NathanLarsen, 3 of Algonquin, plays with blocks at his home on October 27,2008. Larsen was diagnosed with Autism about a year and half ago. Hismother, Gia, has been attending the Northern Illinois Center for Autismto gain more information about the disorder and to talk with otherparents. (Lauren M. Anderson photo)
When Annette Gallagher learned thather first child, Samuel, now 14, was autistic about 10 years ago, only10 sites came up under an online search for the disorder.
"Todaythere are millions," she said. "Back then, what I got was informationon refrigerator mothers. It said, `[autistic children] will neverspeak. You will never toilet train them.' It was `save your money foran institute.' "
She was certain the "refrigerator mother" label which implied that her child's autism was caused by her lack ofwarmth was untrue, and she was determined to find information thatdisputed the other claims.
Gallagher also was told by physicians that there was hardly any chance that she'd have a second autistic child.
"They said `people don't have two, honey,' " she said.
But then, her second son, Mason, now 12, was autistic.
"I was very angry at the time, because it wasn't supposed to be that way," she said.
Gallagher'sfamily is unusual, but data show that autism cases are on the rise.According to the Autism Society of America, 1 in 150 children now hasthe disorder. When Gallagher's elder son was diagnosed, she was told itwas 1 in 10,000.
"My own family doctor had told me he'd neverseen [autism] before, where now all you've got to do is turn the cornerand there it is," she said.
The disorder is described on theAutism Society Web site as "a complex developmental disability thattypically appears during the first three years of life and affects aperson's ability to communicate and interact with others."
Effortsto better tailor education and improve autistics' chances forindependent, productive adulthoods have increased as the number ofthose diagnosed with it has risen.
Kelly Nava, primary autismteacher at Chesak Elementary School in Lake in the Hills, said thedistrict was seeing first hand the increase in cases. Aside from theneed for a new kindergarten through second grade autism program a fewyears ago, officials also are working on a third grade and aboveprogram.
Nava attributes the rise in cases to better diagnoses.Whereas before a doctor might have thought a child was just sociallyawkward, that same child now often is treated for autism, she said.
DinaFrigo's son Anthony, 7, is one of the students about to advance out ofthe school's kindergarten through second grade program. Frigo said ithad done wonders for her son, and she was glad the district wanted toadd a specialized program for older students.
"He has just madeleaps and bounds from last year to now," she said. "He was non verbal... and now he's verbal. His learning capability is just outstanding."
GiaLarsen, an Algonquin mother with a 3-year-old autistic son, Nathan, isa member of the Northern Illinois Center for Autism. She said shebelieved that the rise in cases also could be attributed toenvironmental factors such as air pollution.
"It's real," she said. "It's right in front of us."
Gallagher, now president of the Northern Illinois Center for Autism, which hasabout 400 members, said that as the number of cases rose and autisticsage, the need for varying support grows.
"It's been an eye opener as far as the variety of people afflicted with the disorder," she said.
Tohelp with that, her group plans to build an autism center in Lake inthe Hills by January 2009. It would serve people of all ages withvarying degrees of autism, offering services ranging from therapy tovocational training.
"Unfortunately there isn't really anythingavailable for the teens and the adults and the higher functioning," shesaid. "They don't get the extra services that they still require. Theyare not making it to the level of independence they are capable of."
Larsen said the most important thing for any autism advocacy group to do was raise awareness.
"Wehave two options either, A, eradicating it, or B, living with it,"Larsen said. "We need to find some answers ... we need to talk aboutit."
What is autism?
Autism is a complexdevelopmental disability that typically appears during the first threeyears of life and affects a person's ability to communicate andinteract with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviorsand is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently andto varying degrees. There is no known single cause for autism.

Hello everyone,
I extended the deadline until Wednesday afternoon to place Pampered
Chef Orders. I heard that there was a problem trying to place the
order to support NICA....when on my website
www.pamperedchef.biz/struvla, click on our products. On the page that
comes up, there will be a pink button that says how to purchase. Upon
clicking on that it will ask for a host name. The exact host name to
list is Northern IL Center for Autism (put all of this in the host
first name box) and click on the search button. When this shows up as
the host, click on the link for NICA and then I will know to credit
your order appropriately.
If you would not like to place an order at this time, but would be
interested in booking your own cooking show, please let me know by
Wednesday afternoon also because Pampered Chef will donate an
additional $3 per booked shows to aid in raising funds for NICA.
Orders of all sizes help raise funds for the new center, so please keep
your holiday gift needs in mind as well.
Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to help raise funds for a
much-needed center!

NICA's "Dining and Dancing for Autism!" fund raising event is coming upquickly, on Saturday, November 8th, 2008. Please RSVP by responding tothis email or call NICA's phone line at (815)334-7772, if you plan toattend. We would like to provide Boulder Ridge Country Club a finalcount for this event, by midweek. Attached, please find a copy of ourinvitation, and submit with payment to NICA's mail box:
Northern Illinois Center for Autism 2413 W. Algonquin Rd., #331 Algonquin, IL 60102
A few of our members have expressed their interest in attending, butthe financial stain of our current economy has been preventing themfrom committing. The extreme expenses involved with raising a child onthe autism spectrum, only complicates the matter further. (Boy can Irelate....I have 2 on the spectrum. Smile!)
Some of our members have gotten creative, and have requestedsponsorship from their employer, to attend this event. Not only havetheir employers been happy to assist them, but some have even gone astep further, by purchasing an entire table on behalf of theircompany. This has allowed our members to share this wonderfulexperience and spread awareness of our cause, with their coworkers andfriends. I was sponsored to attend a fund raising event once, and hadsuch a wonderful time. Not only was I able to attend, but since Ididn't have to bare the expense of admission, I was able to contributeto the cause, by participating in the silent auction.....and winning anitem! I just thought I'd share this suggestion to those who could usea little assistance. It never hurts to "just ask"....and we're findingthat our loved ones, employers, friends etc...are more than happy tohelp. We'd really like to see everyone have an opportunity to sharethis fabulous evening with us!
Please RSVP and send in your registration, as soon as possible, to helpus make NICA's first full scale fund raising event a huge success!!!! We're looking forward to seeing you all on the 8th! See you soon...
Oh, I can't wait to see this! This ought to be interesting ...
Julia Berle, a TACA mom with a recovered child, will be on "The Doctors"
tomorrow talking
about vaccines and autism.

McCain(Parent's choice) --- Obama(not for "selective vaccination")
Since autism blew into my life with the diagnosis of my son, Eric, I
no longer subscribe to either party. Autism affects the children of
Democrats and Republicans equally. Autism affects Americans.
My party affiliation is now autism/vaccine safety. While there are
many other issues facing our country today - our economy, global
warming, alternative energy and fighting two wars among them-
autism/vaccine safety is my issue. For the 2008 election, I am a
one-issue voter, and I am not alone. Many voters are concerned
about vaccine safety. (HERE)
As the wife of a Marine who has served three war-time deployments
overseas over the last five years, you would think the war would be
the most important issue to me, but it's not.
This war will be over at some point, but the effects of vaccine
damage will last for generations. I am extremely concerned about
babies that are being injected on a daily basis with neurotoxins
that are causing countless medical conditions and stealing their
potential for a full life. It weighs heavily on my heart.
This is the precise reason I took it upon myself to challenge the
Presidential Candidates to issue two executive orders that, if
implemented, would begin to address vaccine safety.
VIDEO (HERE)
After months of hard work, I am pleased to report that, on Monday
night, I received an e-mail response to my questions from Douglas
Holtz -Eakin, a senior policy advisor to the McCain campaign.
The McCain campaign directly responded to my request with the
following two key points:
1) Vaccine safety is a concern. He "will work with all agencies
to take all necessary steps in an expedient manner to ensure safe
vaccines for every American family." This will include continuing
work to reduce and eliminate thimerosal (containing the known
neurotoxin mercury) from vaccines.
2) Parental choice is paramount. "The key to health care reform
is to restore control to the patients themselves."
The entire email is available HERE.
To-date, Senator Obama has not directly responded to my request.
This is what we know about Senator Obama's position regarding
vaccine safety:
1) Senator Obama does not appear to support parental choice. On September 5, 2008, Senator
Obama told a concerned parent, "I do not
support selective vaccination."
(HERE)
2) The words "vaccine safety" are not found in any of Senator
Obama's campaign materials or speeches. In response to my video
about vaccine safety, the Obama campaign sent me a general autism
position letter which did not even include the word "vaccine".
(HERE)
Senator Obama's aide and friend, Michael Strautmanis has a child
with autism. He recently wrote an excellent Op-ed piece outlining
Senator Obama's intentions to help people with disabilities. While
the disability community needs the help Mr. Strautmanis describes,
the piece does not mention vaccine safety, which may prevent
children from becoming chronically ill or disabled in the first
place. (HERE)
Many families are concerned that children are getting too many
vaccines, too soon. Whether parents choose to delay or to skip some
of the vaccinations our children receive, the risk and the choice
must be ours. Many families with children on the autism spectrum
vaccinate their subsequent children "selectively."
Parental concerns about vaccine safety are valid. The CDC admits
that "simultaneous vaccination is incompletely studied at time of
licensure". (4/4/2008)
(HERE), p.33.
Whoever is elected as President will appoint 1,100 people to
executive branch positions over the next few months. Our President
oversees the agencies that approve vaccine efficacy and safety.
It is time for strong and courageous leadership from the Commander-
In-Chief. Vaccine Safety needs to be a top priority for those who
are appointed by the next President to lead the CDC and the NIH.
Senator McCain says parents should have the final say in how they
vaccinate their own children. Senator Obama appears to disagree. I
sincerely hope Senator Obama misspoke that night in New
Jersey. If
so, I hope he clarifies soon.
If either campaign believes the above statements are in error,
please say so in public before November 4th.

Rebecca Estepp is Parent Support and Media Relations Manager for

Good Morning Everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that they are running a story on Good
Morning America today, it can be found on www.abcnews.com also, about the
10 top myths about autism. They also now have an On Call section to that
answers questions. I don't have speakers on my office computer so I wasn't
able to check that part out.
Talk to you all soon,
Amy
P.S. Don't forget the NICA Dinner and Dance for Autism on Saturday,
November 8th from 6-12. You can get a copy of the flyer in the files
section at www.mcautismgroup.org under fundraisers.
Since
autism blew into my life with the diagnosis of my son, Eric, I no
longer subscribe to either party. Autism affects the children of
Democrats and Republicans equally. Autism affects Americans.
My
party affiliation is now autism/vaccine safety. While there are many
other issues facing our country today - our economy, global warming,
alternative energy and fighting two wars among them- autism/vaccine
safety is my issue. For the 2008 election, I am a one-issue voter, and
I am not alone. Many voters are concerned about vaccine safety. (HERE)
As
the wife of a Marine who has served three war-time deployments overseas
over the last five years, you would think the war would be the most
important issue to me, but it's not.
This
war will be over at some point, but the effects of vaccine damage will
last for generations. I am extremely concerned about babies that are
being injected on a daily basis with neurotoxins that are causing
countless medical conditions and stealing their potential for a full
life. It weighs heavily on my heart.
This is the precise reason I took it upon myself to challenge the
Presidential Candidates to issue two executive orders that, if
implemented, would begin to address vaccine safety. VIDEO (HERE)
After months of hard work, I am pleased to report that, on Monday
night, I received an e-mail response to my questions from Douglas Holtz
-Eakin, a senior policy advisor to the McCain campaign.
The McCain campaign directly responded to my request with the following two key points:
1)
Vaccine safety is a concern. He "will work with all agencies to take
all necessary steps in an expedient manner to ensure safe vaccines for
every American family." This will include continuing work to reduce
and eliminate thimerosal (containing the known neurotoxin mercury) from
vaccines. 2) Parental choice is paramount. "The key to health care reform is to restore control to the patients themselves." The entire email is available HERE.
To-date, Senator Obama has not directly responded to my request.
This is what we know about Senator Obama's position regarding vaccine
safety:
1) Senator Obama does not appear to support parental
choice. On September 5, 2008, Senator Obama told a concerned parent,
"I do not support selective vaccination." (HERE)
2) The words "vaccine safety" are not found in any of Senator
Obama's campaign materials or speeches. In response to my video about
vaccine safety, the Obama campaign sent me a general autism position
letter which did not even include the word "vaccine". (HERE)
Senator
Obama's aide and friend, Michael Strautmanis has a child with autism.
He recently wrote an excellent Op-ed piece outlining Senator Obama's
intentions to help people with disabilities. While the disability
community needs the help Mr. Strautmanis describes, the piece does not
mention vaccine safety, which may prevent children from becoming
chronically ill or disabled in the first place. (HERE)
Many families are concerned that children are getting too many
vaccines, too soon. Whether parents choose to delay or to skip some of
the vaccinations our children receive, the risk and the choice must be
ours. Many families with children on the autism spectrum vaccinate
their subsequent children "selectively."
Parental concerns about vaccine safety are valid. The CDC admits
that "simultaneous vaccination is incompletely studied at time of
licensure". (4/4/2008) (HERE), p.33.
Whoever is elected as President will appoint 1,100 people to
executive branch positions over the next few months. Our President
oversees the agencies that approve vaccine efficacy and safety.
It is time for strong and courageous leadership from the
Commander-In-Chief. Vaccine Safety needs to be a top priority for
those who are appointed by the next President to lead the CDC and the
NIH.
Senator McCain says parents should have the final say in how they
vaccinate their own children. Senator Obama appears to disagree. I
sincerely hope Senator Obama misspoke that night in New Jersey. If so,
I hope he clarifies soon.
If either campaign believes the above statements are in error, please say so in public before November 4th.
