We do not have to wait for a wealthy benefactor or a pharmaceutical
company to decide to fund more contraceptive research. There is another
option. Well directed non-profits can be very effective in supporting
researchers.
CCFA is a great example of how this can work. Forty years ago there were
few treatments for colitis or chrohn's disease. Now there are great
successes like remicade. Much of this progress is due to the work of one
non-profit group. CCFA aka NFIC has supported researchers throughout
their careers. They have funded salaries, provided start-up monies and
even paid for hard to fund but essential items like computer equipment.
Almost all of their fundraising money has been funneled to the
researchers. They rarely lose researchers and frequently gain new ones.
All too often male contraceptive researchers die off before anything makes
it to the public (Voegelli)or they switch studies due to constraints
(Fahim). Some even leave academia because they lack support (Dr. Joseph
Hall). A lot of people
are desperate for something new and would love to help out researchers
like Dr. Guha and Dr. Weiss. It is great that your site makes it easier
to write letters. We need a site that makes it easier to write a check.
We need a non-profit that can funnel money to selected researchers. I am
not suggesting that we would be able to fund Dr. Guha's next clinical
trial. It takes time to grow. But we could at least pay for office
supplies. If anyone is interested in how CCFA has worked here's the link.

If anyone else is interested in forming a similar non-profit let me know.
