I'm not sure why, when I e-mail the list, all of my paragraphs run
into each other. I'm hoping that I by reposting this directly from
the group that I can circumvent this annoying little bug and make the
post a little bit more readable.
Grady--
I'm sure that along with myself many others in this group can
empathize with your frustration in trying to find the proper help you
need as a male with an eating disorder. It's especially difficult to
find someone who specializes in -male- eating disorders as we make up
a small percentage of the eating disorder populace. Several years ago
it was estimated that 5-10% of the eating disordered were males, it
seems, however, that the precedence of eating disorders in males has
been on the rise with recent estimates tipping the scales at 16%.
Truthfully, it's a victory that leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I'm
very pleased that the incidence of eating disorders in males is being
taken seriously, but I'm incredibly saddened that it has only occured
at the hands of 6% more suffering.
We live in a capitalist country, that means that demand rules supply.
Even with this new found consciousness of male eating disorders,
there simply aren't enough of us to have mental health professionals
specialize in that area. I live in a pretty conservative area, with
a low population. This results in there only being -one- ED
specialist. This is a double-edged sword, though. While she has/is
treat(ed)ing a good number of ED patients, and the majority of them
being female, her monopoly on ED patients has had her treating males
in the past. Sometimes an ED specialist is all that we can ask for.
They may not specialize in treating male clients, but I assure you
that they have 100% experience treating human clients. The difference
is subtle, but real.
I'm fairly sure you're not interested in in-patient care centres
since you simply indicated out-patient treatment professionals, but
if you are interested in admitting yourself to in-patient treatment
there is only one ED Unit in the US that specifically treats Male ED
patients. If you don't have health insurance this option can be
costly and that is what usually dissuades ED patients from seeking
Resident Care at an ED Unit. However, if you're interested, the
clinic has two locations, one in Milwaukee, WI and the other in
Oconomowoc, WI. You can learn more about their facilities and
services offered at http://www.rogershospital.org .
You can find some excellent male ED information and listing of
resources at the Gürze Books website:
http://www.gurze.net/site12_5_00/abouteating_males.htm . They speak
about the Rogers Memorial Hospital on the site, as well as the
director of the program, himself a recovering ED patient.
These are a few of the sites you will see in the ED resources from
Gürze Books, but I think they bear some individual mentioning here.
The ED Referral Site: http://www.edreferral.com : contains Male ED
specific information as well as possibly the most extensive database
of mental health professionals that have training and specialization
in ED treatment. This will be where you'll want to start to find a
specialist in your area. Feel free to peruse the information they
provide on ED but be sure to make use of their referral service!
Simply click on the "For A Referral Click Here." link, read the
agreement and indicate that you agree with it, then choose your
location.
In addition, there is an absolutely magnificent website for ED
recovery, SomethingFishy. If you haven't visited there, do it! :
http://www.something-fishy.org : You can find support, discussion,
resources and more at this site, it's the quintessential ED recovery
site -- be sure to visit. If you look down the menu on the left hand
side of the site you will see a link reading "Treatment Finder".
Click on this and then click "Find a Treament". I'm unfamiliar with
CA area codes, so they may not have listings for your area, but
definitely check here -- it's a GREAT resource! This site is one of
your greatest resources -- use it well.
This group is another of your resources, feel free to ask
any questions you need to, with fear or doubt or shame. We're here
for each other, a band of brothers, bound together by what builds a
wall between ourselves and the world.

J.Z. Andromalius
