i totally severed my acl when i slipped while shoveling my driveway
on feb. 22 of this year. i have a complete or high grade tear
according to the mri. os said he was not going to do surgery as i am
old (50! not quite old!) but i imagine he means that i'm not
athletic. i have had no pain at all, prob because it is a total tear
but i do have instability. i was going to physical therapy twice a
week but now i go once a week as i do all the exercises daily at
home. there is only one machine they have there that i do not have
at home. i wear a brace all damned day for the most part but i
really don't think it does anything but remind me to be careful. i
also walk (albeit slowly) on the treadmill daily to get proper
heel/toe and increase my stride. while i know i've come along way in
2 months, how long does this improvement for normalcy take? i cannot
walk downstairs, can't walk down my driveway as it it kinda steep.
walk slowly upstairs but certainly not with any kind of grace. would
appreciate any imput
thanks

I felt a pop, had immediate swelling, etc. Same as you, I was able
to go about my normal daily routine without much pain and without my
knee even slipping. I could run a little, and ride the bike. During
surgery, they found my ACL to be 90% torn - so you can definitely
have a torn ACL and not experience a lot of pain beforehand. My
doctor recommended riding the stationary bike and doing lots of leg
muscle exercises (leg press, hamstring machine, etc.) to prepare for
the surgery.

was scheduled asap. As far as I know, your surgery is less painful,
with a faster recovery than mine is. If you went to Yahoo videos
and typed in Knee surgery, you will see testimonials, and videos of
the surgery, ewwwwwwwww. That site has been helpful for me .....
take it slow!
