hey everyone ACL injuries suck and I know it all too well! TRY BEING ON CRUTCHES AND HAVING YOUR CAR STOLEN ! ON A SECOND FLOOR ON CRUTCHES!

But hey life goes on.  I had a screw in my shin bone because they could not achor the acl in the right! IT stinks!

Check up went great!!  She seemed really surprised at the muscle tone and strength in my quads!  Went to the gym just after my appt...lol.

Let's see, I had surgery on a Thursday, stayed overnight in the hosp, and had to get my knee to a 90 degree angle before they'd release me.  They showed me the excercises I was to do at home, and I did them Friday afternoon/night at home, and over the weekend.  My first formal PT appt was first thing Monday morning!

I'm sure the PT varies from place to place(had a friend who had surgery about 2 weeks before I did, in a civilian hospital, and he wasn't even sent home wearing a knee brace and don't know about his PT routine).  But provided your PT routine is similar to mine, I see no reason why you couldn't do it on your own.

Ice was my friend!!!  LOL  I lovedddddd the ice!!  I normally did it about 3-4 times a day, for a half hour or more I think.  And one of those was always after my formal PT session; they iced me there for about 10 minutes the first few times, but I told them I had 4 bags of ice at home and would do it as soon as I got home.

I unfortunately have an unusually high tolerance for pain meds:(  Drug during labor didn't work, I've felt teeth being pulled, stitches being done, had a lump removed that I felt the scraping inside, etc.  So I wasn't too surprised when the meds they gave me didn't do much for me.

Anything else I can answer, glad to help...hope you're feeling better every day!

Moose,

Thanks for the reply and congrats on your progress. Hope your check
up goes well!  Could I bug you for a couple of follow - ups

1.  How many days after surgery did your initial PT start?
2.  As long as I have access to a gym when I travel (with a
stationary bike) I should be able to replicate the supervised PT
session?  What do you think??
3. Lastly, if you remember back to being 1 week out from surgery,
what was your icing regimen?  How long, often, etc.....Before or
after PT, both...

About the pain meds, I've always had a rough time with it.  Same
thing happened to me 4 years ago with right shoulder surgery.  It's a
shame, because I really wish I could enjoy narcotics more than I do :-
)

Thanks Moose.  I appreciate your info and feedback.

It sounds to me like your recovery is fairly normal so far. It isn't uncommon to be woozy from pain meds for a few days. That would be better than being in...
