More and more people see Rope Skipping.

Today I was pointed to an article in the right column of a Dutch Newssite http://www.NU.nl

http://www.nu.nl/news.jsp?n=419712&c=10

Springen!

As you can see it is Dutch! The translation says:

Jumping!

A man from India broke the speedrecord RopeSkipping. De 43-year old Ranjit Pal jumped in 15 seconds 136 times. Pal hopes that he will be added in the Guiness Book of Records. “I have practised more now, ik kan now make 150 to 160 times in 15 seconds,” Pal sais. The man started only 2 years ago with Rope Skipping.

July 25, 2004, I was at the World Championships Rope Skipping in  Tallebudgera (Brisbane, Australia).

I was there as a Board-member and responsible for the computer- / competitionprogramme for FISAC-IRSF, the International Rope Skipping Federation (http://www.IRSF.org).

I was also there as a delegation-representative for The Netherlands. Because Martin Loenen participated in the WC-Masters (= individual.

That Sunday Martin became third in the Men’s division in the event ’30 seconds Speed’. In this event for every step made, the rope needs to make one complete rotation. His score was: 425 points. The score is composed of: [Number of steps with the right foot] x 5, which is 164 steps in 30 seconds.

That Sunday the World Record was broken. Alexandra Toth from Hungary scored 470 points, which are 188 steps in 30 seconds.

Because I’m one of the first to introduce Rope Skipping as as Sport as we know it in India, I contacted Jim Roy immediately. He is one of the Bord-members of the RSFI (= Rope Skipping Federation of India). He also doesn’t know anything about this person or achievement. But he also says that India is a very BIG country….

I also received the following links:

http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1126821.html

and

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2004/20041004/cth1.htm#10

I do kno wthat in the Guiness Book of records the following records are added / entered:

“10 sec: 128 Albert Rayner (Great Britain) 19 Nov 1982 in Birmingham.

1 minute: 425 Robert Commers (USA) 23 Feb 1990 in Jamestown (USA)”

And logically Pal should be in the book, because there is not yet mentioned the 15 seconds. As an achievement per second however the score of Pal is not interesting: Albert Rayner: 12.8 per second. Pal: 9.067 per second……..

So one conclusion could be: The man from India is an absolute worldtalent and should participate as soon as possible at the next WC.

Another conclusion could be: The man from India (as also Rayner and Commers) use another technique then the ‘one step per rotation’.

A third possible conclusion could be: The man from India didn’t jump 136 times in 30 seconds.

I hope that someone can tell / show me more about this remarkable achievement. Because until I’ve met the man OR see the video of his skipping I will make follow the third conclusion.

With skipping regards,
