Greetings fellow Keto Parents
I am the mother of 2 gorgeous little girls, one of whom has recently started on
the ketogenic diet. I come to you by way of fabulous ToyNera - she & I were
inmates of Sydney Children's Hospital together this time last year.
My Miss Molly, now 21 months old, sustained a severe traumatic brain injury over
a year ago and since then has been on the anti-epileptic roundabout. Finally
the Neurologist admitted that the drugs were getting us nowhere and suggested
that we try her on the keto diet.
It is fairly early days, but so far the diet seems to be having a positive
effect on her seizures, which is very encouraging. Main issues for us with the
diet are not so much the food, but the fluids. Prior to starting the diet Molly
was progressing very slowly with oral drinking and was really only managing
thickened fruit juice well.
So we have had to fast-track her taking thin fluids (i.e. water) with mixed
success, and are keeping her hydrated with diet jelly (yuck!). Her bowels are
proving to be another big issue (previously well managed just with prune & pear
daily) - very painful & distressing constipation. Also, I am not to thrilled
about feeding my under-2 year old artificial sweeteners and colourings on a
daily basis...
Any suggestions you may have for these issues would be greatly welcomed. I look
forward to learning much from you all!
Thanks in advance, Susan
