Dear Friends,
I'd like to invite all friends to enter the new year with 5 - 15 mins of meditation.
If you like you can use the "World Peace Meditation" or the "Five Minute Miracle"
recordings I've shared with you (links below). The whole idea is to begin the year in a pure
state of consciousness. Let us all practice together at 12:00am or at 6:00am
local time Jan 1st, 2009.
Here now is a beautiful and inspiring story thats perfect for the occasion of the new year.
A friend shared it with me today and I just kept thinking about
it all day and even dreamt of when I took a little afternoon rest!
I feel you will appreciate the message very much as well.

Wishing a Happy New Year each one of you!
Nithya Shanti

A story for the rest of your life

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say,
"Mother, you must come to see the daffodils before they are over."
I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead
"I will come next Tuesday",
I promised a little reluctantly on her third call.

Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy.
Still, I had promised, and reluctantly I drove there.
When I finally walked into my daughter Carolyn's
house I was welcomed by the joyful sounds of happy children.
I delightedly hugged and greeted my grandchildren.

I told my daughter, "Forget the daffodils, Carolyn!
The road is invisible in these clouds and fog, and
there is nothing in the world except you and my grandchildren
that I want to see right now.  I don't want to drive another inch!"

My daughter smiled calmly and said,
"We drive in this weather all the time, mother."

"Well, you won't get me back on the road until it clears,
and then I'm heading for home!" I assured her.

"But first we're going to see the daffodils.
It's just a few blocks," Carolyn said. "I'll drive. I'm used to this."

"Carolyn," I said sternly,

"It's all right, Mother, I promise.
You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience."

So we went!
After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road
and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church,
I saw a hand lettered sign with an arrow that read,

"Daffodil Garden ---->"

We got out of the car, each of us took a child's hand,
and I followed Carolyn down the path.
Then, as we turned a corner, I looked up and gasped.
Before me lay the most glorious sight.
It looked as though someone had taken
a great vat of gold and poured it over the mountain peak
and its surrounding slopes.

The flowers were planted in majestic,
swirling patterns, great ribbons
and swaths of deep orange,
creamy white, lemon yellow, salmon pink,
and saffron and butter yellow.
Each different-colored variety was planted
in large groups so that it swirled
and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue.

There were five acres of flowers!

"Who did this?" I asked Carolyn.
"Just one woman," Carolyn answered.
"She lives on the property. That's her home."
Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house,
small and modestly sitting in the midst of all that glory.

We walked up to the house.
On the patio, we saw a poster.

"Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking"
was the headline.

The first answer was a simple one. "50,000 bulbs," it read.

The second answer was, "One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and one brain."

The third answer was, "Began in 1958."

For me, that moment was a life-changing experience.
I thought of this woman whom I had never met,
who, more than forty years before, had begun,
one bulb at a time, to bring her vision
of beauty and joy to an obscure mountaintop.

Planting one bulb at a time, year after year,
this unknown woman had forever changed
the world in which she lived.
One day at a time, she had created something
of extraordinary magnificence, beauty, and inspiration.

The principle her daffodil garden taught me
is one of the greatest principles of celebration.
That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time.

"It makes me sad in a way," I admitted to Carolyn.
"What might I have accomplished
if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five
or forty years ago and had worked away at it
'one bulb at a time' through all those years?

Just think what I might have been able to achieve!"
My daughter summed up the message of the day
in her usual direct way.

"Start tomorrow," she said.

She was right.
It's so pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays.
The way to make learning a lesson of celebration
instead of a cause for regret is to only ask,
"How can I put this to use today?"

The Daffodil Principle.

Stop waiting.....
 Until your car or home is paid off
 Until you get a new car or home
 Until your kids leave the house
 Until you go back to school
 Until you finish school
 Until you clean the house
 Until you organize the garage
 Until you clean off your desk
 Until you lose 10 lbs.
 Until you gain 10 lbs.
 Until you get married
 Until you get a divorce
 Until you have kids
 Until the kids go to school
 Until you retire
 Until summer
 Until spring
 Until winter
 Until fall
 Until you die...

There is no better time than right now to be happy.
Happiness is a journey, not a destination.
So work like you don't need money.
Love like you've never been hurt,
and, Dance like no one's watching.

If you want to brighten someone's day,
pass this on to someone special (like I did to you!)

Wishing you a beautiful, daffodil day!
Don't be afraid that your life will end,
be afraid that it will never begin.

FIVE WISHES for 2009 WORKSHEET

Here is a valuable guide to asking five questions to clarify your intentions for 2009.

The Invitation

Are you willing to receive the gift of the question and use it to create a more fulfilled 2009?

If you are, transport yourself in your imagination to the end of the year 2009.

Imagine it is Dec 31, 2009, and I am visiting you.

The Questions

I ask you: Was the year 2009 a complete success?

If you answer "No," ask yourself the main reason 2009 was not a total success, and write it down in the space below.

(Of course, it's also possible that you might answer my question with a "Yes." Take a moment to write down the five experiences or accomplishments that made it a success.)

The main reason 2009 was not a total success is because I didn't _____________________________________________.

Now write down four other reasons.

2009 was not a complete success because I didn't __________________.
2009 was not a complete success because I didn't __________________.
2009 was not a complete success because I didn't __________________.
2009 was not a complete success because I didn't __________________.

Your Five Wishes

Now, turn those reasons into wishes.

For year 2009 to have been a total success, I wish I'd _______________________________________________.

And I wish I'd ____________________________________________.
I also wish I'd ___________________________________________.
And _____________________________________________.
And _____________________________________________.

Top Five Reasons for Success

Now ask yourself what five actions / attitudes lead to making this a successful year.

First and foremost, 2009 was a success because I _______________________________________________.

I also succeeded because I ___________________________________.
And because I ______________________________________________.
And because I ______________________________________________.
And because I ______________________________________________.

Affirmations: Your Path Forward

Now for the really good news: You don't have to wait until the end of the year 2009 to turn your wishes into reality!

Begin the process by writing your wishes as right-now, present-tense affirmations. Write your wishes like they are already achieved and you are enjoying the results.

I enjoy ________________________________________.
(Example: I am enjoying a loving, thriving and supportive relationship with everyone in my family.)

And ____________________________________________.
And ________________________________________________.
And __________________________________________________.
And ______________________________________________________.

Remember
Your wishes are living, breathing expressions that can be changed, revised and re-prioritized. Work with them, play with them, use them as navigational tools to guide your way, share them with your friends and family.

Above all, enjoy the process!

The Gift
I learnt "The Five Wishes" process from Gay Hendricks, its a book I recommend.

Dear Friends,
I have been teaching for several years now and many people have been suggesting that these teachings be shared with a larger audience through modern mediums like the internet, specially using sites like YouTube.
It didn't happen so far, yet this evening we had some guests over and the discussion turned to the power of our mind. I offered to show them how it is possible to lift a person with just one finger if we truly believe its possible.
Aneesh had a camera ready and recorded the whole scene. He then edited it in a short period of time...and lo and behold, we now have a video on YouTube!
Its not really a talk...its a practical demonstration of how it is possible to lift an 84kg man with just 1 finger. Its been recorded clearly enough that you can repeat the experiment yourself. I'm glad to share this with you. If you enjoy it please pass it on to your friends!

Dear Friends,

I have posted a short Daily Peace Meditation on YouTube...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIvMgbXooVg

Would you like to participate in an effort to raise the consciousness
of our planet?

We have heard the saying that "world peace begins with inner peace".
Would you like to apply this knowledge in your daily life, along with
thousands of others around the world?

There is now scientific evidence that supports the theory that the
square root of 1% of a population has an effect on the consciousness
of the whole. The square root of 1% of the population of the world is
8,000 people.

This is an invitation to consciously make yourself peaceful for 3 - 5
minutes everyday at 3:00 pm and/or 9:00 pm GMT. The intention is that
before April 6th 2009 (three months from today) a minimum of 8,000
people will be a part of the "Daily Peace Ripple" at exactly the same
time.

Please sign up ONLY if you really intend to participate, NOT just
because you like the idea. Take the pledge seriously and honestly try
to do it daily. It might also help to set an alarm in your watch or
phone that reminds you to be peaceful at these times.

How to participate? Simply reply to this message saying YES! and make
yourself peaceful daily at the suggested times!

If you are on Facebook please confirm your participation here:
http://snipurl.com/fbdailyripple
You will get updates and see all the others who are participating
(about 500 people have signed up in less than 24 hours)

How to be peaceful? You can use a gentle smile, silent prayer, breath
meditation, feelings of love and gratitude, the guided meditation I
have created, or any other process that works to calm and center
yourself.

Each of us is like a living cell of our living Mother Planet. As we
become peaceful, the world also becomes peaceful.

Love and peace,

Nithya Shanti

I was backpacking through Iran.

I had already been on the road for many months. Due to certain
circumstances I lost most of my money and clothing. While I was
waiting for my family to send me some more, I stayed in the cheapest
possible accomodation.

I woke up one morning and stepped outside. I was hungry and tired in
both body and spirit. My appearance was shabby: I was unshaven and my
clothes were rather dirty. As I was wandering through the street I
noticed a crisply dressed Iranian lady step out of a building. She
looked directly at me and stopped. She sized me up bottom to top. "You
there!" she said in a loud voice. "Come here." I barely understood
what she was saying but felt compelled to move towards her.

"Follow me!" she ordered and marched back into the building. I obeyed
as though in a trance. We climbed up several floors and arrived at her
apartment. She gave some loud instructions to her son.

He took me to the bathroom. I was given a towel and razor along with
hot water and fresh soap. I was in a daze. Not knowing the language I
just went along with this deam like experience and had a bath. I
emerged from the bath room to find a fresh shirt and trouser awaiting
me. I changed and came to the living room.

The lady had prepared a hot breakfast for me. "Eat!" she ordered in
that no-nonsense motherly way that never needs translation!

Once I had finished eating, she cleared the table and said something
that sounded like, "Now we can go!" I followed her down the stairs.
Back on the road she turned and left to work before I could even say
thank-you.

Here I was back on the street...refreshed, nourished in body and
spirit, and left with a heart so amazed and grateful.

Everytime I have thought of this incident over the last many years, my
heart immediately fills and overflows with profound gratitude for the
unknown lady who spontaneously helped a strange unshaven foriegner who
was wandering the streets.

What is even more remarkable is that I have such enourmous gratitude
to this lady for just one meal and one bath and one pair of clothes.
However, when I think of my parents, who have given me thousands of
meals, gifts, clothing, shelter, security, education and so much
more...there is no such deep gratitude...instead there are sometimes
only judgements and further expectations.

How strange this is!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This story was shared by one of my teachers, Ajahn Jayasaro (part of
the Western Forest Sangha) . I heard it many years ago and have shared
it here from memory.
Lets not blame our parents for our problems...they also had parents!
We can only begin to appreciate their trials when we ourselves become parents.
Let us instead love and appreciate our parents and loved ones today.
Tell them how much we love them in the same specifics and detail with
which we have sometimes disagreed with them.
The biggest regret when loved ones pass on are the words left unsaid
and the loving actions left undone. Let us begin to live in a way that
we can say goodbye with a regret free heart at any time. This is true
freedom.
Let there be love and gratitude in our hearts and homes.
Let it spill out into the streets of the world.
Eternal Peace
Nithya Shanti
Dear Friends,
I was very inspired when I read First Things First by Stephen Covey in college.
I used his recommended weekly planner with great results for a few years.
Then for various reasons I did not continue. I want to get back to this discipline.
So I have designed a weekly planner based on the teachings in that book.
Took me many hours to fine tune. Thought I'd share with all of you.
I am sure you will find it useful.
Peace,
Nithya
Here are some good strategies to cut back on the shouting and to add moments of laughing, singing...
1. At least once a day, make each child helpless with laughter.
2. Sing in the morning. It’s hard both to sing and to maintain a grouchy. This sets a happy tone for everyone.
3. Get enough sleep yourself. It’s so tempting to stay up late, to enjoy the peace and quiet. But morning comes fast!
4. Wake up before your kids. That means you can get yourself organized. It’s tough to wake up earlier, but it can make a huge difference in the quality of your mornings.
5. Step off the hedonic treadmill: People quickly adapt to new pleasures or luxuries, so it takes a new pleasure to give them a jolt of gratification. Cut back on treats and impulse buys for your kids. The ice-cream won’t be an exciting treat if it isn’t rare.
6. Most messages to kids are negative: “stop,” “don’t,” “no.” So try to cast your answers as “yes.” “Yes, we’ll go as soon as you’ve finished eating,” not “We’re not leaving until you’ve finished eating.” It’s not easy to remember to do this, but do try!
7. Look for little ways to celebrate. Holiday breakfasts can be a source of happiness. Think of ideas that are quick, fun, and everyone enjoys.
8. Repetition works. A friend told me he was yelling at his kids too much, so he distilled all rules of behavior into four key phrases: “keep your hands to yourself”; “answer the first time you’re asked”; “ask first”; and “stay with us” (his kids tended to bolt).
9. Say “no” only when it really matters. Wear a bright red shirt with bright orange shorts? Sure. Put water in the toy tea set? Okay. Sleep with your head at the foot of the bed? Fine. Samuel Johnson said, “All severity that does not tend to increase good, or prevent evil, is idle.”
10. When I find myself thinking, “Yippee, soon we won’t have to deal with a stroller,” I remind myself how fleeting this is. All too soon the age of Cheerios and the Tooth Fairy will be over. The days are long, but the years are short.
THE BRIDGING HEARTS GATHERING
9th May'09 with Nithya Shanti
All of us know that relationships can be the source of great joy and also great distress. The Bridging Hearts Gathering is an opportunity to learn, discuss and most importantly experience the essential love skills that bring hearts closer.
What brings hearts closer?
What takes hearts apart?
A sage asked his disciples...
'Why do people yell at each other when they are upset?'
The disciples thought for a while, and one said, 'We lose our calm and so we yell!'
'But explain to me, why do you yell when the other person is right next to you?' asked the sage. 'Isn't it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why do you yell at a person when you're angry?' The disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the sage.
Finally the sage explained...
'When two people are angry at each other, there is a distance which arises between their hearts.
To cover that distance they must yell, to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the louder they will have to yell to hear each other through that great distance.'
Then the sage asked...
'What happens when people are in love? They do not yell at each other but talk softly. Why? Their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small.
The sage continued...
'What happens when their love for the other grows even more? They do not speak, they only whisper. Their hearts come even closer with love. Finally they need not even whisper... they only look at each other and that's all. That is how close people are when they love each other. The heart is like one.'
Then the sage said,
'The lesson here is this...when you disagree do not let a distance come between your hearts. Relationships are far more important than specific outcomes. Do not say or do things that increase the distance between hearts, else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you may not find the path to return.'
Feedback from previous SMS Joyshops
It was the happiest day of my life. I am very happy and refreshed after the session. I found the teachings of Nithya very useful for solving problems and to live a happier life. It was the best session I had in my life. I now believe that energy does exist in our body and I could feel it. I will do the exercises everyday and if I score good marks in the exams it will be only because of the workshop. We should have these sessions 5 times a month. Now have I understood the true value of life.
Aditya, Class X
The session was a real 'awesome' experience. I came to know many ways to fight my problems. I can now overcome them with no difficulty. The knowledge I gained here was invaluable. Moreover, the session was fun too. Unlike other workshops, this one had a great impact on my life. These types of sessions can change the attitude of a person to such a great extent. I learned a lot from this session and hope I get a chance to experience this again.
Devendra, Class X
This was a really nice session. All my tensions and fears went off. The main thing that I liked from this workshop was the meditation. It helped me in every aspect of my life. This workshop totally changed my life. This was really the happiest day of my life. I hope we get one more day for this workshop to be continued.
It is a priviledge for me to be a catalyst for inner change and transformation in this world.
Someone said that there are four kinds of teachers...
the ordinary teacher tells (information)
the good teacher explains (knowledge)
the superior teacher demonstrates (application)
the great teacher inspires (transformation)
Certainly my effort has been to explain, demonstrate and inspire people to live more balanced, harmonious lives.
As I reflected on the above saying it occured to me that there are also four kinds of students
the ordinary student just hears (information)
the good student attempts to understand (knowledge)
the superior student implements the knowledge (application)
the great student becomes a source of inspiration him/herself (transformation)
In this light I'd like to share some heart warming and very intimate feedback from Dr Radha in Hyderabad.
She attended my sessions in Feb and May 2009. Despite overwhelming personal problems, her process of
blossoming can be a source of inspiration to us all. I feel blessed to have been a catalyst and support in her
voyage of awakening...
My Experience
This is all about my experiences-what I went through in February of this year (2009) . Something which stands out for me and changed me completely. It was like an experience never experienced before and which changed my whole life upside down-a complete life transforming experience.
The transformation took place after I came in contact with Nithya Shanti - the person with the ‘magic touch’. In a workshop which I attended, I had the good fortune of meeting Nithya, listening to his talks, attending his meditations, and sharing some of my personal problems with him and getting advice, help and healing from him.
What I went through in the next 5 days after the workshop ended was something beyond my imagination and wildest dreams. Physically I was down with fever, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps-which I could understand. But what was taking place inside me was something which went beyond my comprehension and understanding. It was as if an explosion had occurred within me and everything had just collapsed like a pack of cards. The layers and layers of resistance which I had so carefully built up within me all these years were struck down in just one instant. It was as if a dam had burst and the flood gates were opened. From morning till night I was thrown into fits of uncontrollable crying episodes, which went on non-stop. and which exhausted me thoroughly. It was something which was coming from deep inside me and took me completely by surprise. And I was a person who always uses to take pride in controlling my emotions and not letting myself go in front of anybody as I thought crying was a weakness! Though I was unable to identify the emotions I was going through, the tears just flowed continuously. It was complete agony for me, I didn’t know what was happening and it was very painful and scary. Through all this Nithya was a total support for me as he held my hand throughout and helped me to surrender and go through the process completely.
And when it was over, what a relief it was and what a fantastic change! I felt like a new person from inside out! I felt, fresh, full of life and completely different.
How life has changed for me after this experience:
Life is never the same again for me. It has taken a 360 degree turn. The whole experience has been very powerful for me, melting away all the gross within me and leaving in its wake a lot of love and joy. It was an experience which opened up my heart and vision. Lots of clarity, new balance and strength have emerged out of the chaos. I feel as if I have been completely reborn. Everything is the same in my life, nothing has really changed and yet, everything looks so different! I feel fresher, more full of life, more appreciative and more grateful than before. I am also laughing and smiling a lot more. I sense an undercurrent of love in everything. It is as if I have connected back to myself again. My heart is so full. I am full of gratitude to Existence itself and Nithya in particular for showing me such unconditional love and support.
Dr. Radha Vasudevan
I had a wonderful time and learned a lot of new things. I also experienced some things which I truly thought were impossible to do. My mind opened up to a lot of new aspects of life. The most amazing part of the session was a person being picked up by 4 people with one finger each. I thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and would be only too happy to attend more of these sessions.
Kinjalka M, Student, Pune
Programme rating: Excellent. I have learnt the process of getting what I want in life. You have explained the process wonderfully. Understood how the gratitude process changes the attitude of an individual. Once you feel thankful, you become positive and energized. Great presentation.
S. Balasubramanian, Senior Management, Sundaram Finance, Chennai
You conducted the program very beautifully, gave us nice learning and gave us to know how to live the life fullest. I have been very much enthusiastic and became positive thinker. Thank you for conducting these programs here!
Ankit Rathi, Pune
I had never attended such a beautiful seminar before. It was marvelous. I learned a lot of things by doing this seminar. The main thing I learned from this seminar is 'how to concentrate which was the major thing that lacked in my life.' I will make it sure that I get a chance to listen to you again. This seminar has a purpose of purifying people’s heart and mind.
Rushab Vora, Pune
A wonderful program unleashing the power of mind providing practical tools for lasting happiness in work and life. A perfect 10 marks with a billion thanks for the opportunity.
S. Venkateshan, Senior Management, Sundaram Finance, Chennai
I found it a completely different workshop. I had certainly expected it to be good, this was far beyond 'good'! This is all I want to say…And please don’t mind my handwriting!
Chetanya Kelkar, Student, Pune
Thank you very much for this excellent session. Even as I came to the office today, I was terribly depressed and did not realize what direction I was moving in. It seemed as if I was hemmed in on all sides without any hope of escape from this prison. Within a few minutes of meeting you I felt much better and after listening to your practicing all the relaxation techniques. I feel so liberated, so calm and I truly cannot recall even a single problem that used to torment me! All my work fears, nightmares have been laid to rest. Thank you for the good energy you generate and please continue the good work. I consider it a great personal good fortune to have met you. Gratefully yours,
Geeta Murlidar, Recruitment Professional, MAARS India, Bangalore
"You will reach a point where the heart tells itself what to do...Try to be mindful, and let things take their natural course. Then your mind will become still in any surroundings, like a clear forest pool. All kinds of wonderful, rare animals will come to drink at the pool, and you will clearly see the nature of all things, You will see many strange and wonderful things come and go, but you will be still."
