Hear No Evil See No Evil Speak No Evil The Modern Ministry of Truth
When Eric Blair, writing as "George Orwell" wrote "1984 in 1948 he
described the propaganda ministry of Oceania, one of the major
powers of his mythical world, as "The Ministry of Truth", whose
function was to create lies.
What if the Modern Ministry of Truth has the same function as that
foreseen by Blair, writing as Orwell?
The scene was Warsaw, the date October 17th, 2000, the speaker:
Bennett Freeman, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for
democracy, human rights and labor, the comments he made then ended
as follows:
"Let us commit ourselves to allow our citizens to express their
will, confident that it will be respected. Let us further ensure
that the political environment is open and fair, so as to ensure an
informed electorate that will choose wisely."
source: http://www.usembassy.it/file2000_10/alia/a0101913.htm
Clearly key American media outlets, both broadcast and cable, as
well as
print media, are parts of "U.S. infrastructure critical to national
security". Allowing such key assets to be influenced by persons or
nations or others hostile to America is unwise, to put it mildly.
Should they be so controlled how could there be an "informed
electorate"? An electorate lied to by the Modern Ministry of Truth
could not "choose wisely".
"US lawmaker plans foreign divestiture bill
By Susan Cornwell Thursday March 2nd 2006
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The chairman of the U.S. House of
Representatives Armed Services Committee said on Thursday he would
introduce legislation requiring foreign companies to divest any
holdings of U.S. infrastructure critical to national security.
Duncan Hunter, an influential Republican from California, also vowed
to "kill" with legislation a pending deal to allow a state-owned
Arab company to take over terminals in major U.S. ports.
He said infrastructure such as ports, electric grids and power
plants should not be owned by foreign companies. Under his
legislation, "Any foreign companies that own critical infrastructure
would be required to divest so it's owned by Americans," Hunter told
reporters.
Hunter's bill would direct the

Department of Defense and the Department of
Homeland Security to define and identify critical infrastructure, he
said.
Earlier on Thursday on the other side of the Capitol, there was
testimony from Bush administration officials that foreign companies
already dominate operations in many American ports. When he was
asked about this, Hunter said: "In this era of terrorism, we don't
think that's good."
As for state-owned Dubai Ports World's plan to buy P&O, acquiring
management of six U.S. ports, Hunter said the deal should not go
forward. But if it does, the acquisition should be "rolled back"
with legislation.
Hunter expressed confidence other Republicans would agree with him
once more facts were known.
"I think the Republican leadership in both houses will come to the
conclusion that these aren't the folks you want to operate your
ports," he said.
There is legislation already in both the House and the Senate to
review DP World's $6.85 billion deal and give Congress the right to
disapprove it.
Dubai Ports World officials told Hunter's Armed Services Committee
the deal should be completed as soon as next Monday or Tuesday,
pending the outcome of any court appeals in Britain.
The Bush administration in January approved the DP World deal, but
agreed over the weekend to give it a 45-day review after lawmakers
from both political parties said they were worried it could
undermine security.
Hunter was scathing about the DP World contract, saying United Arab
Emirates officials had been "instrumental" in the transshipment of
nuclear materials and weapons of mass destruction components.
"Dubai can't be trusted with our critical infrastructure," he added.

Clearly control of American media cannot be entrusted to those
hostile to America. We were horrified to see important Fox News
people turn on a dime,
and go from exposing the Dubai Ports Deals, to supporting them.
What was behind the sudden turnaround at Fox? Was it support for
President Bush? Or, frighteningly, was it directed by something else
entirely?
How could Fox's Bill O'Reilly, for example, go from someone who had
been talking for show after show about border security, to someone
who endorsed the Dubai Ports Deals? What did that endorsement do to
O'Reilly's credibility? What sort of spin was that?

It might seem from glancing at the situation that Ailes'
relationship to the Bush Family and the support of important Fox
people for President Bush motivated important Fox people to support
the Dubai Ports Deal. But what if it was something else entirely?
We are quite concerned about
the situation at Fox, which sees the embattled Rupert
Murdoch fighting off what may be a takeover attempt by tycoon John
Malone
with the assistance, (at what price???), of Saudi Prince Alwaleed
bin Talal.
Fox is critical in a media dominated by appeasers of arab
terrorists. If Murdoch ends up paying the price of sacrificing Fox's
support for the war against terror, in order to keep Talal's
support, who will be left to bring the anti-appeasement message to
the American people?
"Saudi prince always ready to help Rupert
By Brian Sullivan and James Cordahi in Paris
November 8, 2005
Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the world's fifth-richest man, has
declared he
is ready at any time to raise his stake in Rupert Murdoch's News
Corp to protect
existing management from any takeover attempt by Murdoch rival John
Malone.
Prince Alwaleed was commenting on his holdings in News Corp,
Citigroup and Time
Warner during an interview on Sunday at the Hotel George V in Paris"
(Note not
part of article being quoted
the hotel is owned by the prince.)

"On efforts by Mr Malone's Liberty Media to take control of News
Corp and Mr
Murdoch's controversial poison pill defence, he said: "Eventually
this thing
will just have to go away. It's not worth the fight with the
shareholders or the media. There's no need for it.
"If we need to raise our stake in News Corp, it's something we're
willing to do very swiftly.
"We are always fully mobilised to come to the defence of the existing
management. We'll spend whatever is needed to keep this company
independent.
"I am not anti-Malone. I am pro-Murdoch and pro-News Corp."
The prince owns 5.46 per cent of News Corp, which is controlled by
chairman
Rupert Murdoch, 74, and his family. Prince Alwaleed's stake is
valued at $US2.6 billion ($3.5 billion).
The prince made his last big bet on western companies in 2000 as the
internet
bubble began to deflate. That year he invested $US2 billion in 19 US
stocks,
including $US50 million each in internet companies Amazon,
DoubleClick and
Priceline. He also put $US200 million into WorldCom, which went
bankrupt in 2002.
Prince Alwaleed called the investments his "Millennium Bug" in his
authorised
biography, Alwaleed: Businessman, Billionaire, Prince, written by
former Cable
News Network host Riz Khan and published last month by William
Morrow.
On Citigroup's share price and performance he said: "Citigroup for
the last
three years has stagnated from a price point of view; clearly there
were so many clouds over what was going on at Citigroup.
"The performance of the company itself is incredible. The company
last quarter
flushed almost $US8 billion of profits. The company is doing good."
On the significance of his ventures with Deutsche Bank and HSBC
Holdings plc:
"My alliance with HSBC is very much Africa continent-based. With
Deutsche Bank,
it only covers Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
"I go where my interests are. There's no doubt that HSBC helps us a
lot in the
African continent and Deutsche Bank will help us a lot in Saudi
Arabia and the Gulf region.
"But this will never, ever take away from my international alliance
and global link with Citigroup.
"Once we get involved in a major holding, as in Citigroup, the
likelihood of us
getting involved internationally and globally in another
international bank is remote."
On reports that he may start an investment fund with Citigroup
chairman Sandy Weill:
"Whatever Sandy gives me I will look at very seriously."
On the outlook for Apple Computer: "Our holding was around 5 per
cent. We are
keeping Apple as one of our core investments. We are not adding at
this stage.
"The benefit of the iPod and all that Steve Jobs has done have
already been put in the price."

Talal has been called "The Red Prince", he has long been groomed by
Syria to take over Lebanon.

the company made a name for itself by facilitating a $590 million

(IsraelWire-9/14) According to a report by the Reuters News Agency,
Saudi
billionaire Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal has been assured that the
planned
Jerusalem exhibit at the Millennium Village of Florida's Epcot Center
would not depict Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as originally
planned.
According to the report, the Disney officials assured Saudi
officials that
the planned exhibit which was to show the accomplishments of the
Jewish
State and the Jewish People was to depict Jerusalem as the capital of
Israel. The planned move was met with threats of an international
boycott
by the Arab League and officials in the United Arab Emirates.

profile
international portfolio of investments in banks, hotels,
broadcasting, airlines, computers, cars and real estate.

the company is the "anchor of the industry" and will flourish even
though other high-tech companies are "collapsing and going under left
and right."
"America Online is the No. 1 Internet company in the world and has a
solid foundation and is making profit," the prince said in published
reports. "When the dust settles on the dot-com industry, America
Online will be around."

"ADL Praises Mayor Giuliani for Taking a Principled Stand Against
Saudi's
Remarks on Trade Center Disaster
New York, NY, October 12, 2001 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL)
today
commended New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for his unequivocal
rejection of
statements by Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal criticizing U.S.
policy in the
Middle East as a cause for the attacks on September 11. The mayor
also refused
to accept the prince's donation of funds to the relief effort.

"We commend Mayor Giuliani for standing up to Prince Alwaleed and
rejecting his
tainted and forced rationalizations on terrorism and U.S. foreign
policy," said
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "We thank the mayor for
sending a
strong message to those who continue to degrade the memory of the
victims of the
World Trade Center attack with inappropriate and opportunistic
comparisons to
suffering in other parts of the world. There can be no moral
equivalency for
terrorism, and Mayor Giuliani, in rejecting the prince's offer, has
made that
completely clear. The mayor's wise leadership in the aftermath of
the terrorist
attacks continues to provide reassurance to New Yorkers and all
Americans."
Prince Alwaleed, after agreeing to commit $10 million to a relief
fund for
relatives of the victims of the September 11 attacks, issued a
statement
criticizing U.S. policy in the Middle East, particularly toward
Israel. "Our
Palestinian brethren continue to be slaughtered at the hands of
Israelis while
the world turns the other cheek," the statement said, in part.
Mayor Giuliani categorically rejected the statement and indicated
that the city
would not accept the donation. "The people who did it (the terrorist
attacks)
lost any right to ask for justification for it when they slaughtered
4,000 or
5,000 innocent people. And to suggest that there's a justification
for it only
invites this happening in the future. It is highly irresponsible and
very, very dangerous," the mayor said.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading
organization
fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract
hatred, prejudice and bigotry."

"Like everyone else in the United States, the group stood transfixed
as the events of September 11 unfolded. Present were former secretary
of defense Frank Carlucci, former secretary of state James Baker III,
and representatives of the bin Laden family. This was not some
underground presidential bunker or Central Intelligence Agency

plush setting for the annual investor conference of one of the most
powerful, well-connected, and secretive companies in the world: the
Carlyle Group. And since September 11, this little-known company has
become unexpectedly important. That the Carlyle Group had its

founding. Among those associated with Carlyle are former U.S.

now to return to article being quoted:

"Second Dubai firm in US port link …

the United Arab Emirates investment firm Istithmar.
Fellow Dubai firm Dubai Ports World has agreed to cede control of US
ports acquired in its takeover of P&O to a "US entity" after a
political outcry.
The US Congress threatened to block the takeover on security
grounds.
`Rigorous security'
Republican and Democrat politicians both claimed that the deal would
make key US assets more vulnerable to terrorist attack.
However, as Dubai Ports World conceded the deal would not go ahead
as planned, it emerged that Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) has had
extensive interests in the US for many years.
ISS arranges pilots, tugs and dock workers for shipping companies
and works with the US Customs to ensure the smooth arrival and
departure of vessels at ports such as New York, New Jersey and San
Francisco.
ISS was bought by Istithmar, an investment firm ultimately owned by
the Dubai royal family, for $285m in January.
Following the takeover, ISS maintained its global headquarters in
London, where the firm's management is based.
In a statement, ISS said all its staff working at US ports were
fully vetted and cleared before being employed.
"As a company, ISS has undergone rigorous external security checks,
as well as having comprehensive internal policies on security," it
said.
Dubai Ports World has not explicitly said it will sell the
subsidiaries responsible for US ports although the White House has
suggested that this will be the end result.
Despite this apparent concession, leading US politicians have called
for a comprehensive review of ownership of key transport assets…."

Note: Not part of article being quoted, but interesting, to say the
least:
"Chrysler was bought some years ago, it is now part of a
bigger, non-U.S. firm which describes itself as:
"A Truly Global Company…passenger car brands include Maybach,
Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Jeep Dodge and smart. Commercial vehicle
brands include Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Sterling, Western Star,

services through Daimler Chrysler Financial Services.

Daimler Chrysler has a global workforce and a global shareholder
base. With 384,723 employees, Daimler Chrysler achieved revenues of
EUR 142.1 billion (USD 192.3 billion) in 2004….
…The Corporate History/Corporate Archives department of
DaimlerChrysler AG has its origins in the historical archives
founded in 1936 by the former Daimler-Benz AG; it has one of the
largest industrial archives in Europe."
And it is quite a history, another source on that history states:
"It is no historical secret that all of Adolf Hitler's favorite cars
were manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. Germany's 23rd Chancellor and
Führer of the Nazi Party owned Mercedes-Benz cars long before he was
even well-known in Germany. Hitler was a personal friend of Jakob
Werlin, the Mercedes Benz representative in München (Munich),
Germany and one of the directors of Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart-
Untertürkenheim. When Hitler became Chancellor he purchased or
caused to be purchased, enormous quantities of Mercedes-Benz built
machinery. With Hitler's benevolence both Mercedes-Benz and his
friend Werlin prospered greatly. Mercedes-Benz in aller Welt"

Göring, Werlin (in a SS uniform), Hühnlein and other Nazis examining
cars in the Daimler-Benz display at the Internationale Automobil und

in Berlin in March of 1939."
"According to the article excerpted from below:

Before the Gulf war, estimates of Saddam's personal wealth were as
high as $20 billion….
Following the Gulf war, Kuwait retained Kroll Associates (a
leading "white collar" private investigations firm) to track and
identify Saddam Hussein's financial infrastructure with the hope of
receiving compensation incurred during the Iraqi occupation.
The investigation determined that much of his fortune is hidden in
private numbered accounts in the Middle East and Europe. Kroll also
was able to identify and ultimately publicized Saddam's investments
in large European companies such as Hachette 10%, which owns such
publications as: American Photo, Boating, Car and Driver, Elle, Elle
Décor, Ellegirl, Flying, Home Magazine, Metropolitan Home, Woman's
Day plus many others to name a few. Also, Hachette owns several news
publishing features such as; Guardian Newspapers LTD., The Eagle, El
Diario, Le Bien Public to name a few. Other Companies in which
Saddam holds major stock in is: Matra 10% and Daimler Benz 15% to
name a couple more.
But since Kroll is a private organization and had little support
from the international community, it could only scratch at the
surface….

Bush camp investigating a 2nd Dubai company
JONATHAN WEISMAN SUSAN SCHMIDT
Washington Post
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration, stung by the public outcry
over the Dubai port deal, has launched a national security
investigation of another Dubai-owned company that is set to take
over plants in Georgia and Connecticut that make precision
components used in engines for military aircraft and tanks.
The administration notified congressional committees this week that
its secretive Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States
is investigating the security implications of Dubai International
Capital's $1.2 billion acquisition of London-based Doncasters Group
Ltd., which has subsidiaries in the United States…. Dubai
International Capital's acquisition of Doncasters could present some
of the same political problems created by Dubai Ports World's
purchase of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co.
Once again, a state-controlled Dubai company with deep pockets is
purchasing a British firm with U.S. holdings. Doncasters has
operations in nine U.S. locations and manufactures precision parts
for defense contractors such as Boeing, Honeywell, Pratt & Whitney
and General Electric.
A spokesperson for Doncasters' corporate office in Connecticut said
the company had no comment on the security probe.
The CFIUS met last week and tentatively decided to subject the
Doncaster proposal to a 45-day investigation, and it finalized that
decision in a conference call late Monday. The decision came on the
final day of the regular 30-day review period…"

"Dubai Company to Transfer U.S. Ports to American Company
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
and CARL HULSE
Published: March 9, 2006
WASHINGTON, March 9 — DP World, the United Arab Emirates state-owned
company that had agreed to buy several port terminals in the United
States, said today that it will transfer those properties to an
American-owned company, bowing to a political groundswell against
the acquisition.
The decision came just hours after a delegation of Republican
leaders in Congress told President Bush in an Oval Office meeting
that Congress would act within days to block the company's
acquisition of the United States port terminals in the name of
national security, lawmakers present said.
"The House spoke very clearly," Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee, the
Republican leader, said in an interview after the meeting.
Announcing the company's decision on the Senate floor about 1 p.m.,
Senator John W. Warner, Republican of Virginia, read a statement
from the company: "Because of the strong relationship between the
United Arab Emirates and the United States and to preserve that
relationship, DP World has decided to transfer fully the U.S.
operations of P & O North America to a United States entity."
The announcement did not immediately mollify Democrats, though
Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, a chief critic of the deal,
called it a promising development. But he added that if the Dubai-
owned company ultimately retained control over the port
operations, "I don't think our goals would be accomplished and
obviously we will need to study this agreement carefully."
Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, concurred. "We
will have to wait and see what is really going to happen," Mr. Reid
said.
On Wednesday evening, the House Appropriations Committee voted
overwhelmingly to scuttle the deal giving DP World control of some
major seaport operations without awaiting the outcome of a 45-day
review of potential security risks.
Representative Jerry Lewis, the California Republican who is
chairman of the panel, added an amendment blocking the transaction
to an essential emergency spending measure for the war in Iraq and
for Hurricane Katrina recovery.
The vote was 62 to 2, a signal of the deep opposition to the
takeover on both sides of the aisle.
Mr. Lewis's effort was endorsed by Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of
Illinois, so the vote was not exactly a surprise. But it was a stark
example of Republicans breaking with their president, after years of
working in tandem or quietly settling differences behind closed
doors."

(March 9th, 2006) "Kolbe defends Bush Dubai ports plan
The Business Journal of Phoenix - 9:43 PM MST Wednesday
by Mike Sunnucks
The Business Journal
Arizona Republican Congressman Jim Kolbe was one of only two
lawmakers to vote against a federal measure Wednesday aimed at
blocking a controversial White House deal involving turning port
operations over to a state-owned company from the United Arab
Emirates.
The House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday voted 62-2 in favor
of a measure blocking a plan to let Dubai-based DP Ports World from
taking over control of terminal operations at a number of U.S. ports
including New York and Miami. DP Ports World is acquiring a British
firm that currently handles those port operations.
Kolbe, a Tucson Republican who is not running for re-election this
year, voted against the measure along with U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-
Va.
Phoenix Democratic Congressman Ed Pastor also serves on the
Appropriations Committee and voted for the anti-UAE ports measure
which was put forward by committee chairman Jerry Lewis, R-Calif.
Kolbe defended his vote against the port plan.
"I opposed Chairman Lewis' amendment which blocks the Dubai World
Ports deal
because it diverts attention away from the real issue of port
security. Who
manages the ports has nothing to do with safety. Dubai is a proven
ally in the war on terror and blocking the sale sends the wrong
message. We must focus our attention on the issue at hand—providing
our ports with the
technology and resources needed to prevent terrorist attacks," said
Kolbe in a statement.
Critics of the Dubai ports plan worry about security and letting a
state-owned firm from an Arab nation manage U.S. seaports. The
United Arab Emirates has been an ally of the U.S. but does not
recognize Israel, and two of the 9/11 hijackers were from the UAE.
Scottsdale GOP Congressman J.D. Hayworth has joined rival Senate
Democrats including New York's Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton
in opposing DP World's port takeover. Public opinion polls also show
strong opposition to Bush-approved ports plan.
Kolbe is retiring at the end of the year in a district that includes
parts of Tucson as well as Tombstone and Sierra Vista."

"ICEJ NEWS - 04/23/2001
US Representative Jim Kolbe, who chairs the House subcommittee that
oversees American foreign aid, led a congressional delegation to the
region last week. On Thursday, Kolbe held a meeting with Arafat in
Ramallah …
Later, in an interview with THE JERUSALEM POST, Kolbe said… "It is
my view that he" (Arafat) "is fairly desperate now to get back to
the negotiating table." …
Kolbe said that Arafat raised the possibility of simultaneously
starting diplomatic negotiations without preconditions, and issuing
a joint declaration with Israeli Prime Minister Sharon on ending the
violence. Sharon later met with Kolbe and rejected the idea, saying
that Israel wants to see "actions and not declarations." Officials
in Sharon's office have said that Arafat brought up this idea with
Kolbe to try to come up with something constructive in order to get
an invitation to see President George W. Bush at the White House. A
senior aide to Arafat insisted, however, that the idea of making
simultaneous TV appearances to call for an end to the violence came
from Kolbe, and Arafat simply responded "Why not?"

"Say good-by to Jim Kolbe
By Bob Haran, Phoenix
Regarding Congressman Jim Kolbe's decision not to run for
reelection, in a word, "Hallelujah." When someone retires or passes
away, we try to say something nice about that person; we downplay
his negatives and point out his positives. I would like to do the
same for Congressman Jim Kolbe, but I really don't have the time to
do that much research, other then to say, I wholeheartedly approve
of his decision to leave Congress.
I'm sure Kolbe will be missed by Mexican President Vicente Fox,
he is one of the best members of Congress Mexico has ever had in the
United States.
Kolbe was one of the leading members of Congress responsible
for
the passage of NAFTA and CAFTA. NAFTA has resulted in the loss of
thousands of American jobs to Mexico and CAFTA will help export
American jobs to Central America. Kolbe is also a strong supporter
of FTAA, (Free Trade Area of the America's), which will further
lessen American sovereignty, advance globalism and cause the loss of
even more American jobs.
I know that Kolbe's announcement will sadden cheap labor
advocates, drug smugglers and traffickers in human beings.
What Congressman Tom Tancredo is to securing America's borders
and controlling illegal immigration, Kolbe is to open borders and
uncontrolled illegal immigration.
The departure of Kolbe from Congress signifies the beginning of
the removal from office of Members of Congress that are obstructing
the securing of our borders and the enforcement of our immigration
laws. Kolbe may be responsible for exporting American jobs but he
has also helped to import; cheap labor, along with crime and poverty
and the resulting cost to the taxpayer.
Republican social conservatives may be singing, "Happy days are
here again,' on learning of his retirement.
Jim Kolbe is the, only, openly, homosexual Republican in
Congress. Kolbe is not only pro-abortion, he is one of the few
Republicans to vote against the partial birth abortion ban. He will
be surely missed by the gay community and Planned Parenthood.
In Kolbe's announcement, he states that he is, "Confident that
he would win reelection if he chose to run." That statement would be
true if he had no opponent in the Republican primary, but Kolbe did
have a challenger for the GOP nomination for Congress from Southern
Arizona.
Randy Graf, a former member of the Arizona House, had decided
to
challenge Mr. Kolbe for the GOP nomination. Graf's candidacy may
have been the deciding factor in Kolbe's surprise decision, not to
run for reelection, along with the passage of Proposition 200, which
Kolbe had opposed.
Graf is everything Kolbe is not. Where Kolbe has become the
poster boy for illegal immigration, Graf has become the poster boy
for securing America's borders and was a leader behind the passage
of Proposition 200.
Where Kolbe is a pro-abortion liberal, Graf is a solid, pro-
life, social conservative.
It seems that Jim Kolbe was reading the writing on the wall and
figured that he is out of step with Republican voters in Southern
Arizona and that this would be a good time to call it quits."

Congressman Jim Kolbe 8TH DISTRICT ARIZONA PRESS RELEASE

March 8, 2006

KOLBE HAILS FREE TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH MALAYSIA

(Washington, DC) -- Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), a leader in
free trade, today praised United States Trade Representative Rob
Portman for launching formal negotiations aimed at a free trade
agreement between the United States and Malaysia. A free trade
agreement between the two countries will have significant economic
impact in the US. Malaysia is the United States 10th largest
trading partner and the largest US export market among the
Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). The elimination of
barriers will keep the US competitive with other countries such as
China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, which are already
negotiating preferential agreements with Malaysia. In particular,
Arizona will benefit significantly from this agreement."Arizona
ranks as the fourth largest state exporter to Malaysia with $750
million in exports in 2005," said Rep. Kolbe. "This agreement will
allow us to create more jobs at home and bring US products – many of
which are made in southern Arizona – to other parts of the world."
Malaysia has been a key ally and partner in the war against
terrorism and is an important part of the Islamic world. Malaysia
is also a leader in promoting regional defense cooperation with the
United States in Southeast Asia. "A free trade agreement with
Malaysia is about more than economics. By opening the markets, we
will build on our already strong bilateral relationship with
Malaysia," added Kolbe

"Ex-intel officer pleads guilty in exports
By Seth Hettena, Associated Press Writer | October 18, 2005
SAN DIEGO—A former Navy intelligence officer pleaded guilty Tuesday
to illegally exporting military aircraft parts overseas, saying he
acted on behalf of a convicted Pakistani arms dealer.
·
George Charles Budenz II, a retired commander, said he shipped
engine parts for F-5 fighters, T-38 military trainers and Chinook
helicopters to Malaysia and Belgium without a U.S. State Department
permit.
Investigators said the F-5 parts may have wound up in Iran, a
country that Budenz has visited.
Budenz, 57, had faced a 30-year prison term, but prosecutors said
they would recommend up to 6 ½ years under a plea agreement when he
is sentenced in January. Budenz surrendered his passport and was
freed on $35,000 bond.
In court, Budenz admitted he made the air freight shipments in
December 2004 and January 2005 at the direction of Arif Ali Durrani.
Last month, Durrani pleaded not guilty to conspiring to illegally
export military aircraft engine parts to the United Arab Emirates,
Malaysia and Belgium.
Prosecutor William Cole, speaking to reporters, declined to say
whether Budenz had agreed to cooperate with the Durrani
investigation.
"Mr. Durrani was the mastermind of this conspiracy and Mr. Budenz,
he was the lieutenant or the facilitator in getting these products
out of the United States," said Serge Duarte, the agent in charge of
Immigration and Customs Enforcement's San Diego office.
While investigators have yet to determine what happened to the
parts, Duarte said, "it's conceivable these parts could have gone to
Iran or other parts of the world."
Investigators have not recovered the parts that Budenz shipped
overseas.
Defense attorney Thomas P. Matthews said his client had a stamp in
his passport showing he had visited Iran, but the attorney was not
sure when the trip took place and said no evidence has been
presented showing Budenz had sold weapons there.
Durrani's attorney, Moe Nadim, has said Budenz did not sell aircraft
parts in Iran at his client's instruction.
Budenz served in the U.S. Navy for more than 25 years, most of the
time as a reserve intelligence officer with postings all over the
world.
A third man, Richard Tobey, pleaded guilty in August to conspiring
to violate U.S. arms export control laws and said Durrani instructed
him to send a T-38 cockpit canopy to the United Arab Emirates."

Malaysian PM urges Muslims to unite against `Jewish domination'
PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
on Thursday told a summit of Islamic leaders that "Jews rule the
world by proxy" and the world's 1.3 billion Muslims should unite,
using nonviolent means for a "final victory."
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad delivers his speech as
chairman of the 10th Session of the Organization of the Islamic
Conference.
By B.K.Bangash, AP
His speech at the Organization of the Islamic Conference summit,
which he was hosting, drew criticism from Jewish leaders, who warned
it could spark more violence against Jews.
Mahathir — known for his outspoken, anti-Western rhetoric —
criticized what he described as Jewish domination of the world and
Muslim nations' inability to adequately respond to it.
"The Europeans killed 6 million Jews out of 12 million, but today
the Jews rule the world by proxy," Mahathir said, opening the
meeting of Islamic leaders from 57 nations. "They get others to
fight and die for them."
Malaysia, a democratic nation which has a large non-Muslim
population and does not enforce strict Islamic law, has long been a
critic of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and of U.S.
policy in the Middle East, including the war in Iraq and
Washington's strong backing of the Jewish state.
Mahathir, 77, who is retiring on Oct. 31, has used almost every
international podium to lambaste the West for two decades, winning a
reputation as an outspoken champion of Third World causes.
"For well over half a century we have fought over Palestine. What
have we achieved? Nothing. We are worse off than before," he
said. "If we had paused to think, then we could have devised a plan,
a strategy that can win us final victory."
The prime minister, who has turned his country into the world's 17th-
ranked trading nation during his 22 years in power, said
Jews "invented socialism, communism, human rights and democracy" to
avoid persecution and gain control of the most powerful countries.
Mahathir added that "1.3 billion Muslims cannot be defeated by a few
million Jews," but he suggested using political and economic tactics
instead of violence.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Jonathan Peled expressed
disappointment in the remarks but said he wasn't surprised.
"It is not new that in such forums there is always an attempt to
reach the lowest common denominator, which is Israel bashing," he
said in Jerusalem. "But obviously we'd like to see more moderate and
responsible kind of declarations coming out of such summits."
Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center
in Los Angeles, said Mahathir has used anti-Israel statements in the
past to prove he's tough on the West. But, he said, Thursday's
speech was still worrisome.
"What is profoundly shocking and worrying is the venue of the
speech, the audience and coming in the time we're living in," Cooper
said during a visit to Jerusalem. "Mahathir's speech today is an
absolute invitation for more hate crimes and terrorism against Jews.
That's serious."
U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia Marie Huhtala declined to comment on
Mahathir's speech. Washington was angered over a speech he made in
February, as host of the Non-Aligned Movement of 117 countries, in
which he described the looming war against Iraq as racist.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai said he supported Mahathir's analysis,
which also included steps for how Muslim nations can develop
economically and socially.
"It is great to hear Prime Minister Mahathir speak so eloquently on
the problems of the ummah (Muslim world) and ways to remedy them,"
Karzai said. "His speech was an eye-opener to a lot of us and that
is what the Islamic world should do."
The summit is the first since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks
reshaped global politics and comes at a time when many Muslims —
even U.S. allies — feel the war on terrorism has become a war
against them.
"It is well known that the Islamic community is being targeted today
more than at any other time before in its creed, culture and social
and political orientation," said Qatar's ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin
Khalifa al-Thani, who hosted the U.S. headquarters in the Iraq war.
The status of Iraq also proved a divisive issue. Malaysia resisted
inviting the U.S.-picked Iraqi Governing Council, describing it as a
puppet of American occupation. But Arab countries that have
recognized the interim body prevailed and council representatives
were attending the summit.
Leaders attending the summit included Jordan's King Abullah, Syrian
President Bashar Assad, Morocco's King Mohammed VI, Pakistani
President Pervez Musharraf and Indonesian President Megawati
Sukarnoputri.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Philippine President Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo are attending as special observers because of their
large Muslim minorities.
Excerpts from speech

Excerpts from Malaysian prime minister's speech at Islamic leaders'
summit:"Our only reaction is to become more and more angry. Angry
people cannot think properly. And so we find some of our people
acting irrationally. They launch their own attacks, killing just
about everybody including fellow Muslims to vent their anger and
frustration.""There is a feeling of hopelessness among the Muslim
countries and their people. They feel they can do nothing right.
They believe that things can only get worse.""But is it true that we
should do and can do nothing for ourselves? Is it true that 1.3
billion people can exert no power to save themselves from the
humiliation and oppression inflicted on them by a much smaller
enemy? Is there no other way than to ask our young people to blow
themselves up and kill people and invite the massacre of more of our
own people?""We are actually very strong. 1.3 billion people cannot
be simply wiped out. The Europeans killed 6 million Jews out of 12
million, but today the Jews rule the world by proxy. They get others
to fight and die for them."

"Dubai threat to hit back By Roxana Tiron
Dubai is threatening retaliation against American strategic and
commercial interests if Washington blocks its $6.8 billion takeover
of operations at several U.S. ports. As the House Appropriations
Committee yesterday marked up legislation to kill Dubai Ports
World's acquisition of Britain's Peninsular and Oriental Steam
Navigation (P&O), the emirate let it be known that it is preparing
to hit back hard if necessary.A source close to the deal said
members of Dubai's royal family are furious at the hostility both
Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill have shown toward the
deal."They're saying, `All we've done for you guys, all our
purchases, we'll stop it, we'll just yank it,'" the source
said.Retaliation from the emirate could come against lucrative deals
with aircraft maker Boeing and by curtailing the docking of hundreds
of American ships, including U.S. Navy ships, each year at its port
in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the source added. It is not clear
how much of Dubai's behind-the-scenes anger would be followed up by
action, but Boeing has been made aware of the threat and is already
reportedly lobbying to save the ports deal. The Emirates Group
airline will decide later this year whether it will buy Boeing's new
787 Dreamliner or its competitor, Airbus A350. The airline last fall
placed an order worth $9.7 billion for 42 Boeing 777 aircraft,
making Dubai Boeing's largest 777 customer.Dubai in mid-February
also established the Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, a $15 billion
investment to create a company that will lease planes, develop
airports and make aircraft parts to tap into growing demand for air
travel in the Middle East and Asia. The family-ruled sheikhdom may
buy as many as 50 wide-body aircraft from Boeing and Airbus during
the next four years, according to Aerospace Enterprise officials. The
UAE military also bought Boeing's Apache helicopters. Meanwhile,
Boeing has been in talks with the emirates to try to sell its AWACS
planes. An industry official with knowledge of Boeing's contracts
with Dubai said that the company has been involved in the emirate
and that it would take a lot "to knock" those relationships."Nothing
about the [ports] controversy diminishes our commitment to the
region," said John Dern, Boeing's corporate spokesman. He added that
at this point the company has no indication that there is or will be
an impact on the company.Any repercussion to Boeing could put House
Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) in a delicate position. Boeing's
decision to move its headquarters to Chicago has been seen as
calculated to facilitate a close relationship with Hastert. He is
against the ports deal, and his office did not return calls by press
time.Several businesses have expressed concern that the controversy
over the $6.8 billion ports deal could damage trade with the UAE.
Dubai is one of the seven emirates. The United States and the UAE
are meeting next week for a fourth round of talks to sign a free-
trade agreement. The American Business Group of Abu Dhabi, which has
no affiliation with the U.S. government, said that Arabs may
hesitate to invest into the United States, according to a report by
Reuters.A Republican trade lobbyist said that because the ports deal
is a national-security issue blocking it would not be in violation
of World Trade Agreement rules."In terms of them retaliating legally
against the U.S. … I don't think there are many options there," the
lobbyist said. But when it comes to the emirates' cooperation in the
war on terrorism and in intelligence gathering, there is concern
that some help may be pulled."If we reject the company in terms of
doing the [ports] work, they are going to lose a lot of face. In the
Arab culture, losing face is a big deal," a former government
official said. "We risk losing that help. It is not an empty
threat."Dubai is a critical logistics hub for the U.S. Navy and a
popular relaxation destination for troops fighting in the Middle
East. On many occasions since the ports story erupted, the Pentagon
has stressed the importance of the U.S-UAE relationship.Last year,
the U.S. Navy docked 590 supply vessels in Dubai, plus 56 warships,
Gordon England, deputy secretary of defense, said in a Senate
hearing last month. About 77,000 military personnel went on leave in
the UAE last year, he added.During the hearing, he warned about the
implications of a negative decision on the ports deal: "So obviously
it would have some effect on us, and I'd not care to quantify that,
because I don't have the facts to quantify it. It would certainly
have an effect on us."Although owned by the Dubai government, the
company at the heart of this controversy, Dubai Ports World, is
trying to distance itself from any kinds of threats, said a lobbyist
closely tracking the deal.Another lobbyist monitoring the
controversy said K Street still believes there will be a compromise
that allows the Dubai deal to go through while meeting congressional
security concerns, even though a bill aimed at that result, put
forward by House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King (R-
N.Y.), was widely repudiated amongst lawmakers Tuesday.Senate
leaders have indicated that they would wait to take action until the
new 45-day Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States
(CFIUS) review is completed.Meanwhile, in London, DP World cleared
the last hurdle for its take over of P&O. The Court of Appeal in
London refused Miami-based Eller & Co., which opposed the deal,
permission to appeal against clearances for the legal and financial
measures necessary to implement the takeover.P&O said it expects to
file the requisite court orders, making the takeover terms binding
on DP World, according to the Financial Times.Elana Schor
contributed to this report."

"March 14, 2003
WASHINGTON - … Rep. Eric I. Cantor of the 7th District, who belongs
to the House GOP leadership and is the chamber's lone Jewish
Republican. Cantor quickly heightened his political profile in
Washington this week as he condemned Moran's recent remarks and went
further.
Cantor immediately called on the Democratic Party to "clean up its
own house" and pointed to the Senate Republicans' deposing of then-
leader Trent Lott in December….Cantor, meanwhile, has become the
chief focus of an effort to let American Jews know that they can
find a home in the Republican Party, one GOP strategist said.
The Moran episode elevated Cantor's visibility to Jewish
organizations nationally and put him in a position to point out
Democrats' remarks, said the strategist, who added that he would not
be surprised to see Cantor active in President Bush's re-election
campaign.
On Wednesday, Cantor urged the House Democratic leadership to remove
Moran from seats on the influential Appropriations and Budget
committees.
He said in a statement that he found the premise of Moran's
thinking "frighteningly similar" to the "Protocols of the Elders of
Zion," which he called "hate-filled czarist tomes" from Russia
centuries ago.
Before a group of Orthodox Jewish leaders from around the nation
Wednesday, Cantor used similar language. He introduced House
Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, to the group. DeLay said the
Democratic Party "appears to countenance remarks like those made by
Representative Moran in the past few weeks."
Cantor, a second-term congressman and chief deputy majority whip,
said yesterday he was just speaking "from the heart" in responding
to Moran's remarks.
He noted that the meeting with the Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America had been scheduled well in advance.
"There's no particular political strategy," said Cantor political
adviser Ray Allen Jr. Allen said "everybody in the world" telephoned
for Cantor's reaction to Moran's remarks, and Cantor "spoke out in a
responsible manner. That's about the size of it."
Moran …has said he plans to fight for re-election. That is despite a
letter Wednesday by six Jewish Democrats in the House saying Moran
should not run again.

Moran told Roll Call newspaper, a Capitol Hill publication,
that "I'm not going to be intimidated. . . . It's unhealthy for the
American political process for any group within our society to be
able to decide who should and shouldn't represent a constituency."
David Bernstein, Washington director for the American Jewish
Committee, said Moran again raised " the canard of Jewish control"
in suggesting that "one group - the Jewish community - will decide
who represents his district."
Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, R-11th, who has worked closely with the
Northern Virginia Democrat, declined to answer directly yesterday
when asked whether Moran's effectiveness has been diminished.
"I'm still returning his calls," Davis said. "We honor the voters'
choice in this. I think whatever political fallout there is, we'll
find out over the next few months."
In a separate development, Secretary of State Colin Powell rejected
any suggestion that the Bush administration's confrontation with
Iraq was driven by Israel or American Jews.
The drive to disarm Iraq dates back to the end of the Persian Gulf
War and covers two administrations and 12 years of U.N. resolutions,
he told a House Appropriations subcommittee.
"It is driven by our own national interest," Powell said in response
to a question by the subcommittee chairman, Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz.
Kolbe mentioned recent media commentary and asked Powell to
state "the actual origins of our Iraq policy."

PROHIBITING UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATIONS
Mr. WYDEN. Mr. President, today I rise to say the national
antiterrorism legislation passed by this body is in grave danger of
being rendered useless. The bill passed by this body corrected an
immediate and severe impediment to the undercover investigations
that
must be employed to shut down terrorism in our Nation. The
antiterrorism bill passed by this body included legislation
introduced
by Senator Leahy, Senator Hatch, and myself that would untie the
hands
of Federal prosecutors in my home State of Oregon and remove the
roadblocks that currently all but prohibit undercover investigations
there.
Unfortunately, the antiterrorism legislation passed by the House
strips that provision and rips back open the enormous loophole that
potentially makes Oregon a safe haven for dangerous criminals and
terrorists everywhere.
For
more than a year now, State and Federal prosecuting attorneys in
Oregon have been legally prohibited from advising or participating
in
law enforcement undercover investigations. Without advice of
counsel,
law enforcement operatives cannot conduct wiretaps, sting
operations,
or infiltrate dangerous criminal operations. Covert investigations
in
my State have been shut down for more than a year. If the Senate
does
not insist on antiterrorism language to restart these investigations
in
Oregon, the national antiterrorism legislation will not be national
at
all; it will cover 49 States and it will give dangerous criminals,
including terrorists, not just a license but practically an engraved
invitation to set up shop in Oregon with little fear of detection or
apprehension through undercover or covert methods. It would
endanger,
not just the people of my State but all Americans.
I wish to explain briefly how this situation came about. It started
here in Washington in 1998. An amendment to the omnibus
appropriations
bill started the ball rolling in Washington, DC. A McDade-Murtha
amendment required Federal prosecutors to abide by the State ethics
laws and rules in the State in which they work. In Oregon, the State
bar association enacted a disciplinary rule making it unethical for
attorneys to take part in any practice involving "deceit or
misrepresentation of any
kind."
When an Oregon attorney misrepresented his identity to investigate a
claim, the State supreme court found him guilty of an ethics
violation.
The McDade-Murtha amendment backed that up. It became very clear no
matter how vital the investigation, no matter how great the need, no
matter how dangerous the criminals, attorneys—including Federal,
State, and
[[Page S10677]]
local prosecutors—are simply absolutely not allowed to take a single
step, not even to give advice, to help in an undercover
investigation.
If an undercover investigator cannot get advice from a Federal,
State,
or local prosecutor, that undercover investigator cannot go forward.
It
is that simple: no wiretaps, no sting operations, no infiltrating or
gathering information on any criminal group no matter how dangerous
their bent or how dastardly their plans… The terrorists
made their homes in Florida and New Jersey before
striking Americans in New York and Virginia. I don't want to find 6
months from now that the terrorists made their homes in Oregon
because
this body failed in its resolve to shut them down in every State in
our
country. Leaving one State vulnerable makes each State in this
country
vulnerable.
I implore the conferees, and indeed the Congress, to act swiftly and
judicially to guarantee that our
Federal prosecutors and investigators
have these essential tools that they have asked us to support on a
bipartisan basis so they can conduct covert operations that are that
are
necessary to prevent and prosecute criminals in terrorist acts."

UAE served as transfer point for nuclear weapons, Hunter charges By
Roxana Tiron
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) isn't buying repeated assurances from
President Bush and Pentagon officials that the United Arab Emirates
is a key ally of the United States, and therefore the deal giving a
UAE-owned company control of six U.S. ports poses no threat.Numerous
lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are fuming over the
administration's approval of a $6.8 billion deal to allow Dubai
Ports World to take over significant operations at six U.S. ports
without a thorough investigation and without consulting Congress.
Administration officials from the Pentagon to the Department of
Homeland Security have insisted on numerous occasions that the deal
did not pose any national security threats. But Hunter, chairman of
the House Armed Services Committee, during a hearing on Thursday
insisted otherwise, calling the United Arab
Emirates "accommodators." "They accommodate people who come
with lots of money," Hunter said, adding that UAE has not been a
consistent supporter of the United States. According to Hunter,
Dubai, one of the emirates, played a key role as a transfer point in
the trade of nuclear weapons. In 2003, over U.S. protests, Hunter
said UAE customs officials allowed 66 American high-speed electrical
switches, which are ideal for detonating nuclear weapons, to be sent
to a Pakistani businessman with longstanding ties to the Pakistani
military. In another incident, he said 70 tons of heavy water, a
component for nuclear reactors, was sent from China to Dubai. The
shipping labels were then changed to mask the transaction, and 60
tons of the heavy water was forwarded to India, where it enabled the
government to use its energy-producing reactors to create plutonium
for its atomic weapons program, Hunter charged. Two containers of
gas centrifuge parts from the Pakistani head of a weapons-of-mass-
destruction ring, A. Q. Khan's, were shipped through Dubai to Iran
for about $3 million worth of UAE. currency, Hunter added."They [the
U.A.E] is not interested in who it is, as long as they get to be the
bazaar," Hunter said. "They are an international player who can't be
ignored because of their size, money and strategic location. [But]
those are people you do not want close to the security
apparatus."During the same hearing, Edward Bilkey, the CEO of Dubai
Ports World, attempted to make an impassioned appeal to lawmakers
about his U.S. roots.Bilkey grew up in New Jersey and boasts ties to
former Sen. Joseph Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.), who was the chairman of
the committee on coast defenses and was a cousin of Rep. Rodney
Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.)."In every generation from the founding of the
United States to today, members of my family have served in the
Senate, House of Representatives or as Secretary of State," Bilkey
said in prepared remarks.A former officer in the U.S. Navy, Bilkey
said he personally "set in motion" the arrangements for the first
aircraft carrier to enter the port of Jebel Ali in Dubai "solving a
major logistics problem for the Navy" during the first Gulf War.He
also said that DP World's senior management is from the United
States, Britain, India, Netherlands and Dubai."Our board chairman, a
citizen of Dubai, went to Temple University. Our Chief Executive
Officer also a citizen of Dubai, is a graduate of the University of
Arizona," Bilkey said."

"Overflow Crowd Hears Murtha, Moran Speak on War
Friday January 06, 2006

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Emotions ran high at a public forum on the war
in Iraq hosted by northern Virginia Congressman Jim Moran.
Some 500 packed the auditorium in Arlington, as well as an overflow
room, spilling onto the street.
Moran has been an outspoken critic of the war. His guest speaker was
fellow Democratic Congressman John Murtha of Pennsylvania who
renewed his call for an immediate pullout.
Pentagon officials have criticized Murtha, accusing him of sending
the wrong message to troops and hurting recruiting efforts."
So who is Jim Moran?
"Moran steps down from leadership post
Lawmaker under fire for saying Jews push war with Iraq
Friday, March 14, 2003
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Harshly criticized for saying pressure from the
Jewish community was driving the push toward a possible war against
Iraq, Rep. James Moran stepped down Friday as a House Democratic
regional whip.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California issued a
statement indicating she left Moran, D-Virginia, with little choice
but to give up his leadership post.
"I have taken this action because Congressman Moran's irresponsible
remarks were a serious mistake," Pelosi said in a statement. "As I
said earlier this week, his comments were not only inappropriate,
they were offensive and have no place in the Democratic Party."
Moran has been under fire since March 3, when he said at an antiwar
forum that Jewish leaders were pushing a war with Iraq.
"If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for
this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this," he said at the
forum in Reston, Virginia. "The leaders of the Jewish community are
influential enough that they could change the direction of where
this is going and I think they should."
The comments drew condemnation from the White House, Jewish leaders,
and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle….The controversy over
Moran's remarks
has been compared by some to
the firestorm generated when Sen. Trent Lott, R-Mississippi appeared
to express nostalgia for segregation during a December birthday
party for former Sen. Strom Thurmond. Under pressure, Lott stepped
down as Senate majority leader, but he remains in the Senate.
On Wednesday, a number of Jewish House Democrats urged Moran not to
seek re-election in the wake of his comments. In Virginia, several
local Democrats have already expressed interest in challenging Moran
for re-election.
The leader of the Jewish Community Council of Washington said Moran
should consider resigning. Moran, 57, has said he will not give up
his seat.
The Anti-Defamation League was also among those that condemned
Moran's comments.
"This is one voice in the chorus spreading a new lie, the age-old
anti-Semitic canard that when our country faces danger, Jews are
responsible," it said.
"As we move closer to an invasion with Iraq, the drumbeat of `blame
the Jews'—meaning Jews in the administration, the `Jewish lobby' and
the Jewish community—is intensifying and multiplying.
"Congressman Moran's remarks are symptomatic of a more serious
problem—that in times of crisis and anxiety, Jews continue to be a
convenient and tempting option for scapegoating."

"If any one of these groups—the British, the Jewish, or the
administration—stops agitating for war, I believe there will be
little danger of our involvement."
Charles Lindbergh- September 11, 1941-Des Moines, Iowa
In 1936, Charles Lindbergh "inspected" Germany's military aviation
program…
In August of 1936 Charles Lindbergh attended the Summer Olympic
Games in Berlin as a guests of Nazi Hermann Goering, the head of the
Luftwaffe. Impressed by German industry and society under Adolf
Hitler, the Lindberghs considered moving to Berlin.
In 1938, Goering presented Lindbergh with the Service Cross of the
German Eagle for his contributions to aviation. Returning to America
in 1939, Lindbergh became an advocate of American isolationism, but
was criticized for his Nazi sympathies and anti-Semitic beliefs.
Charles Lindbergh with ReichsmarshallHerman Goering in Berlin, 1938.
Goering decorated Lindbergh at a state dinner with the
Verdienstkreuz der Deutscher Alder(Service Cross Of The German
Eagle), one of the highest Nazi civilian medals, by order of Adolph
Hitler. This event signalled the beginning of the end of Lindbergh's
huge international popularity.
Lindbergh (at Goering's invitation) visited Nazi Germany four times
since 1936. He openly admired the discipline, intellect,
organization, and strength of the Nazis, and their views on the
traditional role of women. Lindbergh despised the "degeneracy of
Swing Era America" he had nothing good to say about "African Jazz",
or even of dancing. In a Reader's Digest article, he warned
against "the infiltration of inferior blood" into the American
racial makeup. He criticized the American ideal of "universal
equality." Hitler gave his architect Albert Speer carte blanche to
build a permanent residence for the Lindbergh family in Berlin…..
Charles Lindbergh urged America to shun aid to Europe. He suggested
that America ally with Hitler. He was "convinced that Adolph
Hitler... held the future of Europe in his hands, and maybe of
civilization, too." The final straw for Americans was Charles
Lindbergh's 1941 speech in Des Moines, accusing Jews of pushing
America towards war.
A tidal wave of rebuke immediately followed. The Lafayette
Restaurant in NYC removed their large "Lindbergh Flag" from its
wall. TWA's "Lindbergh Line" of commercial aircraft (which Lindbergh
helped create) had his name painted out on all the planes. Little
Falls, Minnesota (his birthplace) took down its "Home Of Charles
Lindbergh" billboard. Pamphlets and articles appeared: "Is Lindbergh
a Nazi?" and "Lindbergh And The Jews." Amidst the anti-Lindbergh
fervor from virtually every previous supporter, Lindbergh resigned
his Air Force commission…."
"Lindbergh's Public Statements Were More Troubling Than His Private
Affairs
by Dr. Rafael Medoff

The revelation that famed aviator Charles Lindbergh had a German
mistress and fathered three children with her has attracted much
media attention in recent days. The public is always fascinated by
the discovery of celebrities' moral indiscretions. But Lindbergh's
public activities were far more troubling than his private affairs….
after Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Germany… Charles Lindbergh..
was becoming an apologist for the Nazi regime. Lindbergh declared in
1936 that Hitler had "done much for the German people," and he
attended that year's Olympic games in Berlin as the personal guest
of Hitler's air force chief, Field Marshal Hermann Goering. At an
official state dinner in October 1938, Goering, acting "by order of
the Furrier," presented Lindbergh with a prestigious medal, the
Service Cross of the German Eagle.
Even after the Nazis' Kristallnacht pogrom, and even after Hitler's
dismemberment of Czechoslovakia and annexation of Austria, Lindbergh
continued to make excuses for the Nazis. "Germany has pursued the
only consistent policy in Europe in recent years," he wrote in an
April 1939 diary entry, refusing to acknowledge the evil nature of
the Hitler regime. "The question of right and wrong is one thing by
law and another thing by history."
During 1939-1941, Lindbergh emerged as the most prominent public
spokesman for America First, the extreme isolationist group that
opposed any U.S. action against Hitler.
In a radio address on October 13, 1939, barely six weeks after
Hitler's armies had devastated Poland, triggering World War II,
Lindbergh blamed the British and French for the war…. Despite the
German conquest of Norway, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, and France in
1940, Lindbergh refused to reconsider his perspective. "Nothing is
to be gained by shouting names and pointing the finger of blame
across the ocean,"… Perhaps the most infamous of Lindbergh's
speeches was the one he delivered at an America First rally in Des
Moines, Iowa, on September 11, 1941. He accused "the Jews"
of "pressing this country toward war," and complained about what he
called "their large ownership and influence in our motion pictures,
our press, our radio and our government." He also implicitly
threatened American Jews, declaring: "Instead of agitating for war,
the Jewish groups in this country should be opposing it in every
possible way for they will be among the first to feel its
consequences…. Criticism of Lindbergh's Nazi apologetics was
widespread. Interior Secretary Harold Ickes called him "the number
one fellow-traveler of the Nazis in the United States." Time
magazine reported that with Lindbergh's speech, "the America First
Committee had touched the pitch of anti-Semitism and its fingers
were tarred." Residents of Lindbergh's hometown, Little Falls,
Minnesota, removed his name from their water tower…"

"The most recent complaint about Mr. Moran among many Democrats
concerns a remark he made last year blaming Jewish Americans for the
war in Iraq.
"If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community
for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this," he said at a
gathering of antiwar activists in Reston a year ago. "The leaders of
the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change
the direction of where this is going, and I think they should."
The remark brought a stinging rebuke from reliable Democratic
organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League, which called the
comment "pure, unadulterated anti-Semitism."
"That's only the latest in a string of inappropriate statements
and actions the congressman has made," Mr. Rosenberg said
yesterday. "The people of Northern Virginia are aware of his
background. They know, as a member of Congress, he has repeatedly
displayed bad judgment and that has undercut his effectiveness."
Past scandals involving Mr. Moran include a questionable loan by
a bank that had pending legislation before Congress. He also has a
penchant for fistfights, including a famous 1995 tussle on the floor
of the House with Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, California
Republican.
After his remark blaming Jews for the war, Mr. Moran was
stripped of his post as regional whip for members of Mid-Atlantic
states and asked by several Democratic House members not to run for
re-election in the fall."
http://washingtontimes.com/national/20040326-121704-3581r.htm
"On the eve of World War II," (Hitler) "publicly threatened the Jews
of Europe during a speech in Berlin: "In the course of my life I
have very often been a prophet, and have usually been ridiculed for
it. During the time of my struggle for power it was in the first
instance only the Jewish race that received my prophecies with
laughter when I said that I would one day take over the leadership
of the State, and with it that of the whole nation, and that I would
then among other things settle the Jewish problem. Their laughter
was uproarious, but I think that for some time now they have been
laughing on the other side of their face. Today I will once more be
a prophet: if the international Jewish financiers in and outside
Europe should succeed in plunging the nations once more into a world
war, then the result will not be the Bolshevizing of the earth, and
thus the victory of Jewry, but the annihilation of the Jewish race
in Europe!"
Hitler intended to blame the Jews for the new world war he was soon
to provoke. That war began in September 1939…"
