if y'all don't have a history of shellfish or iodine allergies, you can take spirulina supplements, and nurse.  that'll boost your iron, and the bioavailable iron in your milk.  plus, if she'll eat green foods, you can open a spirulina capsule, and sprinkle it in those.  it's a fast, easy natural way to boost iron.  my last pg, my levels were down to a 7, and a month of spirulina brought them up to a 12.

Caroline had her 12 month check up today and they said her iron was low.  It was 10.3 and the average is 12.  Anyone had any experince with this?  I'm stunned because she eats so well- lots of fruits and veggies and whole grains and pastas.  We do some meat and fish but not alot. I've always been more on the vegetarian side.  She still nurses during the day and through the night.  We don't do dairy much, some cheese. She was sick last week with a high fever for a couple of days.  Can an illness cause a drop in iron level? Doc said we would do a recheck at her 15month.  Should I be worried? Or what should I change?

having a recent illness does make a difference.

things you can do to increase iron absorption are feeing vitamin c righ foods (citrus, strawberries are 2 examples) in conjunction with iron-rich foods. if she will eat liver, that is a great one- especially if cooked in a cast-iron skillet. somehow some of the ron actually transfers to the food, though i'm still unclear as to how.

also, one more thing- blackstrap molasses (an old lll friend taught me that one ;) ) is a good source of iron.

Hi ladies! I have 2 breastpumps (electric, Evenflo) that I don't need
anymore. I'm trying to give them away on Freecycle, but no one has
asked for them yet. I thought I would check here. They are totally
free. I would like the same person to take both of them. They only
have one pump each so you have to have them both to pump both sides at
the same time. They were cheap, but worked well. I hope someone can
use them. I live in downtown Bluffton and we'll be around all
weekend. I didn't know if LLL collects these for women in need, but if
so let me know and I'll drop them off at Mandy's house.
Thanks, Katie

left the sign in sheet at Mel's house.
We had great discussion about starting foods, weight gain in babies,
how to have mommy daddy time too, and How to become a Leader.
I knwo some of you were not able to make it to the meeting, so ask
anything here to the group. It is so important to have a support
system and I want you all to have that in this group.
We should start planning our next meetings. First Satueday in June is
the 7th. We need a place to meet this month.
As soon as we have the details down we can get the word out about the
meeting and hopefully reach more moms needing support.
So get me your emails and I will send along the the leader application
packet so you can print it out and sign it. If you are new to the
group introduce your self and let us support you any way we cam and I
look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. If you need to

We are planning on our first in a while meeting in Beaufort at
Melanie's House. I will get the firm details ASAP. This meeting will
be a breastfeeding cafe so to speak. Open conversation and a meet and
greet sort of thing. After the first hour I will be discussion and
answering questions on becoming a leader. Many of you have expressed
a desire to help change the breastfeeding atmosphere in Beaufort
County. This is a great way to impact the community with the help of
the most powerful Breastfeeding Organization in the World. Our group
as it stands reaches a very small amount of moms due to the fact that
we only have one leader (me). The process is not a hard one and you
learn so much. You time as a leader can be applied towards becoming
an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant or IBCLC.
Also there are a few group jobs that need a volunteer, Library
attendant: keeps track of the library books and makes calls if one
goes missing too long. Treasurer to keep track of dues and spending.
Greeter: makes sure each person is welcomed to the meeting and signs
in and knows about the library and hand outs. None of these Jobs are
hard and they really help to grow a group. We have been having one
mom at meetings and sometimes none at all so it would be great if we
can build our group to realy help the mothers of our communities.
Also Melanie has had the great idea to have a cool nursing area for
moms and babies and toddlers at the water festival. These types of
things are very successful in other areas so I would love to figure
out how to do that as a group.
SO, let's hear from you if you are interested in the May meeting in
Beaufort and any of the other things.
Peace to you all

Me too! I'd love to go to a meeting, and to become a member, etc. If
the meetings in Bluffton were in the late afternoon or evening, I'd
probably have gone to one by now. :)

I'm so excited! I had my baby in January, and had fully intended to go
to a meeting while I was pregnant, but never got around to it. Then, by
the time I had the baby, there weren't meetings in Beaufort anymore. :(

Can't wait for more details. :)

I would love to be apart of a Beaufort meeting!  I have been wanting to go but being stuck on the Air Station with my hubby having the car makes things difficult.  I would also like to try and become an active member/participant in LLL.  I can't wait for all the details.

Also there are a few group jobs that need a volunteer, Library
attendant: keeps track of the library books and makes calls if on e
goes missing too long.

Von,
I know that there are a few working moms in the group. Hopefully they will post with their experiences. I have a lot of information an links for you too. You are doing such a good job. Working and pumping is situation that needs getting used to and having unsuportive people around you makes it even tougher. Just remember that You are the decision maker and they don't have a say in what happens in you and your son's life. You are doing the best thing for him. Think of all the immunities he will have to fight colds and things in the child care setting. And what a great way for you two to stay connected.
I will post some links and info in just a little bit. Keep up the good work!
Mandy
