Kelly,
Hello, and Thanks.  I'll be there, but being a single parent with my nine year old, I will have him with me.  I'm the one who brought my son last time to the first meeting in Crystal Lake, and he was pretty well contained behavior wise.  Is that aok with you and your family?  Let me know.  Thanks for a great opportunity for even more changes to happiness through nutrition.  email:  gilligan_mary@...

Hi all,
I'll be sending a flier out via email to the whole parent group
tomorrow but wanted you to be the first to know about the GFCF diet
workshop I'll be teaching. It will be Tuesday November 1 from 6pm - 8
pm at my home in Cary. This is a workshop designed for parents who
are beginners or relatively new to the diet. I'll also be scheduling
an intermediate group (GFCF corn free and soy free)coming up... and
eventually and advanced group (all free and rotation). I hope this
will help some parents. The diet has been the cornerstone for my
daughter.

Feel free to email me privatly for RSVP and directions.

Hello Jennifer:

I would like to invite you to our next meeting of the McHenry County IL Autism Support Group on Tuesday, October 25th at 7:00 PM at the Hannah Beardsley School at 515 E. Crystal Lake Ave in Crystal Lake.

This is only the 2nd official group meeting so we are just in the beginning stages of devoloping the processes.

My wife and I also have a newly diagnosed 3 year old daughter and like yourself, we are looking for all the support and resources we can find locally.

Feel free to email me with any questions.

Thank you,

Dave

My son Alex has been on the diet for about 5 months now and we've
seen an improvement! I'd like to put together a list of foods as
well to share. We've found some good bread substitutes, crackers
and cookies. Mostly, he likes to eat meat, fruits and veggies -
thanks goodness, so the other items are treats. I'll try to go
through my cabinets this weekend and put a list together of some
good eats.

Hi-
Hello the great team that we have, as I am so glad with every uplifting email that I received.  I have been through all the hoops and drama since my wonderful son was two.  I am now a single parent of a nine year old who is my pride and joy.  My son has PDD, ODD, and ADHD.  Through Children's Memorial, and many specialists along with Family Services, he has made great strides.  The daycare just lights up when Darrin arrives, and he now is a role model for the other children, almost like a big brother.  I know days and of course all of our evenings can be overbearing for any individual that is conquering their diagnosis, and the family has their toll as well.  I just wanted to let every family know that as time goes on, its the memories of happiness in my son that keeps me positive.  I have undergone numerous parenting classes to learn how to assist in my child's development with his diagnosis, and feel as if the school dist. is my second family.  The kids at school even know who I am, as I've attended the field trips to assist my son in containing his behavior in a healthy, and positive way.  I too would like to set up play dates for social skills, and to let the kids be themselves in a safe and constructive environment with positive redirecting as needed with rewards.  Rewards and consequences have enriched our lives for an outgoing and loving family that I am so glad to reside in.  My son has one friend from another school, and this seems to be doing great, even the sleep over was great!!!!  Maybe with more friends, we can develop our own field trips and events amongst ourselves!!!!  email: gilligan_mary@...

Our neurologist is Philip Minor @ Rockford Memorial Hospital:  815-961-2000.   The first few time she saw him, he couldn't even touch her.  Then after we started the meds, the next visit (3 mos later) she touched his tie, another 3 mos, she actual took his pen from him.  He was so overjoyed.  Things have gone foward from there.

Hi,
My 12 year old has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. It is
always an uphill battle and each year he changes. Therapists told me
what he needs most is play groups with children that he can relate to
and form relationships with. Have yet to find anything that would
come close. Would love to sit and talk about it sometime.
On a lighter note though, My son Jake decided he wanted to run for
7th grade student council, class representative, We sat and had the
talk about winning & losing gracefully. Well he won! I was so
excited, maybe the council will take him under their wing and he will
do great. I just take it day by day

Thanks
Leeann

Our daughter, Maggie was diagnosed right around her 2nd birthday.  We
were lucky our Neurologist had just found out about an experimental
(at the time) use of Excelon, an alzheimer drug, on very young
children, who were recently diagnosed with autism.  Since Maggie
started the medication, her eye contact has improved immensely, she
is able to concentrate better and has progressed very well.  She has
been on the medication for 2 years now and we are very happy with the
results.

My name is Kelly and the diet has been amazingly successful for us. I
have taught the diet in small groups before and would be happy to do
the same again. The beginners group is for parents just starting the
diet. I also do next step groups and advanced. If you are

Bruce:

Our daughter has big time sensory issues and she is 3 years old and still is on Gerber #3's - she has a bad gag reflex and we have had no luck transitioning her to solid foods.  Also, she only drinks milk from a baby bottle and Sprite from a straw in a cup.  Sometimes a little water also, but that is it.

We have started slowly with trying to remove dairy.  At first we completely cut out real milk and tried both Almond and Rice Milk...that did not work very well, our daughter completely revolted and would not drink anything.

We took the suggestion of another family in the same situation and have gone from whole milk to 2% and now are mixing in Rice Milk with the 2%.  The idea is to eventually get our daughter to forget how real milk tastes and eventually getting her to drink the rice milk exclusively.  When we cook we only use rice milk as she can't tell the difference.

Pacific brand Rice Milk is the one my daughter likes the best, but other families have indicated that Blue Diamond Almond Milk is good, but each child will be different.

As far as the other part of the diet, the Gluetin, we have been trying to watch everything we purchase....with the baby food it is has been relatively easy thus far.

Bottom line with our initial efforts is we have seen some positive changes with our daughter and are going to further continue expanding the diet.

We definately would also like to hear more from families that have tried and currently doing the diet.

Thanks for the question, Dave. I too, am interested in learning more
about this diet. I listened to several folks talk about during our
first meeting and I must admit, that I know very little about it.
When discussing it with my wife, she indicated that it involved
staying away from Milk (dairy products) and breads. My son consumes
milk and bread as a large part of his diet. I'm not sure if I want to
even consider taking those away from him. Any feedback from anyone
with experience in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello everyone, my wife Susan and I attended the first meeting in
Crystal lake and found it informative and are looking forward to the
next meeting. I'm not sure how most of you feel but we have been
researching autism and asperger's syndrome for the past few years and
have received many conflicting bits and pieces of info. The one thing
that we have found is that each child is different and what works for
one does not always work for another. The main thing is that if we all
put our heads together we may each find something that someone else is
doing that will work for our children. Our son has been diagnosed with
asperger's and turett's syndrome. An interesting combination. He is
high functioning but many times a day he is not in the same world as
we are. He is constantly making noises or talking and repeating
cartoon shows or imaginary friends.
If we could find a way to help anyone, or possibly help put pressure
on Springfield for fuding at a school level we are more than willing.
We are also looking for a manageable way to get together with other
parents so we can vent our frustrations with schools, funding, people
staring in public, the toll on the other family members, avoiding
meltdowns and the screaming fits and also the trouble between mom and
dad over how to deal or correct the child with out conflict. I'm sorry
for running on about this but there is much to say and much to do.
Thanks, Douglas and Susan Brant

Can anyone share any successes with the GFCF diet for their autistic
child.

We have been slowly trying to get my daughter on the diet and would
like some feedback.

Thanks!

Welcome to the new McHenry County IL Autism Support Group online!

After my wife and I attended the 1st meeting in Crystal Lake, we were
very happy to finally have a local venue to learn, discuss, express,
etc regarding the daily challenges with child's autism.

I volunteered to start this online support group and look for all
feedback regarding the site.

Thank you,

Dave
