Tasha,
I was at 282 pounds. I had the lap-band procedure and it was the best thing I ever did. I have lost a total of 90 Lbs and am still loosing. I had the surgery back on Sep 8, 2006. It is a slow process but it works. It is actually better to loose your weight slow because it gives your skin time to "snap" back. Since your 21, you probably will not have a problem.
When I was thinking about having the surgery, by whole family was against it. But know they have seen the proven results and have eaten their words. If you are looking for a good surgeon, Dr. Marsden is the best.
I do have some advice.. It is a life changing event. It will change the way you eat forever. You also have to keep in mind that you still have to watch what you eat. It is possible to gain weight with the lap-band.
Foods like ice cream and chocholate can still go down through the band without a problem. The thing to remember is to stick with protein. This will fill you up and you will be more sucessful in your weight loss.
The surgery itself is pretty simple. The recovery time is very quick. I had my surgery on a Friday and was back to work the next Wed. I hardly had any pain.
Anyway, good luck to you and I hope you get the surgery.

im 21 and i have been overwieght all my life. because of my weight (im
just under 300lbs, 293lbs bmi is 50) i have pcos and other health
issues. with the pcos, my ovaries stoped working, all of my life i
wanted children and now with my ovaries not working that dream of mine
has been crushed. so i have been looking into lapband to help me lose
the weight and help my chances of having children someday. i have tried
many diets and none worked for me. i even walked 2 miles every other
day, and that didnt even work. my doc just told me not to long ago that
because of my ovaries not working and that stuff building up in the
uterus, that can cause cancer. yikes right...so im on hormones to make
me have a period, but they dont help my ovaries at all. i would like to
hear from people who have had lapband and it worked or not worked from
them. i want to hear what others have gone through. i even want to hear
from other people who are looking into in just like i am. my doc told
me that if this is the way i want to go, they will refer me to a
specialist. my mom told me go for it, if i can afford it. my dad said
to get a second opinion and that he would have to look into it. all of
my friends tell me not to do it. so now im doing my homework and trieng
to decide if this is the way i want to go.
