I would suggest that she take all the information she has and make an
appointment to sit down with her PCP to begin with. The problem with
specialists is that they tend to focus on their area of specialty with
blinders on, and her list of conditions cross different
specialties. Diabetes falls under the endocrinology specialty, liver disease
falls in the gastroenterology specialty, and kidney disease under
nephrology. If it were me, I would try to find a doctor that specializes in
both gastroenterology and endocrinology. If I couldn't find someone like
that, I would go to an internist (internal medicine specialist).

Something people often don't realize is that medicine is not an exact
science. It's called "practicing medicine" for a reason, lol. I say that
tongue-in-cheek, but it is true. She is going to have to take an active
role and be her own advocate in coordinating her medical care, her own "case
manager" so to speak. She needs to do research and educate herself on her
conditions. If her doctor(s) are not willing to cooperate with her, she
needs to find different doctors.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I would ask for a nutritionist appt as soon as possible. Have her ask them
questions before she goes. It should not take many appts as they should know
exactly what to advise her on. I think it would be time and money well spent.

I had to insist on a diabetes education class. Not one dr suggested it.

Most drs are not good at nutrition I find. also a diabetes education class
should help too. As they are well versed and can answer questions. Kidney
disease is common with diabetes.

Good luck and I am glad you are trying to help her.

Whether or not anyone here is familiar with either condition, it's more
important that she listen to her doctors ... who know more about her medical
history than we do.

I know that my sister-in-law had Type 2 and kidney problems ... and has
difficulty balancing what to eat for both. She had been doing low carb until
the kidney problems surfaced ... and that diagnosis changed what she
could/should eat as far as low carbing went. She has found it to be a delicate
balance.

I wouldn't begin to advise on your sister's condition.

Remember that low carb does not mean high protein.

Has she read Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution or Dr. Atkins' Diabetes
Revolution?

I'd start her off with those first.

Darlene,

I would sit down with your daughter about her/ granddaughter health issue. Let
her know that if she continue to eat that way, she and granddaughter would end
up with diabetes, heart disease or any other health problems.

Get your granddaughter into dance, belly dancing or ballet classes or any other
classes. Anther option is to get her into activity or crafts!

Hi

I may have missed some responses to this, so if my suggestion has already
been made, I apologize.

What about sports? If she could find a sport she loves, that might be the
answer. Or dancing lessons? Those are things that might get her interest
and help her get in shape while having fun.

Perhaps your extended family could get together and buy one of these, or a WII
and WII Fit for the whole family for Christmas. Maybe mama would lose some
weight, too. They are loads of fun, and a real workout disguised as fun!

I got my kids a play station and the dance dance revolution mats. Have you
ever tried one of those things? Man they make me sweat just playing them.
We get it out and play as a family from time to time. You can play against
each other so it may be a game for all the kids. It plays hip music and
they have fun dancing to their favorite songs. This is something you can do
with her indoors as well in the winter.

Just my suggestion.

Hi Darlene

Great advice from Suellen. I was thinking the same thing when I read your
message. I'd just say love her, and give her interesting, tasty, and healthy
food to eat when she visits; just presented as a meal or snack -- not as diet
food. It will expose her to healthy choices in a natural way. I like the idea,
too of making a game of some kind of movement/exercise -- but not calling it
that. She's a kid who has been done a disservice, and shouldn't have the burden
of being verbally reminded of it all the time. A good thing too, is that when
she goes through puberty, she may naturally lose some of that fat with the
hormonal changes. I've seen that happen to the daughters of several friends.
That, with your non-judgmental support could really help her; and help her
self-esteen too. Best of luck,

Judy

It may be a good idea to get her in the kitchen with you, prepare a low carb
snack, and talk to her about making these healthy snacks, and about her weight.
no matter who approaches it, it is going to hurt her feelings and make her cry,
but it has to be done. nothing in real until it leaves someones mouth.

Has anyone talked to her about her weight? I was taken to the Dr, not talked to
about it until we got to Dr. Not good.

I would approach this with a talk about how her weight will impact her health,
and approach this all with healthy habits, not weight loss. Exercise is healthy,
talk to her about what she likes and ask her what she wants to do and what would
be an incentive to her.

I agree her mom might be approaching this in a negative way.

HUGS! You are a good grandma to try to help her.

Darlene,

As sad as it is, the reality is ... your daughter will only change when she
wants to change. You can't make her change ... and wanting her to change
... well, you can want it til the cows come home, but it's really out of your
control.

>> am just trying to do some "damage control">>

Um ... you're not really in control of the situation are you? So aren't you
really "interfering"?

>> I
would like to see all of them eat healthier>>

You can certainly lead by example. I would think that they have noticed
that you've lost weight.

You can serve healthy meals when you feed them.

Other than that, your daughter is of age, and she's in charge of her own
life.

Sad as that may be.

Every minute of every day, your granddaughter
is intensely aware of her fat....

Perhaps you would consider the possibility
of your doing as much as possible to
re-focus or re-direct attention
...away from her overweight and under exercise.
Re-focus may allow or encourage her to attain
normal weight as she concentrates elsewhere.

My few suggestion include refocusing:
--to a new or renewed hand craft hobby
--to checking out library books to read
--to a dance, art, singing, or musical class
--to helping others
--to participating in school interest groups
and / or any other specialty activity.
"Network" to find free or low cost options.

Also, she probably has a special idea or wish.

Stickers (her choice) on a char are a great
way to record positive accomplishments!

Charts work for adults, too!! .. .... :)

Very best to you both.

Hiya

Personally speaking (was a fat kid) don't mention the E word. Nothing
put me off more than the E word.

I humbly suggest you be sneaky and inventive.

Maybe make some games up like a hunt around the house and/or garden
(time limits so she ends up running around and not just slowly walking).

A wii?

Best of luck.

I agree but unfortunately her mom is very overweight also and has mostly
been overweight since puberty. I do not see that changing anytime soon.
She has gotten steadily larger over the years. She is now 31. I am just
trying to do some "damage control" and teaching if at all possible but you
are right at her age she has little control over what she eats and does not
eat a very healthy diet in my opinion. The mom (my daughter) has 6 children
and they all eat that way which is not healthy for any of them but so far
the only one with the weight problems is the 10 year old (and the mom) . I
would like to see all of them eat healthier but I do not have much influence
over her. Darlene

Seems to me the "incentive" has to comes from granddaughter's mother and
father.

Your granddaughter doesn't control her own food ... she has people that are
supplying it to her.

Her parents need to clean up what they're feeding her.

All the exercise in the world can't undo a bad diet.

Hi Darlene!
In reading your post, an idea came to my mind; perhaps this may help or
give another avenue for your Granddaughter:
There is a website: _www.FlyLady.net_ (http://www.FlyLady.net) . In turn
there are other associated sites with Fly Lady. One is Saving Dinner which
in turn has a low carb section. Another is Eric & his no excuse
workouts---they're very "sneaky" in getting anyone into the habit of moving aka
exercise. Another part is the "HouseFairy", helping little ones develop good
habits for life.
All of these combine to get people to F (finally)
                                                           L (love)
                                                          Y (yourself)!
Oh how I hope this may motivate and inspire your Granddaughter!
Good Luck!
Betty

Has anyone talked to her about her weight? I was taken to the Dr, not talked to
about it until we got to Dr. Not good.

I would approach this with a talk about how her weight will impact her health,
and approach this all with healthy habits, not weight loss. Exercise is
healthy, talk to her about what she likes and ask her what she wants to do and
what would be an incentive to her.

I agree her mom might be approaching this in a negative way.

HUGS! You are a good grandma to try to help her.
