Hi Everyone. I hope that everybody had a good Memorial day weekend.
The weather here in New England was good--still kind of chill at
night though. I would also like to welcome the new members to this
group.....we've gotten 2 this weekend alone!! You can always come
here for information, direction or if you just need to share
something. I had a conversation tonight with a man about epilepsy.
He councels a young boy who has it and he was asking me about
medications. We talked about meds and I thought it would be
important to bring up other things in this talk also--I told this man
that it is probably a much harder thing to deal with BECAUSE of
people's reactions to the disorder--it was for me anyway! He walked
away from me shaking his head. He did not belive that statement in
the slightest. I hope that man let's that 17 year old boy know that
there are others out there who know EXACTLY what he is going
through---he is not alone by a long shot! Makes me think of lots
actually! What makes a person a professional? Is it a masters
degree? Is it straight "A"s through 12 years of school? Is it all
kinds of merits, awards and diploma's hanging on an office
wall?........NO--it is not all of these things that makes a person a
professional. It is having the expieriance. It is feeling the pain
and growing from it. It is realizing just how far you really have
come in spite of it all and you made it because of--COURAGE. Going
to school everyday, or being taught at home and not quitting--
COURAGE. Getting on that school bus knowing you could have a
seizure--COURAGE. Asing for help because you feel a seizure coming
on or because you are depressed--COURAGE. These are all things that
20 YEARS of school will not teach a person--it's not in ANY manual or
textbook. I have learned so many wonderful things about myself
because I have had the expieriance of epilepsy--things I would have
NEVER had learned without it---EVER! My absoulute HERO --a woman who
was beautiful & gracious--was given to me because of my epilepsy. I
would have NEVER had her in my life if I did not have seizures. I
wouldn't have met her ---EVER. Sooooo-I really hope that councelor
tells that 17 year old boy that he is not alone--and points him down
the right road. Or even better--if he takes his hand and walks it
with him...................Christine Ford
