Thank you very much!
Yes, we have acess to fresh fish, but afraid we are not good enough in
using it. Although, we love fresh salmon and shrimps....

There is hidden sugar in so much, in things you wouldn`t expect at
all. Even in bread...although, as low carbs we don`t eat bread. But my
kids do.
Here in the house we have no premade food, all is made from the
bottom. I work full time, so sometimes it is a chellenge. But easier
as many thinks.
I have joined a norwegian low carb site, where there is a great forum.
One guy in there has bought something called a laptop foodbox, and
that is great! He made a page of what he packs for lunch with
pictures, really great. I would like to share it in here, it is on
norwegian tho. But I think you can get some ideas as well!
Those pictures where there is bread in the box, is the food he made
for his kids.
http://www.vgb.no/20515/

It is really fun to see how this way of eating has effect on my hubbys
diabetic. He is otherwise healthy, has been diabetic for over 10 years
now. But that he is able to cut down on so much insulin is great, now
we know that he doesent just slowly has to wait for it to come, you
can actually take action yourself! He has always been careful, but he
always was told from doctors and the diabetesgroup that he need
carbs!!! We prove them wrong now.
He used to go to karateexercising, but hasent in a while. No time, and
alot of things in the way. But we do go for a walk in the evening or
day now and then, when we feel like it. He is a slim person, has no
overweight at all. That is a good thing.

Thanks for the links.... I "eat" any information theese days.....lol
I will check them out. What we do now, is an Atkins like diet.

Today I made meatballs, with no breadcrumbs in. From the bottom. To
that we had tomato (not the best...)sallad with onion, avocado,
mozzarello, cucumber and herbs, all coverd with balsamico and olive
oil. We also had a canned bean sallad, green beens with a vinagrette
and chrisp fried and chopped bacon over....all liked it.
I made alot of those meatballs, put them in the freezer. Easy lunches
or dinners later.

Keep water in the fridge, maybe with a lemon or limeslice in it?
I drink water when I am thirsty. That is the best I think....
When you are on low carb, the sweet tooth goes away, you dont have the
desire for those sodas and so on.
At least thats the case with me....
But I was never a sodadrinker, never liked it really...

Good luck!

OK, Here it is for anyone who wants to read through it all. :-) I hope
my journey will inspire you. Be dedicated, perservere, tell the people
who tell you "LC is bad for you" to kiss your a** like i did. And
realize that even teh "best of us" fall off the wagon sometimes. Don't
let it get you down like I did, but realize you are only hurting
yourself. Don't let it get out of control like I did. If you do, as
soon as you realize it, pick youself up and climb back on taht wagon!
:-p

Vanessa did a story on me about a year ago, and anyone who wants to read
that and see the before and after pics can go here:
http://www.shapefit.com/success-stories-weight-loss-sue.html.
Unfortunately, as the following story will show, even those with great
advice and will power fall off the wagon.

You can also see my website at www.ferret-kingdom.com (if it won't
come up, please try again tomorrow - we are having server issues
tonight! :-( ARGH! sometimes it sucks runnign your own server!). On
my site you can see many pictures of my gradual loss over time. My
"after" picture i was 133, but by early 2006 I was down to 122, where i
stayed until after the wedding. If you take a peek at the wedding
pictures you can see me at that weight.

Anyhoo, October 16, 2004 my now-husband (Chris) and I split up after
dating 6 months, but I won't bore you with that story. A few weeks
later, looking at the pictures from a freinds going-away party and a
halloween party, i realized just how fat i'd become. Chris had given me
some sorry excuses for our break-up, and I began to think that maybe my
weight was really the issue. I was 192 lbs, and determined to lose some
weight.

I early November, I ended up talking to my ex-husband (Jason), who'd
gained a ton of weight after we split up in 1999. I'd not seen him in
many years and we ran into each other at the mall. We'd parted ways
amicably. I couldn't believe it - he looked again like he did the day
we got married my senior year of high school in 1998! He'd lost all the
weight he'd gained previously. I asked him how he did it, and he told
me Low Carb. He and I hung out and talked a bit over the next new
weeks.

He convinced me to give it a shot, although i told him i didn't
understand how one could live without pasta, bread and potatoes (3 of my
favorite foods!). On November 22, 2004, I officially started
low-carbing. I ahd tried to just eat healthy, and had lost a total of 4
lbs in a month, so I started LC at 188. It wasn't really too hard I
discovered, especially having the support of someone who had done it.
He had followed some diet (basically a very strict Atkins - perhaps the
original atkins?) some body builder had done in the late 70's. While it
wasn't hard, i was starving in the beginning, and felt like I ate all
day long! LOL. At least there was lots of things i could still eat.
After the first couple days, once i went into Ketosis, i hardly ate
anything at all! I just really wasn't hungry. Then my appetite leveled
out and i was eating a normal, average amount of food. I didn't buy any
LC books initially, just followed Jason's advice. In early December
though, he vanished again, as he had a habit of doing (one of the many
reasons he's my EX-husband, LOL). After i lost his support, i turned to
LC mailing lists, forums and bought the Atkins book.

December 6th, Chris called me out of the blue. In the course of our
conversation, he told me the real reason he'd broken up with me. It
wasn't all the bull-sh** reasons he'd given me that made no sense. He'd
bought me an engagement ring. Then he freaked out, as we'd not been
together that long. He completely got cold feet, broke up with me
instead of proposing, and took the ring back. I was in shock. I did
not believe him at first. He asked if he could take me out to dinner,
and I told him i'd consent to that, but he'd have to prove the whole
engagment ring thing to me. The next night he showed up at my house
with a dozen roses and a copy of the credit card statment clearly
showing a jewelry store purchase and return a few days later, right
before our break-up. At this point I was only going into week 3 of LC,
and I'd only lost about 6 lbs, so not a hugely noticeable change. He
did notice, however, that my face looked thinner

We started seeing each other again, after a month and a half of being
broken up. Everythign was going great. The day before Christmas Eve,
we went to dinner at Applebees. They had one of those stand-up things
on the table with the desserts on it - they already had my all-time
favorite dessert here, but they had a new one. It sounded so good.
Chris was supportive of me doign low-carb, though he really didn't
understnad it. For some reason i got really upset, really wanting to
try this new dessert and knowign i couldn't. When we got back to my
mom's house, wehre i was living, we went for a walk down to the beach a
few blocks away. There, as we were sitting on a picnic table listening
to the waves and enjoying each others company, he pulled out a beautiful
ring and proposed. I said yes, of course. We planned a long
engagement, and wanted to get married as close to our original first
date as possible. We chose April 8th, 2006 (our first date was April 3,
2004)

I planned a few cheats here and there, but they were strictly planned
for special occasions, and it was to be one meal only, not the whole
day. Like our celebration engagement dinner wiht my whole family in
January. We went to a fondue restaurant i'd wnated to go to for years.
I stayed determined though, cheated just that one meal, and went right
back on plan. I had great determination adn willpower. I was losig
wegiht steadily and at a healthy rate. I didn't work out, but i was a
server, so moved around the restaurant at work all day. In teh spring,
i started rollerblading around the neighborhood. At first, i could only
go down our side street adn back. I quickly worked my way up to
rollerblading a couple of miles a day. In teh summer, when it got too
hot and rained every day (we live in Florida) i joined the YMCA. I went
to teh gym 4-5 days a week, did 1 hour or so of weight lifting and 30
minutes on teh elliptical for cardio. I didn't lose weight quicker, but
dropped inches quicker and toned and firmed up a lot.

In August 2005, Chris bought us both new Harleys for a late 1-yr
anniversary present. That is my after picture - wiht my new harley, at
133 lbs. I had been LC-ing for a mere 9 months, and had lost 55 lbs at
that point. In november, almost exactly a year later, i hit my low of
121.4 lbs. From my breakign point at 192, i'd lost 70 lbs, all but a
mesely 4 lbs done on LC. I maintained between 121 and 123 until after
the wedding. The honeymoon did us in, and we never got back on track
after coming back from an all-inclusive resort where you could eat and
drink all day long, but the choices were not LC ones. I ate partially
LC, but was off teh wagon enough for the weigth to creep back on. By
December 2006 i had gained 30 lbs back and was at 155. I coudln't
beleive I had let that happen, with teh great will power I had had. The
dedication. I felt like a failure suddenly, adn was very miserable and
unhappy with myself. Chris said he loved me just the way i was. He
tough i'd been too thin at 120-something. But i still wondered - What
had I done?

Then I found out i was pregnant in mid-january. At first, i ate really
healthy, then cravings for french fries, sweet tea from McDonalds and
ice cream took over. I started to eat whatever i wanted, because i was
pregnant. At my first docotrs appointment the first friday of march, i
was at 165. The docotr told me he only wanted me to gain a total of 25
lbs, because i was "already overweight". That hurt to hear. It sent me
into even more of a downward spiral. By mid-May, i had gained 30 lbs.
More than the doctor wanted me to gain IN TOTAL for my WHOLE pregnancy,
and i was not even halfway through yet! I also felt like crap. I was
tired all the time, headachy, irritable, and VERY depressed. Depressed
enough that despite pregnancy, i had to go back on medication. Doing
LC, i had been completely taken off my anti-depression meds previously.

Because of teh pregnancy, and getting too much conflicting information
about ketones and pregnancy, i only went back to Semi-LC. I cut out all
refined flour and sugar, and only dropped back to about 100g carbs/day.
High compared to the amount i used to eat, but very low compared ot the
fast food and ice cream and sweet tea i'd been living on for months. I
eat a TON of fruit, but natural sugar in that doesn't bother me. My
blood sugar stay stable. I do not suffer from horrible mood swings.
The depression issues are much better. I am less moody and irritable.
I am not tired all the time (though I now have 2 months left to go, and
normal pregnancy tiredness is kicking in now!). I do still eat
potatoes, at this point, but not daily. I eat a whole-wheat, LC bread
(natures own wheat and fiber or pepperidge farm carb style whole wheat).
if we have pasta, we still do dreamfields.

On days that i have overdone sugar, inadvertently (ate something i
didn't expected to have sugar in it, and found out later it did) or not
(my glucose tolerance test - yuck) i can tell. I have a great sugar
high for about 1/2 an horu, then i get an awful headache and cannot stay
awke no matter what i do. I end up sleeping for like a day and a half
each time (it's happened twice by accident - now i have leanred to ask
if there is any added sugar in stuff when we go out!). I am nto
diabetic, and i passed my gestational diabetes fine as well, even though
i got the same headache and slept for a day and a half. I had that
reaction to all that sugar, and the other two times i felt the same, and
called back the restaurants we ate at later and asked if there was added
sugar in what i ate. Sure enough, ther ewas. I have learned to listen
to my body a lot better now. I'm not sure if it's just becuas ethis is
my second rodeo, or if the pregnancy exaggerates it so much more.
Either way, i know that it isn't worth feeling like crap for 2 days,
having a migraine, or wanting sweets then for 3 days after the incident.
I just stay away from sugar!

Well, that is my story, from start to finish. If you've made it this
far, thanks for reading it. For some reason, i felt like i needed to
share it with folks who both do and don't already know me. I've been
around on these lists for quite some time, except for the 6 months or so
I went into hiatus because i felt so guilty for being "off the wagon".
I didn't want to talk to anyone because I didn't want to admit it at the
time.

Hopefully my story will inspire the newbies to stick with it. Tough out
the hard times. Find what works for YOU. What works for one doesn't
work for eveyrone, so tailor the plan to suit you, within reason of
course. Like, for me, Atkins says you can't have nuts or cottage cheese
during induction. I ate both and had no issues losing, as i wasn't
following Atkins at the time i started. I read all that well after i
was past the 2-week induction. Some poeple however, may have issues
with those off-limits items. You have to see what works for YOU.

My wonderfuly hubby and dad-to-be still thinks i was too think at
120-somehting, but I was happy there. I was looking at odl pictures the
other day, and couldn't beleive the difference between our wedding and
now, just over a year later. Sigh. I cannot wait until after the baby
is born and i can get back to strict LC and hopefully get all the weight
off again! It also makes me feel good to know that my hubby loves me,
no matter what weight i am. He asked me to marry him when i was big.
He actually got married to me when i was tiny. He gained 20 lbs wiht me
after the honeymoon. He gained another 20 lbs with me when i got
pregnant, LOL. Now even he is eating pretty much refined flour and
sugar-free, and so far has lost about 10 lbs. He eats what i cook
generally, and with his new job he even takes his lunch to work
sometimes, so eats less junk at work. He never did LC with me before,
so even that is nice. Find support wherever you can - with
freinds/family, lists, forums, whatever. And clsoe your ears to the
naysayers. Doing LC, i have never felt better in my life!

Welcome to the group, and congrats on quitting smoking. I'd only been smoking
for 10 years, but it was still hard to quit until i got pregnant - then it was
easy because it just made me nauseaus! LOL. On the LC lists, especially ones
like the Low-Carb recipe box on yahoo and plenty of other places on the web,
you'll find lots of great recipes and never have to eat teh same thing over and
over.

Being prepared in advance is teh best way to go too. My husband and I plan
meals for the whole week and buy what we need at teh grocery store when we go
shopping for everything we want to make. I try to always make at least a littel
extra, so at least one of us will have leftovers for the next day for lunch, as
we both take our lunches to wrok most of the time (i do every day, hubby does
most days). I also make up certain things ahead, or in huge batches, like
zucchini lasagna, and freeze the pieces, so they are always available for lunch
or a lazy day dinner.

When i first started LC, i had no idea what a portion size was. Until i started
LC and started measuring things. Now i know well enough that i can eyeball most
things, others i still measure. As you get more into LC, and the hunger starts
to go away, portion control is MUCH easier!

I eat a lot of food it seems in a day. I don't really eat big meals though - i
snack and graze a lot. Always did my entire life. Just now I eat LC stuff, and
because I am pregnant i eat a lot of fruit and veggies (more fruit than i did
pre-pregnancy due to teh carb level) but it's all still pretty low-calorie, so i
only average 1900 calories a day, adn about 100g net carbs. After the baby is
born, i plan to go back to strict LC to lose the 30 lbs i gained back between my
honeymoon and getting pregnant, adn teh 30+ i'll have gained during pregnancy
(have gained about 35 so far, and 30 of that was before i went back to semi-LC.
When i got pregnant i completely fell off the wagon, but before that i was
obviously off enough to have gained 30 lbs back! I have 8 weeks to go in
pregnancy!)

Hi I am new to group chatting. I've been cigarette free for over 6
weeks after smoking for 20+ years and now working on serious weight
loss. 281 pounds and I have been heavy most of my life. Well I have
tried low carb before but fell off the wagon most times because could
not get out of the rut of eating the same thing over and over. Now I
will look up recipes on a weekly basis and prepare in advance.

Basic problem is that I am greedy and my sense of portion is way
off-balance. Whew just posting a little bit takes a bit of the edge
... at least I know that I am not alone. Thanks for listening.

JoAnn,

First, find out which is your favorite kind of water. Bottled, filtered,
tap, etc. Chilled, iced, room temp, warm, etc. Once you know what you like to
drink best, then focus on doing that. For instance, my daughter is going
out for the high school volleyball team and she's been hearing her coach and
her mom talk to her about keeping properly hydrated for the three hours of
practice each day this summer in the heat. I had been sending her off to
practice with two bottles of water in her bag, and she'd been coming home with
two
bottles of water in her bag. So, we had a talk last week about why she wasn't
drinking her water. Well, she said that by the time she went to get a drink
the water wasn't cold anymore. So we talked about how she liked her water
best. She said ice cold. Ok, so the key was we needed to keep her water
colder. So I got her one of those big cooler jugs with a sip straw in the lid
and a handle to carry it, and now, every night she puts in the freezer with
about three inches of water, and before she leaves for practice she fills it
the
rest of the way with water, and she has cold water for her whole practice.

I like my water chilled sometimes, but not too cold. So I keep a glass of
water in the fridge about half full. When I want chilled water, I'll take out
the glass, add a little tap water to keep the water from being too cold and
drink that down. But most of the time, I am perfectly happy with tap water,
so I keep a glass on the kitchen counter, and drink a glass whenever I pass
through the kitchen. I also keep one on the bathroom counter, and drink a
glass whenever I pass through the bathroom. I keep a glass at the computer
which I go fill up when I come here to check my email, and I drink that glass
before I finish. I also keep bottled water in the car and sip while I am
driving.

Find out what works for you. A big glass, a little glass, a coffee type
travel mug, a sipper mug, a glass with a straw? Some folks use a pretty
crystal
glass to make drinking the water special! :)

If you don't like tap water, try a brita filtered pitcher. Or if you can
afford it, buy bottled water by the case. If you really have a hard time with
water, add a little lemon or lime to it, but not too much.

If you find that your prefer your coffee, tea, or diet soda to your water,
then tell yourself that you can't have your cup of coffee or your glass of tea
or your diet soda until you have had at least an equal size portion of water.

I was a major milk drinker before I started low carbing. I never thought
that anything else would become my beverage of choice. I was wrong. Water is
now what I reach for before anything else.

Some folks use the timer on their watch or their cellphone to remind them to
drink water at the top of every hour.

Some folks fill a gallon container and keep it in the fridge and pour their
glasses of water from their so they know how much they are drinking.

Water works wonders on your body. So many aches and pains that I used to
have are gone now that I am keeping my body properly hydrated. Less headaches,
too!

Ok, I didn't mean to write a book. But hopefully you have found some ideas
that will help you get more water.

Happy Hydrating!

Laura :)

I just wanted to welcome you and don't worry about your English, I know
it is 1000 times better than my Norwegian!

Diabetes is increasing all over the world. There seems to be sugar
lurking in most processed foods, or even worse, high fructose corn
syrup. You are lucky to be in Norway where you can get good quality
fresh fish! I have heard of people being able to go completely off
insulin with proper diet and exercise.

It sounds like your husband is on his way to better health.

Wishing you the best,

JoAnn

I know that the only way I can really lose weight and keep it off is
to knock out refined carbs, 'specially sugar and white flour. I have
NOT been doing that lately, and it is slowly creeping back. The
reason it's been so slow coming back is that I've been exercising
religiously.

For anyone who tends to eat when you get ... upset, bored, angry or
uncomfortable. For us, we need to get back in touch with our
bodies. Exercise will increase oxygen to the brain, it will make you
feel muscles you forgot you had, increase your energy, lift your
mood, and generally make life easier. I used to dread going up or
down the stairs in my house, now ... it's like nothing! I
voluntarily take the stairs if I'm in a building or parking
structure, I make it like a challenge. Try exercising on a daily or
at least 4 - 6 times a week basis. Start slow, but in 2 months you
will be amazed at the changes in your body and your mind. Food
becomes less important, less of something to look forward to, and
using your body becomes more of a pleasure. I do cardio and weights,
I've built up some good muscles. I turned 49 this year and feel
better than I have since I was a teenager. I've always had big,
flabby arms (even as a teen!), and for the 1st time in my adult life,
I'm comfortable in sleeveless shirts.

Now, if someone can tell me how much they love to drink water, or how
they manage to drink a lot of water ... that would help me out a lot!

Thanks,

JoAnn

The diabetic"group" or what you would call it, they tell people to eat

insulin. They will not listen to people that have tested this diet on
diabetic persons. So you can assume they are in the hand of the

in Norway, and I find it very intresting. The have started a new

carb and diabetic, that would be intresting!

Welcome to the family, Minna!

Low carbing is excellent for folks who are diabetic.

Have you read Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution? Or Dr. Atkins' Diabetes
Revolution? Two excellent books!

Dr. Bernstein has a Diabetes Solution website too:

http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/

Also, if you need some help with ideas for what to eat, here's a website
with thousands of low carb recipes:

LowCarbRecipeBox : Low Carb Recipe Box
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/lowcarbrecipebox/

You don't have to join the group to look through all the recipes. You can
browse if you like, and there is a search option. If you would like to join
the group, you do get about a dozen low carb recipes sent to you each day.

I have just started on low carb-high fat, so has my hubby, he is a
diabetic, type 1.
What we have noticed, he has been able to reduce his insulin shots
alot. He doesen`t use much speed insulin, just the slow one, reduced.
I am from Norway, so sorry if I write things weird for you here...my
poor english!
What we have seen is that we feel stuffed, and the desire for sweet
things is gone. We feel great!
My hubby didn`t go to the doctor before this, but he messures his
bloodsugar many times a day.
What we have eaten alot is cauliflower mash.
I grate it, put in in the wok, stirfry it and add creamcheese, cream,
salt pepper and so on. This is a great substitute for potatoes, pasta
and so on.
My kids love the food, and we all think its tastefull.
To the mashed cauliflower I serve meat, roasts with creamy sauses and
a sallad. I am working on finding more variarity, I think that is hard.
We will make fishsoup one day, with veggies and lots of fish and
shrimps and of course cream.
For breakfast we have smoked salmon, bacon, eggs, sourcream,
cucumbers.....omeletts, leftovers from dinner yesterday.
We have vacation now, so I wonder how it is to keep it up when we work

and easy dinners when we get home.

Today is my first day too. Started Atkins and did great today. I need to quit
smoking but need to get a few pounds off first. I have about 30 to lose. Put
it all on last year. I had been on Atkins for years but stopped when I moved to
Arizona in 2004 ... not sure why but the weight started creeping up.

probably whereever I feel best. Have always been heavy so it will
be a change. Biggest drawback is I don't get exercise other than
the walking I do here at work.

Welcome to you and your wife too, Grumpy! We're glad to have you as part of
the family.

I think I mentioned that I'm on Atkins.

Exercise is a big issue, and I know I need to get more. I've started
walking in the mornings. I'm hoping that will make a difference.

Happy Low Carbing!

Laura :)
