Before surgery advise, Depending on the severity of
your injury do what ever you have in the past. Calf
raises, leg extensions, Stationary bike. Anything to
contract the muscles around your knee.
After surgery I was told to ice for 20 minutes every
couple of hours. I iced for a min. of 1 hour depending
on how long it took to melt the ice pack. I ran with 2
tensor brand Cloth ice packs so that I could place
them directly onto my knee. I spaced out using the
packs by 2 hours before putting on the next on.
Primarily because they needed 2 hours to refreeze. I
can tell you, That this amount of icing reduced my
swelling very quickly and took the edge off from the
surface pain. My surgeon does not believe in to many
pain killers, but Percoset works well in the first
couple weeks. I Had internal stitching and taped on
the outside of the knee, which did not allow me to do
much more than ice until the incision was healed
enough for me to bend. I had a 10 degree bend when I
started physio and I was just measured yesterday at a
99 degree bend and I'm at a 4 degree on the
straightening of my leg. Once I get to 138 degrees
I'll have full range again. So once you do get
finished don't push yourself and stretch that knee
joint only as far as you can and as often as you can.
