Hi All,
I haven't been visiting the list in 4 months... because I had my
baby! Thanks to a low-carb diet with lots of support and ideas from
folks on the list, we were able to keep him normal-sized (8 lbs 3oz)
and very healthy. He did get stuck and have to be c-sectioned, but we
managed that ok. His blood sugar was quite stable and he is thriving
and a complete joy. My weight came out great, too - 2 weeks after
giving birth I was back to within 6 pounds of pre-pregnancy weight!
One big challenge was actually after he was born - the hospital had
me on a 'diabetic' menu that was really outrageously loaded with
carbs! Then in the weeks after I got home we had over 20 meals
delivered to us from friends and family! But they tended to be rice-
based casseroles...
Breastfeeding and LC dieting are a little more difficult. The body
craves carbs even more while producing milk. But I'm focusing on just
not gaining any more and once I'm done nursing I will presumably
start to lose again. Also PCOS can greatly diminish milk production,
so we had a rocky start. But got a full supply about 8 weeks after
delivery.
Overall I'd say I had to dump a lot of misinformation and crummy
nutritional guidance during the pregnancy. I had to stick to my guns
and manage my own health a lot of the time.
Anyone considering a LC diet during pregnancy is welcome to contact
me!
Congratulations, Amy, on delivering a healthy baby and staying healthy
during the pregnancy. I also did a low carb pregnancy and delivered a
very healthy baby and gained only a little weight with the baby (I was
already overweight). Since I had gestational diabetes, I was monitored
the entire time with stress testing and by a perinatologist. This baby
was, in fact, my heaviest, longest baby but he was not padded with fat.
I am sure you know what I am talking about. His brothers would always
say, "Whew! That is one strong baby!"
I also did low carb breastfeeding with no problems. I wish I would have
known about low carbing with my other pregnancies!
