Establishment of "World Malaria Day" - approved at 60th World Health
Assembly (WHA)
The Roll Back Malaria Partnership welcomes the decision to establish
World Malaria Day,
a key element of Resolution EB 120.R16 which was passed during the
60th WHA in Geneva today.
Members states emphasized their need to choose the most appropriate
day or days on which
to draw attention to the burden of malaria in their countries, but all
agreed that greater awareness
was needed and the establishment of World Malaria Day would heighten
advocacy and mobilize
many more communities to get involved in the fight.
"There has been a strong call from many RBM Partners on this issue and
we are delighted the world health community
recognizes malaria is a global emergency that knows no borders . We
look forward to working on the first
World Malaria Day in 2008 with all countries and partners" ,stated the
Executive Director of the RBM Partnership,
Dr Awa Marie Coll Seck.
"Malaria Day shall be commemorated annually on 25 April or on such
other day or days as individual
Member States may decide , in order to provide education and
understanding of malaria as a global scourge
that is preventable and a disease that is curable. "
