Re: [Keto Kids] ketogenic diet

Ann,
We had to take Tucker to the neurologist because we had lots of questions
and he was refusing to eat anything. He would cry with the meals and ended up
aspirating and had to be in the hospital for aspiration pneumonia. Anyway, the
neuro told us that the decreased appetite could be because of the zonegran, so
we are weaning him off of it for the past 3 weeks! The seizures are a little
worse some days, but I have read so many people say that the seizures get worse
until they are weaned off and the meds are out of their system. I haven't
called the neuro about this because I am afraid he will want to up the meds and
I want to give the diet time to work. Am I wrong? Since we have started the
wean Tucker is holding his head up so much better and the OT even said he
thought that he might be trying to start to crawl soon!!!!! THanks so much for
any advice from anyone. I am open to any suggestions. Tucker is also on
Depakote and after reading so much I am wondering if we
shouldn't be weaning off that instead! Thanks, Dawn

Hi Dawn,
We started weaning my daughter off her meds about 2 months after she started
the diet. We went very slowly and all this was done per her neurologists
order. Needless to say, she remained seizure free and was off all meds in under
a
year. She is still seizure free and on is currently on a strict Atkins diet.
So far so good. We tried to wean her off the diet in March of 2004 but she
had seizures again. Our neuro asked if we wanted to put her back on the diet
or try meds again. It was a no brainer and she went back on the diet. Talk
to nero and ask him/her why the hesitation on weaning the drugs even if the
weaning is done slowly. Hope it goes well and keep me posted.
