
  · No medical insurance benefits, paid vacations and sick leave

But before you run out and hire the first transcription company
available, make sure it has the skills to meet your needs. The
outsourcer you choose should be:

  · Well-versed in the English language
  · Knowledgeable of the rules of grammar
  · Familiar with your industry
  · Easily accessible for questions

5 Keys to Health

If you're anything like me, then you've got a certain picture in
your mind of what "holistic" is supposed to be. For me, it's
conjured up pictures of holy men, or shaman, doing a ritual dance
while chanting mantras, and rubbing "energy crystals" in an
effort to remove evil spirits from your life. It wasn't until I
started doing research for my new book, "5 Keys To Health: A
Holistic Approach" when I realized that my preconceptions
couldn't have been more further from the truth.

I had originally planned to write a book on fitness. I know
that's a pretty general term, but I intended it to be about how
one can achieve health through physical fitness. It wasn't going
to be anything fancy. It was going to be a guide for the busy
person, and how they can get fit, and stay that way while still
being able to live a busy lifestyle.

I’ve always been interested in health and fitness. As a matter of
fact, I think I’m in pretty good shape. I work out with weights
at least 3 days per week, and I engage in some sort of cardio-
vascular activity at least 2 days per week. I eat right; I
stretch after every work out. I don’t smoke or drink excessively.
I thought I was doing pretty well.

That is, until through the course of my research I came to
realize that there’s a lot more to being healthy than being
physically fit, and eating right. That’s when I ran into the word
"holistic." In the past, it’s always had a negative connotation
for me. I’ve always thought of it as something used by
metaphysical crackpots trying to sell snake-oil. As it turns out,
holistic is not what I thought it was.

The real meaning of holistic is looking at the whole system
rather than just concentrating on individual components. So, when
it comes to being healthy, it looks at every aspect of health
instead of just the physical. Do you realize that when we
consider health, we usually look to see if our diet is right, or
how often we exercise? There’s so much more to consider.

I found out that there are several aspects you must work on in
order to consider yourself truly healthy. Among them are the
obvious physical, but there’s also the mental and the spiritual
to consider. If any of these is deficient, it could have serious
repercussions in your life.

Ask yourself this, "Am I really healthy?"

Yes, you work out religiously. Yes, you eat chicken breasts, and
egg whites, and you take your vitamins, and do everything else a
"healthy" person is supposed to. But is there anything you’re
missing?

Let me ask you this: how often do work on relieving stress from
your life? How often do you work on building positive
relationships? How often do you seek to build spirituality in
your life?

These are just some of the aspects you must work on if you’re
searching for true, and total health. Holistic doesn’t have to
have a negative meaning. It can simply mean a philosophy of well-
being that considers the physical, mental and spiritual aspects
of life as being closely interconnected and balanced. I cover all
of these points, and several more in my book, "5 Keys To Health:
A Holistic Approach."

I show you how to apply the holistic approach to health without
any of the metaphysical mumbo jumbo. You can check it out at
http://5keystohealth.com.

Take it from me, a one-time skeptic. "Holistic" doesn’t have to
be a four-lettered word. It can be something positive that will
help you create a fuller, healthier life.

This article is intended to inform people with diabetes in
regards to their diabetic supplies. When I found out that my
sister was diagnosed with the disease I started to research more
and came across some useful information that might be helpful to
others.

Diabetes is the country's sixth leading cause of death by
disease. As you may know it is the leading cause of blindness,
kidney disease, heart disease and amputations. Diabetes claims
the lives of more than 193,000 Americans each year. Approximately
18.2 million Americans have diabetes, but one-third of those are
undiagnosed. And many people that do have diabetes pay for their
diabetes supplies. If you have insurance and live in the United
States, you may be eligible.

As of May 2004, forty-six states have some type of laws requiring
health insurance coverage to include treatment for diabetes. The
states not included are Alabama, Idaho, North Dakota and Ohio.

As of 2002, two states, Georgia and Wisconsin passed an expansion
of current coverage requirements. In 2003 Hawaii adopted a
resolution to clarify its mandate of diabetes education coverage.
No new laws were passed during the first four months of 2004.

About 17 million Americans have diabetes today, including about
16 million with Type 2. In addition, at least 16 million more
Americans have pre-diabetes -- a condition that raises a
person's risk of getting type 2 diabetes. However, a diagnosis
of pre-diabetes does not mean that diabetes is inevitable, and
the new campaign aims at encouraging people to take modest steps
that will reduce their risks. Nationally, diabetes has increased
nearly 50 percent in the past 10 years alone, according to CDC
estimates.

It is good news that more states are passing laws to further
expand health coverage regarding diabetes. If you have diabetes
and insurance, most likely you can get your supplies at now cost.

Go to this url:
http://www.nadmedia.net/diabetes-supplies-atnocost.asp and click
on the “get more information” link to see if you qualify for no
cost diabetes supplies.

This article was written using various sources. Some of the
statistics may not be up to date at the time of this writing.

The Last Line of Defense Against Medication Errors: What You Need to Know to
Keep your Family Safe
Copyright © 2004 Timothy McNamara, MD, MPH
Medication Advisor
http://www.medicationadvisor.com/

This is a true story.

Yesterday, I picked up a new antibiotic prescription for my
daughter from my local pharmacy.

(We recently adopted my daughter from India where she had
recurrent ear infections resulting in severe hearing loss. And,
she is about to undergo the second of several planned surgeries
in order to try to repair the damage.)

Before putting her to sleep, I got the new medication out of the
bag, glanced at the instructions, and prepared to give her the
drug according to the instructions on the label.

Just before doing so, I had a quick double-take.

Something seemed to be wrong. I looked at the instructions
again, and thought to myself slowly, "What's going on...this
doesn't seem right." Then, it hit me that the dose seemed
awfully high for her.

It took me a minute or two to put the pieces together (it had
been an unusually tough fight getting her ready for bed, I was
tired, I was confident in my daughter's physician, and I was
thinking perhaps less critically that I should have). And
then I noticed it. The label had a stranger's name on it.

After another moment or two, I saw what had really happened.

The medication came in a box. Each side of the box had a
different label...one label was for my daughter and one label
was for a stranger. And, the stranger's dose was more than
double what my daughter's surgeon had recommended.

(This error didn't happen in a mom-and-pop pharmacy. It
happened in a modern new chain pharmacy whose name you would
recognize from advertisements on TV.)

I'm not a surgeon...and I'm not a pediatrician...but I am a
physician trained in internal medicine and I have spent most
of the last twelve years writing about, speaking about, and
developing systems to reduce the frequency of medication error
and improve the safety of pharmacy practice.

This pharmacy error brought the topic of drug safety home to
me...literally.

What I can tell you is that this sort of error occurs all too
often in the United States (and around the world). And, that
it can have devastating consequences for the people involved.

A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine indicated
that 25% of patients who take one or more prescription
medications will experience an adverse drug event within three
months-and 39% of these are preventable or avoidable.

The Harvard Medical Practice Study found reported in JAMA in
2001 that 30% of patients with drug-related injuries died or
were disabled for more than 6 months.

And, what almost everyone who studies this problem agrees is that
current systems for selecting drugs, dosing them, communicating
a prescription to a pharmacy, dispensing drugs, and instructing
patients on their safe use are woefully inadequate.

In this series, we are going to take a close look at the
processes that cause medication errors (some things that your
physician and pharmacist may not even want you to know) and what
steps you can specifically take to make sure that you and your
love ones are protected from this hazard.

Ten years ago, your ability to get current, objective, reliable
information on your medications in a quick and easy way was
practically non-existent. It probably would have involved a
trip to the library and required considerable knowledge about
pharmacology to get the answers.

Today, that's not the case. There is a host of on-line tools,
databases, and resources that allow you to learn information
about medications that even your physician and pharmacist may
not know.

We're going to talk about them, show you were to go, tell you
the key things you need to know about medications, expose some
myths, and let you know the questions you should be asking.
It's not as hard as it may seem.

In fact, you need to become the final line of defense in the
battle against medication errors.

Throughout, we are going to give you some key rules that should
guide your defense.

So, Rule Number 1. Trust, but verify. Never assume that the
medication you have received is the right medication for you or
that it is dosed correctly for you. Specifically, you should
check:

  · the name of the patient on the bottle;
  · the name of the doctor on the bottle;
  · the name of the medication (and cross check it to be sure
that it treats a disease or problem you actually have...
there are lots of look-alike/sound-alike drug names out
    there);
  · the dose (from an independent source...to make sure that it
    is a plausible dose for you);
  · the "route" (to make sure, for example, that eye drops are
being prescribed for the eye, and not the mouth, or the
ear...amazingly injuries from drug misplacement occur all
    the time);
  · the expiration date.

We'll talk about some specific resources that will help with
each of these throughout this series.

The result, we hope, will be the piece of mind to know that you
and your family are getting your 7 rights:

  · right drug;
  · right patient;
  · right dose;
  · right time;
  · right route;
  · right reason;
  · right documentation.

Right on!

Stress is a Killer…Will it get YOU?

Instant Success Habits

What good is Personal or Business Success...if your Health is
in the pits ? Here's a New and Original Stress Antidote...that
really works...and works every time.

AUTHORED BY...Dr. Rich Starr...PHD - Psychology

Stress will Kill your good health !

I have read a number of times that the medical profession does
not know why a preponderance of heart attacks occur on Monday
morning throughout the world. I believe I have found an answer
to this riddle.

This Killer Monday Morning Syndrome comes about, I believe,
because most people have Saturday and Sunday off from work.
Because of this time off from work this gives them more
additional time to think about things and therefore add more
additional things to their to do list, and presto they wake up
Monday morning full of stress and nervousness and don't realize
or know why.

In short, the more things they add to their to do list, the more
silent stress it puts on their physical and mental and nervous
and emotional systems and bango, this build up of more stress
can lead to internal nervousness, anxiety, dire shutdown of
inner systems, sicknesses and yes, even death.

I've just stated the problem, but as we all know, the answer to
any problem always lies within the problem, so by analyzing the
problem and by observing thousands of people, and by observing
the reactions to stress within my self, I've come up with and
invented and copyrighted and patented an antidote, a stress
antibiotic, if you will, on how to counteract this incapacitator
and killer known as stress buildup.

First, to be a good antidote, it must work fast. Second, it must
be easy to administer. Third, it must be painless and quick,
sort of like a vaccine.

This very effective and newly invented and possible ultimate
stress buster can be embodied in one word...
And the word is..."Unclustering"

Let me explain, When you have too many things "to do", on your
written or mental to do list, you have formed an ever growing
ball of clustered things to do and you have unknowingly
overloaded your nervous system and your nervous system will
silently try to juggle them all at once and try to get them
all in a line to get them all done in an orderly fashion.
The problem lies in the fact that if you cluster too many
chores to do into your nervous system pipeline, your pipeline
is not wide enough to allow this now clustered snowball to
flow through your nervous system...and zappo your nervous
system starts to short circuit and it will continue to fizzle
and snap and crackle and pop until one or all of your body's
systems start to collapse and you become ill, or yes, even die.

So, the simple antidote that I have created is that every time
you feel nervous or anxious or panicky or stressed, simply
"uncluster" your mental or written to do list.

Do this unclustering by drawing a number of circles on a blank
piece of 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper, then within each one of the
circles write in only one of the many chores that are in your
mind.

Be very careful that these circles DO NOT TOUCH EACH OTHER,
because if they do
Touch, you will then be clustering your chores and your goal is
to uncluster all of the chores in your mind so that each one of
them stands alone and will then be powerless to subdue your
health and or kill you.

Place a title on the top of this page of paper that reads
UNCLUSTER EMOTIONALLY.

So as you are filling in your circles, make sure you think hard
and put down every single one of your thoughts that are personal,
emotional, business oriented, past, present or future anxieties,
or any thoughts that come to your head whatsoever, no matter how
small or big you might think they are.

As soon as you know you have put down every single thought in
your mind, sometimes this will take more that one page, [my
personal record is 4 and ½ pages of stress filled circles]...
put this page or pages to the side of you...then turn these
page[s] UPSIDE DOWN so you can not see what is on them...then
CRUMPLE THESE PAGES UP AND THROW THEM AWAY into the trash can
IMMEDIATELY...!

Once you have done this an astounding miraculous effect will
occur within you, you will totally lose your nervousness and
anxiety and stressed and fidgety feeling. Your systems will
instantly become calm and you will have banished your stress
totally.

It would be best to take a short break of quiet time or nap as
soon as you crumple up these pages to firmly set this quiet and
peaceful feeling you are now feeling.

Then you can go forward with your life and simply do one chore
at a time...in a non-stressed manner.

Do this procedure every time you feel stressed, nervous or
overloaded. Especially do this every Sunday night or first thing
Monday morning to avoid this potential Monday morning health
debilitating problems Syndrome.

Note...do this procedure if you feel you have only a few chores
on your mind, because as you start doing this your chores and
angers and fears and griefs and worries and etc. will start
pouring out of you like water pouring out of a faucet.

The reason this procedure works so well is because each time you
do it...you will have transferred all of your CLUSTERED chores
and hurts and angers and etc. that were acting like an ever
growing snowball that was rampaging through your ANIMATED
nervous system...to an UNCLUSTERED non-snowball that is now
powerless and is now not connected to you as a person, but all
are now connected to an INANIMATE white sheet of paper.

The key transference dynamic is that your nervous system has now
literally been freed and actually relieved of doing all of these
chores so it now no longer has to juggle all of these chores to
get them done.

In short, by using this "Circles on Paper" procedure, you have
deprogrammed your nervous system so it now does not have to
contend with or address these chores and angers and frustrations
and etc. and can now bring itself back to normal.

In short, short, ...you simply UNKNOWINGLY kept piling up and
clustering this snowball of programmed instructions that
simply could not fit into the narrow pipeline of your nervous
system... so now...you are simply KNOWINGLY, one chore at a time
deprogramming yourself of this snowball cluster of instructions
and taking them out and away from your internal animate nervous
system by placing them into inanimate circles on a page of
inanimate paper...and presto...you have instantly taken yourself
out of the harms way of mega incapacitating stress. You are
going to be amazed how this method really, really works like
gangbusters every time.

Then please...be my guest and use this simple stress busting
method from now on... And ...Live healthy, live long, live well
and most of all...live happy.

How 40,000 People Reversed Heart Disease
Copyright © 2004 Weight Loss Buddy Press

Written by the Editors at Weight Loss Buddy Press in
collaboration with Hans A. Diehl, DrHSc, MPH, FACN, CNS

It is well known that about two-thirds of the U.S. population is
either overweight or obese. The U.S. Surgeon General has stated
that approximately 75% of Western diseases, such as heart
disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, gout, arthritis, excess
weight gain, hypertension, diabetes, some cancers, impotence,
biventricular disease, constipation, heartburn, and gallbladder
disease, are “lifestyle-related.” They are directly correlated
with our high fat diet, inadequate amounts of exercise, smoking,
high intake of caffeine, and high amounts of stress coupled with
insufficient support.

Hoping to address this alarming situation, more than 20 years
ago, cardiovascular epidemiologist Hans A. Diehl, DrHSc, MPH,
created the Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP). Since
then, this 40-hour community-based lifestyle intervention
program has helped more than 40,000 people rediscover their
health by preventing, arresting and reversing their diseases.
It has been conducted in more than 150 North American cities
as well as in Bangalore, India, Australia and Switzerland.
Depending upon the needs of the group, the meetings are held
either “live” with Dr. Diehl delivering the program personally
(usually meeting four times per week for four weeks) or as a
“video-based” program with certified CHIP facilitators (normally
two times per week for eight weeks). In addition, Dr. Diehl is
a best-selling author – To Your Health, Dynamic Living, and
Health Power (co-authored with Aileen Ludington, M.D.) -- as
well as the executive editor of a 24-page quarterly Lifeline
Health Letter; he has produced scores of health videos. CHIP
empowers people through its scientifically-documented,
educational and inspirational program that addresses common
western diseases -- those that used to be seen primarily later
in life. Today, these diseases increasingly appear at far
younger ages. CHIP may make all the difference in one’s life
-- even the difference between life and death.

In 1999, CHIP launched a “community health transformation
template” in Rockford, Illinois, a city with a population of
130,000. The intention was to transform Rockford into the
healthiest city in American, thereby enabling it to serve
as a model and template for cultural transformation on a
community-wide level. Recently, CHIP was recognized as just
such a model by HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson and was “approved”
under the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a “STEPS to a
HealthierUS” applicant. In addition to “live” CHIP, a series of
CHIP videos are offered through schools, churches, corporations,
and hospitals. In Rockford, CHIP is sponsored by the Swedish
American Health System’s Center for Complementary Medicine.

Who is the typical CHIP participant? Generally, CHIP participants
are over the age of 40. Most are between the ages of 50 and 59.
There are twice as many women as men, and almost 90% are married.
Clinical research, published in peer review journals, has found
that they have the following lifestyle diseases:

  * 10% report having heart disease

  * 27% have elevated blood sugar

  * 42% are overweight

  * 49% show evidence of hypertension

  * 60% are obese

  * 89% are cholesterol above 160mg%

Over the course of the program, strict adherents are likely
to experience significant clinical improvements such as the
following:

  * Serum cholesterol reduction average 15 – 20%

  * Average weight loss of six pounds

  * In about half of the participants with type 11 diabetes, a
dramatic reduction in need for insulin and hypoglycemic
    agents

  * Lowering of high blood pressure levels

  * Diminishing of angina

  * Reduced levels of depression and increase in self-esteem

Connie Thebarge’s Story

At the age of 59, Connie Thebarge, a patient at the Ottawa Heart
Institute in British Columbia, Canada, was told that her doctors
could no longer help her. After all, in addition to suffering
from hypertension, she had diabetes and painful diabetic
neuropathy. She had two heart attacks followed by a triple
coronary bypass surgery and an unsuccessful angioplasty. Every
day, she had to take 27 pills. Not surprisingly, she was also
depressed.

Yet, today, more than a decade later, Thebarge walks three miles
a day, swims twice a week, dances, and travels to Florida and
Europe. No longer depressed, she also requires far fewer pills.
How was this accomplished? Thebarge participated in CHIP and
transformed her life.

Addressing The Cause And Finding A Cure: Why Cause is Everything When It Comes
To Low Back Pain

Back Pain Workout
http://www.backpainworkout.com

There is an epidemic, at least in the States when it comes to
treating back pain. Most doctors do just that... treat back
pain rather than finding and eliminating the cause.

You can treat your symptoms for an eternity, and you may feel
better for a short period of time. To truly get at the heart
of the matter though, you have to find and eliminate the cause
of low back pain.

I'll let you in on a little secret. Most chronic low back pain
can be resolved in six weeks or less. It's true!

A majority of chronic low back pain is caused by simple factors
including:

  Ø Poor Posture
  Ø Injury
  Ø Muscle Imbalances
  Ø Improper Lifting
  Ø Extra Weight

Let's take a look at each of these more closely.

Poor Posture

Posture is everything when it comes to back pain. Good posture
results in stability and strength. Bad posture results in back
pain. Many people can alleviate chronic back pain simply by
taking the time to improve their posture. You probably can too!

Injury

We are all subject to injury at one time or another. You can
work toward preventing injury in certain circumstances however.
A lot of the injuries that result in low back pain are caused by
improper lifting techniques. You may be lifting a heavy box, or
you may be lifting a heavy weight without warming up adequately.
Either way, if you injure yourself you are subject to back pain.
What can you do to improve your chances for recovery? One of
the best things you can do is exercise. You should incorporate
stretching activities into your daily regimen. By doing so you
will condition your back and are les likely to get injured, and
more likely to recover faster when you do get injured.

Muscle Imbalances

Muscle Imbalances occur when two muscles that oppose each other
are unequally matched. If you exercise your back regularly for
example, but never exercise your stomach, you body will be in a
state of imbalance. No matter how strong your back is in this
situation, you are going to be subject to back pain. Eliminate
the muscle imbalances through rehabilitation and proper exercise
and you stand a good chance of eliminating back pain.

Improper Lifting

OK, go back and re-read the section on injury. You need to lift
correctly in order to avoid injury. NEVER bend from the waist
when picking something up off of the floor, even if it is a
feather. Always bend from the knees, and use your leg and
abdominal muscles to support you when lifting an object. Many
improper lifting injuries actually occur in the gym. This
happens when a person attempts to lift a weight that is too
heavy or fails to warm up properly. You can avoid these
injuries by paying close attention to technique at all times.

Extra Weight

Carrying around a few extra pounds may not seem like a big deal,
but when it comes to back pain it could mean the difference
between no back pain and chronic back pain. Even if you are
carrying around just ten extra pounds, your body will have to
shift and redistribute itself to accommodate the extra weight.
Consider losing the extra weight, and you may realize your back
pain soon follows.
