Hi,

My name's Maria, I'm 22, and have recently had an operation to close
the fistula in the roof of my mouth (was born with unilateral - that
means one side yeah?? - cleft lip and palate). I've only had about 5
surgeries and my last one before this was when I was about 10 I
think - this one was my choice.

The reason I went for this surgery is because the hole in the roof
of my mouth was pretty big and I had to wear a plate otherwise my
speech was dreadful (well, people said they couldn't tell but I
could), so I decided to have the hole fixed up. I saw Mr Goodacre at
the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, before this all my sugery was
done at Queen Mary's, Roehampton, but that was a long time ago.

Anyway, the reason I'm on here is because I've been searching and
searching but I can't find anyone else that's had the cleft palate
repaired at this late stage. Being an 80's child, obviously things
have changed and they used to fix the palate at a very young age,
but just then. Once I'd had my orthodontics the hole had been
stretched open somewhat. I think these days they bone graft further
back or something.

The surgery was not incredibly successful (grrrrr wish I'd never
bothered) and the palate is currently in the process of collapsing
again, but hopefully there will at least be some improvement from
before. I would love to talk to anyone who has had a similat
problem, or from anyone younger who would like to talk to someone
who's already been through the worst!

I live in Portsmouth, UK at the moment, but will be moving to
California in a month's time to get married to my fiance :).

Sorry for the obscenly long message!!

Maria x

Harriet,

I had surgery on my nose the same time as jaw surgery last year. I will be
having more surgery on my nose in a few months.

If you want more surgery on your nose then go for it!

Hi Harriet,

I had my nose fixed in 2001 when I was 13. I had it done because I was being
bullied, and my nose did look a little better, but unfortunately the
bullying didn't stop. I saw a psychologist though, and she helped me to find
ways to
stop the bullies affecting me.

My nose is still squashed, and it doesn't look 'normal', but then I guess it
never will.

If you want your nose done, go for it!

Emma

CLAPA Summer camp 2006

Tuesday 29 August - Friday 1 September

The Ranch Outdoor Discovery Centre

Bryn-y-Moel, Llanbedr, Gwynedd LL45 2HU

Who is it for?

Children and teenagers between the ages of 9 and 15 born with cleft lip
and/or palate.

Where is it?

The Ranch is a residential centre overlooking Cardigan Bay in North
Wales, just three miles south of Harlech. The centre is in 11 acres of
grounds, and within a 10-minute drive of extensive beaches. The Ranch
runs a range of activities including archery, orienteering, night walk,
games sessions and circus skills.

What's it all about?

This 4-day camp will enable up to 25 children of different ages to spend
time in a comfortable and safe environment, to get to know each other
and to concentrate on having some serious FUN!

The exact details of the overall theme of the camp has yet to be
finalized, but it is likely to involve music and circus skills (in
addition to the other activities on offer) with a performance on the
last day to which parents and other family members will be invited.

Who will be there?

Apart from the young people attending the camp, there will be:

*         CLAPA staff

* Adult volunteers from a variety of backgrounds, some of whom
will have a personal relationship with cleft lip and/or palate.

There will be plenty of adults there to ensure that the children are
well looked after.

How much will it cost?

This year we are giving families the option of choosing how much to
contribute towards the costs of the camp by ticking the relevant box on
the application form. The amount that anyone chooses to contribute will
not affect their application in any way.

As well as children wanting to attend the camp, we also need volunteers
to help run it. Please do get in touch with Ruth Buchanan
(ruth.buchanan@...) if you are interested in helping out at this
year's camp. It's a combination of hard work and great fun!

Please note that volunteers will be arriving on site Monday 28 August

The closing date for applications is Friday 16 June

For further information and application packs please contact:

Oh God, you just reminded me! I was jumping up and down on my bed at the age
of about 4 in a ballerina costume, singing: "I'm a little aeroplane, flap
your wings, flappy flappy flappy!" and I yelled "Sing it, Daddy!" and he said
"Maybe later, love." then the camera juddered a bit because I'd kicked him! I
kicked my poor old dad because he wouldn't sing a stupid song! You can tell
he's a devoted dad though, because then he starts singing it!
On the same bit, I'm reading a Thomas the Tank Engine book, and I totally
made up the words! I was going on about Thomas breaking his leg (a train with
legs???) and having to have an operation in the hospital - very sweet, but
completely and utterly embarrassing!

yea i know what you mean, although with me i always think they're
staring at my nose. i have been thinking about getting it done, but
i dunno if it would really help, as then id still have the scar.
although only 1 of my mates has ever asked about it and thats just
cos they're curious. i have had little kids say stuff but its just
funny some time, the best one i got was "were you hit in the face
with a frying pan?" that one made me laugh out loud.
Anybody got any stories about having the lip/nose done?

Hi everyone,

It's been very quiet round here recently, hasn't it?

I'm home alone until Thursday, but it's OK because I have my car - I was
home alone last year before I passed my test and it was hell! I had to get the
7.30am bus to college, but now I'm pretty much self-sufficient. My parents gave
me £100 for food and stuff (they went away last Sunday) so I've been
stocking up on food they don't like me having, such as doughnuts and Golden
Grahams!

I dug out a really funny video earlier, with footage of my mum changing my
nappy at the age of 4 months, and then my brother dived onto the bed next to me
and practically suffocated me by giving me a huuuuuuuuuuge kiss! He was only
3 and had the blondest, curliest hair ever! Then there was footage of me in
my buggy eating grapes. I'd nearly finished the grapes when I went cross-eyed
and bright red - then I let out a sigh. I'd pooed my nappy on film! If my
dad ever shows it to prospective husbands, I'm gonna kill him!!
