Apr 06, 2003 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- There is new hope
of controlling the disease, hepatitis C.
On 6 April 2003, details of new research were provided by Michael
Houghton, the US researcher who initially uncovered the hepatitis C
virus. Houghton is poised to give details of his research to a
conference in Sydney.
He noted that his medical team had developed a vaccine that is
effective against different strains of hepatitis C. He has gained
approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to begin trials of
the vaccine.
Houghton hopes that within seven years there will be drugs to cure
hepatitis C and a preventative vaccine. Hepatitis C is a key cause
of chronic liver disease in humans.
