They just had an interesting segment on our local news. A doctor has
invented a method whereby a magnet is placed on a patients tongue. He said
that even fully paralyzed person normally has full control of their tongue.
So there are 6 movements that the tongue makes, that takes only 5 minutes to
learn, and the magnet on the tongue--via these movements--is able to direct
an electric wheel chair.
They showed a student testing the process, and said there had been 6
volunteers so far, and each was able to get the wheelchair to do whatever
they wanted just by moving their tongues.
They are also working on setting up a keyboard that will respond by typing a
letter when the magnet is touched to a certain tooth.
They said when a patient wants to eat or talk (it looked like the magnet was
just taped to the end of the tongue) they just put the magnet into "sleep"
mode.
