Disclaimer:

We are "the lissencephaly loop". The "loop" is not part of
the US national support group "The Lissencephaly Network". We are a group of parents who have experienced Lissencephaly. We are not doctors, any info obtained here should be used only after conferring with your childs doctor.

We also have a Facebook Lissencephaly Loop. This group is private, so to subscribe please first fill out the form located at http://corleen.org/facebook/ and then visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/lissencephaly/ to join the group.

Lissencephaly is a group of disorders related with
abnormal neuronal migration during the gestational
period. Lissencephaly comes from the Greek "lissos"
(smooth) and "enkephale"(in the head) and means smooth
brain.

It includes several different conditions such as
Miller-Dieker Syndrome (MDS), Isolated Lissencephaly
Sequence (ILS), Lissencephaly with Cerebellar Hypoplasia (LCH), Walker-Warburg Syndrome (WWS) ,
Fukuyama Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (FCMD),
Muscle-Eye-Brain disease(MEB) , Microlissencephaly (MLIS), Subcortical Band Heterotopia (SBH) X-Linked Lissencephaly with Ambigious Genitalia (XLAG), Microcephaly with Simplified Gyral patterns (MSG) and Polymicrogyria (PMG).

Almost all of these conditons are due to genetic abnormalities, however, the chromosomes and genes involved differ depending on the detail of the clinical observations.

Getting a definitive diagnosis can be difficult - many of the genes are still unknown, so genetic tests may be inconclusive.

The loop was established as a place to share medical information and emotional support. We are parents and relatives of children with lissencephaly, not medical professionals. If you have a child or a relative diagnosed with lissencephaly and are looking for information and support, please feel free to join this community.
