Dear Rose:
I am a Christian with a six year old son, who has been on the ketogenic diet
since 5/24/06 and has been seizure free since 6-02-06. Prior to the diet and
being on 4 antiseizure medications at the same time, he was having a seizure
every 4 to 15 minutes. We have been truly blessed with this diet. He is now
developing like a normal six year old.
It is very important for the diet to work to get the ketones up to the large
amount on the keto stix. I love goat milk, but for 30.5 grams of goats milk
there is 1.36 carbs, 1.26 grams fat and 1.09 grams protein. 29.8 grams of Heavy
whipping cream has .83 grams carbs, 11.03 grams of fat and 0.61 grams of
protein.
It is very important to burn fat as energy, instead of protein or carbs. The
breakdown of the fat is what causes the release of ketones and it is believed
that ketones are what stop the seizures. If there isn't enough fat, then the
body will burn carbs and protein (including the child's muscles) for energy.
Is it possible to to get goat milk cream? I know goat milk is naturally
homogenized and therefore the cream dosn't easily seperate.
When my son first started the diet he was 4 years old and started at a 4 to 1
ratio. He could have 3.18 grams of carbs per meal so we were very, very careful
not to exceed that amount. If you want to double check your nutrition counts
you can go to the USDA site and look them up (that is where I got the figures
for the goats milk and cream. http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/
My son still has his mic-key (we had to put one in him because he was having
so many seizures, he was not able to swallow his seizure medication).
The mic-key (or tube directly into his stomach) has been a real blessing for
us. He is able to eat real food, but all of the yucky stuff (olive oil, fats,
meds etc) are put through the tube so he doesn't have to try to swallow them.
I know there are many non religous folk out there, but I have believed since
learning about the diet that this was God's answer to our nightmare. I believe
from the begining that it would work for my son, and had many people praying for
him. I will certainly keep you and your little one in my prayers. Please
continue to be an advocate for your child and never stop asking questions or
demanding what you know to be in Eric's best interest.
Try to switch to goat milk cream, and see if his ketones improve.

Hi all,
I am Rose, mother to 13mth old Eric who just started KD at
Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital last week.
Eric is tube fed since he stopped interecting with the world due to
severe seizure onset at 4/5mths old. His MRI showed a brain
malformation known as Polymicrogyria but his Neuro feels that it is
the abnormal brain activity/seizures which are stopping him from
developing. We are so curious to see if normalising his EEG (which
is apparently really bad even when his seizures are reduced)will
help him to develop although we are aware he may have some problems
which the malformation will cause.
We spent 5 days in RCH where his blood ketones were about .05 - 2.4
but now at home he has neg ketones in Urine.
I will speak to dietician tommorrow ,his ratio of 3:1 which she
worked out for us in his food which is a combination of Goats milk
(on our insistence), calogen and polyjoule.
These seizures are robbing Eric of a chance and so please join me in
praying or for non religious (sending good vibes) to my boy.
